Denny Johnson returns for his 28th season with the Saint Benedict softball team, and his second as assistant coach.

The program’s longtime head coach, Johnson spent his first season as assistant coach last year with the Blazers under the direction of new head coach Rachael Click.

In 26 seasons as the Blazers’ head coach, Johnson won 522 career games, earning his 500th victory on Apr. 28, 2011 against Carleton. In MIAC play he won 352 games, while posting a .638 conference winning percentage.

During his tenure he led the Blazers to a pair of MIAC Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. The 1993 season was a memorable one, as he led the Blazers to a record 31 wins, going 19-1 in the MIAC to earn the program’s first conference title.

Johnson posted a winning record in 21 seasons, and at the end of the 2012 season, he closed his head coaching career 20th all-time in NCAA Division III softball coaching victories.

He also serves as the assistant coach for the Blazer basketball team, a position he has held for the past 27 years. There he has helped Blazer basketball to 13 conference titles and 24 20-win seasons. This past season, Johnson and head coach Mike Durbin became the first head-assistant coach combo in DIII history to win 600 games together, doing so with a 68-58 win over Hamline on Jan. 29, 2014.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Johnson also teaches in the exercise science department and oversees equipment needs for all CSB athletic programs.

A St. Cloud native, he graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1968 and St. Cloud State University in 1976 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. Johnson resides in St. Cloud with his wife Robin, and they have two daughters, each CSB graduates.

Rachael Click begins her second season with the Saint Benedict softball team in 2014.

In her first year she led the Blazers to their first 20-win season since 2005, doing so with a shutout of her alma mater in the season finale. In the last game of the regular season, the Blazers beat Gustavus 6-0, the Blazers’ first win over the Gusties since before Click was a player.

Under her direction last year, four players were honored on the All-MIAC team, including first team honorees Lexi Alm and Kim Lidstone. The Blazers’ top-two pitchers – Emily Engelmeier and Rachel Nelson – were named to the All-MIAC Honorable Mention Team.

Lidstone was also named the MIAC Rookie of the Year, the first such honor for a Blazer softball player, while she and Alm we both named to the NFCA All-Midwest Region Second Team.

In addition, Alm and Maddie Lenker were named to the MIAC All-Academic Team.

With Click at the helm the Blazers were well represented at the top of the statistical charts, with Nelson ranking second in the conference in strikeouts (101) and wins (11), each the best marks of her career. Alm and Lidstone were each in the top five in stolen bases, while Alm’s seven home runs ranked fifth.

The Blazers set four new school records last season in Click’s first year, most notable Kim Lidstone’s 31 game hitting streak which was also fourth longest in DIII history. Lidstone also set a new mark with 145 at-bats in the leadoff spot, while her 62 hits were just off the CSB record.

Alm drew a record 23 walks and drove in a record 39 runs last season, and her seven home runs were just one off of her own team record.

Click came to CSB from Jacksonville University where she served as an assistant coach for the Dolphins for two seasons. Prior to coaching at JU, she was an assistant at Wisconsin-Eau Claire for the 2010 season.

A 2009 Gustavus Adolphus College graduate with a degree in elementary education, Click earned Cum Laude Honors in addition to her decorated softball career.

A four-year starter for the Gusties, Click was named MIAC Rookie of the Year in 2006 and received all-conference honors in all four seasons. A team captain during her senior season, she was named MIAC Player of the Year, while earning All-America honors and a spot on the NCAA Championship All-Tournament team. In the 2009 season, Click led the Gusties to a MIAC title and NCAA Regional Championship, finishing just a game shy of the national championship.

She holds Gustavus single-season records in batting average, slugging percentage, home runs, RBIs, and total bases. Click also holds career records in slugging percentage, on base percentage, home runs, RBIs, and total bases.

She was named Female Athlete of the Year in 2009 at Gustavus and is a NCAA Post Graduate Scholar. A well rounded student-athlete, she is also a two-time ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American.
