In 2014 Scott Larsen returns for his eighth season as head coach of the Saint Benedict tennis team.

Larsen has guided the Blazers to a winning record in every season at the helm, and has led them to the MIAC tournament in six of the last seven seasons. With a lineup

featuring four first-years and no seniors last season, the Blazers went 10-8, recording double-digit wins for the seventh time in Larsen’s seven seasons.

The 2011 MIAC Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year, Larsen has led the Blazers to a top-three finish three times, and enters the 2014 campaign with a 92-54 career record and 44-26 mark in MIAC action.

He led rookie Daley Rupar to All-MIAC honors last season, as she won a team-high 12 matches, which included a team best six MIAC wins playing No. 1 or No. 2 singles. Rupar became the 13th player in Larsen’s tenure to garner All-MIAC accolades.

Five players under Larsen have been named All-MIAC multiple times, including the Blazers’ only four-time All-MIAC player in Kylie Huether, who earned the honor each season from 2008-11.

Before becoming head coach, Larsen served as assistant coach to the CSB tennis program for five years. He also held the position of head boy’s (1996-2006) and girl’s (1996-2003, 2005) tennis coach at Sartell High School.

Larsen completed his Bachelor of Science degree in special education at St. Cloud State, where he also competed in tennis, earning three conference championships.

He has since completed a Master of Arts degree from Concordia University-St. Paul.

The Saint Benedict tennis team has a familiar face back in the red and white this year, as Aly Brandell returns to the team as an assistant coach. Brandell graduated from

CSB in 2012 after spending her final season as the Blazers’ top singles player. She was a two-time All-MIAC performer, gaining the honor after both her junior and senior seasons. She replaces longtime assistant coach Berit Merrill who stepped down over the summer to concentrate more fully on career in the academic counseling department at St. Cloud State. Merrill was hired by head coach Scott Larsen when he took over the Blazer tennis program in 2007 and had been with the Blazers for seven seasons. As a senior Brandell led the Blazer tennis team to a 7-3 mark in MIAC play, advancing to the MIAC tournament for the fourth time in her four years. As a sophomore in 2010, she finished second on the team with 11 total wins, helping the fifth seeded Blazers into the semifinals of the MIAC Tournament. In the fall of 2013, she also began work on her master’s degree, starting graduate school at St. Cloud State.
