CSD Mission StatementCSD Mission Statement

• The fundamental role of WCU is to develop a community of scholarship in which students, faculty members, administrators, and staff members learn and apply the products of learning. The mission of the faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is to engage jointly in the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and dispositions to address communication and its disorders, exercise informed judgments, and accept challenges calling for innovative clinical responses. In the execution of this mission, we are committed to honoring the individual differences and needs of culturally and linguistically diverse populations and growing in awareness, knowledge, and experience to meet the challenges provided by ethical practices, changing populations, and scope of practice demands.

Observation Hours• Prior to graduating it is recommended you get a minimum of

25 clinic observation hours• These can be obtained anywhere (The Clinical Process will give

some guided observation hours) and can be counted for ASHA as long as there is an ASHA certified SLP/A

Information You Need• Clinic placements will be given out by late-April for

summer – fall will be given out by the end of summer session• Most everyone will have a school placement in the fall to

coincide with the school age language class• You need to focus on getting clinic hours this summer

(adult hours for most) – make sure that you are available to the site• Continue to check your catamount email throughout the

summer in case we need to get in touch with you (class time change or room assignment)

Graduate Assistantships for 15/16• If you are interested in an assistantship for next year, you

must submit a letter of intent and resume (including courses for grades last semester) by Tuesday, March 17th – 5:00pm

• Please remember your time will be limited next year as you will have heavier clinic placements (MWF – clinic) for your 2nd year of graduate school• In your letter you should address when you would be available to

complete GA hours if your placement is 3x/week
