    CSBT Training

“This is an exciting time for

CSBT and Cornwall to lead the

    way in sustainable construction.

    The Green Build Hub provides

    Cornwall with the opportunity to

showcase a whole range of sus-

    tainable building technologies,

    innovation and best practice,

    available to both those working

    in construction and the general

    public” - Paul Bright CEO

    Our Vision

The initial training objective is to ensure the design and construction pro-

cess of the Green Build Hub maximises opportunities to create positive ed-

ucational outputs through a range of workshops, data collection, media

input and hands on opportunities. With an ambition to inspire and enhance

take up of careers in sustainable construction.

    Challenges CSBT face

a general disconnection between industry and training providers, and

    industry and academia;

a range of cultural and behavioural issues faced by employers, such as

lack of time and money to invest in training, coupled with a limited un-

    derstanding of where skills and knowledge gaps lie;

education and training providers experiencing cuts in public funding,

which has led to the disappearance of a wide range of courses and

    training opportunities.

    Our Offering

We are committed to sharing our expertise and believe that we learn best by par-

ticipation and that there is no substitute for hands on application. During the con-

struction of GBH we will promote a wide range of opportunities and workshops to

    all interested in Sustainable Construction.

    Our Plan

CSBT plan to provide economically viable training for SMEs and individuals from 1

hour sessions to 3 year part time courses. Here at CSBT we are working hard to

provide a realistic economic vision of sector specific training. Technological

change and the green agenda will continue to impact on the skills needed in con-

struction. Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and the implementation of low

carbon systems and materials will require new skills and adaption along with up

skilling the people working in the sector. CSBT believe that ‘behavioural develop-

ment’ is as important as skills development.

    Training Providers

CSBT have strong links with national industry training providers and aim to make

such accredited training more accessible to the South-West. Training content will

be an amalgamation of member requests, regulatory updates and focused Carbon

    Management workshops.

Charterers will be invited to offer training from their specific expertise to expand

local knowledge and awareness of such skills. This presents an opportunity for

such charterers outreach and promote their business or offering.

NEC 3 ECC Workshops CSBT have hosted two New Engineer-

ing Contract 3 Workshops which in-

volved all parties of our GBH team. The

    workshops helped highlight any poten-

tial problems with the proposed con-

tract. The GBH team are working under

the NEC 3 Engineering and Construc-

    tion Contract which promotes mutual

    trust and co-operation.

The NEC 3 Contract steers away from

traditional contracts and is written in

plain English and promotes clear com-

    munication links.

All attendees were highly focused and

    impressed with the workshop delivery.

    Technology &

    Training

    Manager

    CSBT are delighted to

    welcome Colin Russell to

the team. He is a qualified

    Carpenter with a Degree

    in Sustainable Construc-

    tion. He is working with

us to increase the level of

    training provided by CSBT

    for all charters and the

    general public.

    He is working closely on

    the Green Build Hub pro-

    ject as named Supervisor

    and over seeing the mon-

    itoring equipment instal-

    lation.

    Colin is forging strong

    partnerships with aca-

    demic partners such as

    Cornwall College and

    Plymouth University but

    also many professional

    bodies such as RIBA and

    BRE so CSBT can offer

    high quality training,

    viably here in the South

    West.

Our on-site Timber frame Workshop setup

Students Involvement The current training and qualification offer for offsite construction is largely

inadequate due to a range of factors that have resulted in fragmented pro-

visions being provided. We are pleased to be building our new Green Build

Hub using a form of offsite construction which has enabled an excellent

training opportunity and allows us to share our experience and learning.

This week 4 full time Wood Occupations Level 1 students from Cornwall Col-

lege St Austell are starting on a one day a week, 4 - 6 week, work experience

placement here at CSBT. Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) are a

growing option for the construction industry, moving away from traditional

building methods. It is essential that here at CSBT we are catering for chang-

es in the industry and enable companies and individuals opportunities to

upskill in order to help business to remain viable and flexible.
