Directions for the following 7 (Seven) items: Read the following two passages and answer the items that followeach passage. Your answers to these items should bebased on the passages Only.
PASSAGE–1
This strategy of intensi ed acquisition of equityoil has also met with considerable scepticism frominternational oil market analysts. They argue thatoverseas investments are unlikely to shelter countriesfrom oil market volatility. They argue that equityinvestments by China (or India) in distant producingelds in Africa, Latin America, or West Asia are notlikely to improve the physical security of energy
supply. Whether purchased in the open market, or produced by its national oil companies, they will haveto effectively pay the world market price either directlyor in foregone revenues if China were to ship every
barrel of equity oil back home. In fact, according toindustry press reports, most of the oil currently
produced by Chinese oil companies abroad is notshipped back to China, but instead it is sold in marketscloser to production.
Crude oil is fungible and the market for this
commodity is globally integrated. Due to the laws ofsupply and demand, any oil that is pumped from theearth and added to the world market will increasesupply relative to demand and tend to have a downwardeffect on price. Any increase in demand relative tosupply would tend to push prices upward. Even ifnational oil companies continue their acquisitionstrategy, it is very unlikely that they would besuccessful in satisfying demand or insulate its economythrough their acquisitions and will continue to be
affected by the world market like other countries. They also argue that in their rush to stake claims
around the world, Chinese and Indian companies acceptterms that would often not be considered commerciallyviable for the oil majors, who base their investmentcriteria assuming a long-term average price of oil at
between $20-30 per barrel. If oil continues selling for$50-60 per barrel, these assets may be an advantage,
but if prices drop considerably, the results could bequite painful.
1. Why oil market analysts are not very much excitedabout acquisition strategy of oil companies?
1. Volatility of oil market.
2. Wrong assumption of Crude Oil Prices.
3. Since, Crude oil is a rare commodity.
4. Acquisition or any investment abroad may nothelp in achieving domestic demands.
Select the correct answers from the codes given
below: (a) 2 and 4 only (b) 1 and 4 only
(c) 1, 2 and 4 only (d) All 1, 2, 3 and 4.
2. According to the passage, how inherent nature oflaws of supply and demand affect the Chinese (orIndian) oil companies?
1. As demand and supply are not co-relative.
2. Demand relative to supply is directly proportional to the price.
3. Supply relative to demand is indirectly proportional to the price.
Select the correct answers from the codes given below:
(a) 1 and 3 only (b) 2 and 3 only
(c) 1 and 2 only (d) All 1, 2 and 3.
3. Which of the following can act as a rm advice forChinese and Indian oil companies?
(a) Explore oil resources domestically.
(b) Aggressive buying or acquisition should begiven a second thought.
(c) Explore crude oil abroad but sell it domestically.
(d) None of the above.

8/9/2019 CSAT 1500 (D) Question Paper
4/32
PASSAGE–2More recent approaches to structural change view
economic growth as a process of transformation and notconvergence to a steady state growth path. Technological
changes are seen to lie at the heart of economic growthas they provide the incentives for capital accumulationto drive ef ciency and yield the bene ts of increasingreturns to scale. The evolution of the industrial structureshould involve technological sophistication and upgradation, which generates a premium for aggregate
productivity growth in the manufacturing sector. Thismeans that economic growth is characterized by thecreation of high tech industries and the replacement ofold industries. The former drives growth processes byaccelerating the pace at which output, employment and
productivity in the economy grow.Increasingly, development practitioners and policymakers recognize that economic developmentrequires continuous diversifying and upgrading fromexisting sectors/industries to new high productivityones. Convergence in labor productivity at the sectorand industry level is seen as an important aspect ofgrowth. The catching up process in manufacturingresults from technology transfer and is a key driver ofrapid productivity growth. Within manufacturing, convergence is more rapid in technology- and
knowledge-intensive modern sectors rather than in primary and traditional sectors; it appears to be leastrapid in low technology intensive textiles and clothingsectors and most rapid in sectors that are technologyintensive. Technology and knowledge intensive sectors/industries produce tradable goods and can be rapidlyintegrated into global production networks, facilitatingtechnology transfer and absorption. Even when they
produce just for the home market, they operate undercompetitive threat from ef cient suppliers from abroad, requiring that they upgrade their operations and remainef cient. If, instead poor economies get their resourcesstuck in traditional agriculture, selected non-tradableservices, and especially informal economic activities, the forces of convergence may be blunted or failedentirely. The lack of productivity growth and the lack ofstructural change can thus reinforce each other trappingthe economy in a low growth trajectory.
Structural change should therefore remove constraintsfrom productivity growth. When labor and other resourcesmove from less productive to more productive activities, economy grows even if there is no productivity growth
within sectors. 4. According to passage, how knowledge intensive
modern sectors will be bene cial for economicgrowth?
1. It helps in production of those goods that can be sell in the global market.
2. It helps in bringing competition from abroad. 3. It brings new technology and eventually
productivity growth. Select the correct answer from the codes given
below: (a) 1 and 2 only (b) 2 and 3 only (c) 1 and 3 only (d) Only 1 5. Structural change in the Economic Growth can be
viewed as– (a) Clearing obstacles in the path of productivity
growth.
(b) Avoiding agriculture and other least productivesectors.
(c) Increasing labour productivity.
(d) Technological upgradation in primary andtraditional sectors.
6. According to passage, what is/are the bene t/bene tsof convergence of technologies in manufacturingsector?
1. High productive growth. 2. Industries understanding the importance of
being technologically ef cient. 3. Bringing new changes in low technological
industries like textile and clothing.
Select the correct answers from the codes given below:
(a) 1 only (b) 2 only (c) 1 and 2 only (d) 2 and 3 only

