approach

Many of our tutors have also been chiefexaminers so they know exactly what will berequired from their students.

The small to medium class sizes and intensive tuition meanthat all students can benefit from personal attention.

Where additional tuition is necessary, it is available on aone-to-one basis. This is one of many benefits provided bythe college.

We use exam-based teaching methods. Students receiveregular topic specific examination practice in addition tositting mock exams in December and April. By testingstudents regularly on their previous work, we not onlyensure their full understanding of their subjects but buildtheir confidence for the final exams.

We place great emphasis on the successful timemanagement of our courses; allowing mocks to beundertaken at the end of the course before examinations.

A highly organised teaching programme, underpinned byregular written homework and timed tests, should lead to asuccessful outcome, given 100% commitment, attendanceand punctuality on the part of the student.

We ensure study techniques are fully integrated into allteaching and these include: study skills, revision, testing, note taking, critical thinking, speed reading, memory skillsand time management.

A-level OverviewOne of the great advantages of the Britisheducational system is that it provides studentswith the opportunity to specialise in thesubjects of their choice at AS and A Level.

UK universities recognise that A levels provide the depth ofstudy required for UK degree courses. In many othercountries, students have to go through a prolonged generaleducation, and can only specialise when they go touniversity. A Levels enable students to experience theintellectual challenge and stimulation of studying subjects inmuch greater depth before they go to university. The A Levelsystem works best when students have a wide range ofsubjects to choose from. Too many schools and colleges stillrequire students to choose from columns of subjects to suitthe timetable's requirements rather than the student'sinterests. At Cardiff Sixth Form College there is an interestingselection of subjects which can be taken in any combinationand tailored to fit the student’s individual needs.

What Will I Study? The AS course combines the best of the ‘traditional’ Physicstopics (mechanics, materials, current, electricity and radiation)with the most modern of ideas involving quantum and particlephysics. The A2 course allows for some students choice, whilstat the same time including the essential and fundamentaltopics of fields, nuclear physics and kinetic theory.

What Next? The full Advanced Level in Physics provides the basis forstudents who wish to proceed to higher education to studyphysics, engineering, material sciences, geophysics, medicine, veterinary sciences and other scientific careers.

A famous quote by the late professor Richard Feynman ofCaltech ‘If you are a physicist you can be everything.’ Quitesimply Physics is regarded very highly as a qualification byemployers and higher education. It does not restrictstudents’ progression in any career as it enhances theirqualification profile.

Psychology AS & A2Examination Board – AQA

What Will I Study?Psychology is a stimulating and challenging subject. A simpledefinition is that it is the study of behaviour. Psychologistshowever, do not just measure and observe behaviour; theytry to understand why people behave certain ways. In orderto achieve this understanding it is necessary to considerinternal processes and motives.

There are various branches of Psychology and during thecourse you will study key pieces of research and topics froma range of these areas (e.g. individual differences, developmental psychology). You will also look at one area ofapplied Psychology where the practical implications of thesubject are studied (e.g. health psychology).

What Next?Psychology is useful for a range of university courses andcareers including: clinical psychologist, educationalpsychologist, forensic psychologist, lecturer, healthpsychologist and occupational psychologist.

Comments: Something else which is really uniqueto the college is the Goodwill Ambassador Programmeto Malaysia, where we had the fantastic experience ofseeing live births, caesarean sections, and even post-mortems. These are things you don’t get to see untilfourth year medical school, so to be able to turn up toan interview and say you’ve seen this is somethingreally unique, and puts you into a very good positionfor getting into medical school.

Comments:With a ‘work hard, play hard’ ethos, CSFChas helped me to develop both academically and socially, whether it is by participation in the annual Cultural Eventor through my involvement in Debate and Badmintonclubs. I believe my time here at CSFC has been an incredibleexperience, and it is both an honour and a pleasure to beable to study at such a respectable institution. Thesecherished moments are experiences which will stay withme long after I have left CSFC, my second home.

Comments: Having attended both a state school and CSFC thedifferences between them is very clear. At the college Ihave been academically stretched which has helpedme in my studies. The teaching style is excellent as itallows for topics to be covered in a lot of depth andbreadth. The college has also some fantasticopportunities outside the classroom, with links to theGoodwill Ambassador Programme and NASA. Inaddition, there is a fantastic social side to the college. My advice to students – take every opportunity thatis given to you, dive in with both feet and you willhave a fantastic time, and with a little hard work youcan end up at your first choice of university!

These sections are:

• Volunteering – helping someone, your community orthe environment.

• Physical – becoming fitter through sport, dance orfitness activities.

• Skills – developing existing talents or tryingsomething new.

• Expedition – planning, training for and completing anadventurous journey through places such as BlackMountains, Wales.

10 of us from cardiff sixth Form collegeput ourselves in the shoes of experts at nAsAas we travelled to houston to compete in theinternational space settlement designcompetition. We were put in a company consisting ofmore than 40 people from Australia, romania and America and together we weretasked with building a settlement floating inthe clouds above venus. We were competingagainst three other companies also consistingof members from all the corners of the worldas we began this two day task. e team wassplit into five different departments:structure, automations, operations, humanfactors and business development andfinance. each department had its own roleand tasks that it had to complete. Finally,

after almost 44 hours of non-stop work, withonly a few winks of sleep in between, we hadto submit a 50 slide presentation of acomprehensive design for this settlement.Following that came the presentations andthe judges left to deliberate, during whichtime we visited the Johnson space centre, the home of the infamous mission control aswell as multiple space shuttles. it was thenfinally time for the results. After muchnervous waiting, it was finally announcedthat our team had won. it was a moment ofpure elation! All that work had finally paidoff and we had beaten people from all overthe world!it was an unbelievably proud moment for allof us to win such a prestigious internationalcompetition. looking back at thecompetition i can confidently say it was oneof the best weeks of my life and the memoriesand experiences i took from it will be utilizedand cherished for a long time to come.