biodiversity, providing a rich base for high valueagriculture, and spectacular landscapes for sustainabletourism.
The Himalayan ecosystem is vulnerable andsusceptible to the impacts and consequences of (a)changes on account of natural causes, (b) climatechange resulting from anthropogenic emissions and (c)developmental paradigms of the modern society.
The Himalayas house one of the largest resourcesof snow and ice and its glaciers which form a sourceof fresh water for the perennial rivers such as the Indus, the Ganga, and the Brahmaputra. Glacial melt mayimpact their long-term lean season ows, with adverse
impacts on the economy in terms of water availabilityand hydropower generation. Recession of Himalayanglaciers will pose a major danger to the country.Currently available data gathered by multiples ofinstitutions without a coordinated effort do not indicatesystematic trends of recession of Himalayan glaciers.
The National Action Plan on Climate Change(NAPCC) Launched National Mission for Sustainingthe Himalayan Ecosystem. The Mission needs todeliver better understanding of the coupling betweenthe Himalayan ecosystem and the climate factors and
provides inputs for Himalayan Sustainable Developmentwhile addressing also the protection of a fragileecosystem. This will require the joint effort ofclimatologists, glaciologists and other experts.Exchange of information with the South Asiancountries and countries sharing the Himalayan ecologywill also be required. There is a need to establish an
observational and monitoring network for theHimalayan environment to assess freshwater resourcesand health of the ecosystem.
21. Primary objective of National Action Plan onClimate Change can be met successfully if –
1. Climatologists, glaciologists and other experts become indisputable in their theory of climatechange.
2. Environment becomes more sustainableespecially Himalayan ecosystem.

23. According to passage, why and how melting ofglaciers poses some serious challenges to the Indianlandmass?
(a) Glacial melt will adversely impact the naturalwater bodies of Indian landmass.
(b) Glacial melt will alter the biodiversity andeventually affect the tourism.
(c) Glacial melt will change the ow of some perennial rivers and affect the hydro-powergeneration in Indian landmass also.
(d) Though glacial melt will have some adverseimpact on the ecosystem but we are yet toascertained it nally.
24. Preserving the natural biodiversity of HimalayanEcosystem is possible through the channels of –
1. Inter country scientific co-ordination forHimalayan Ecology.

PASSAGE–2
Rural development is primarily concerned withuplifting people out of poverty. The impact of globalizationon rural societies, there economy, environment musttherefore be viewed through this perspective.
Major aspects of globalization that are related torural life or its development include the commercializationof agriculture and expansion of agro-industries,liberlization of international trade and marketing forfood and other agricultural products, intensi cationand internal labour migraton, increase in privatizationof resources, services and the wider use of informationand communicaton technologies. Thus, the wave ofglobalization which hit India at the end of the last century
and it affected all spheres of life. Labour migration tocities from rural areas in search of employment was acommon phenomenon earlier. This was for variousreasons especially for luxurious life, handsome salaryand for numerous job opportunities. Similarly, earlierthere was a ‘minimum wage act’ and now equal wagefor all is provided due to the impact of globalisation.
Today the percentage of village people attendingthe call of nature in open elds is reduced. The goodroad infrastructure makes them successful to saleagricultural products from villages to goods marketsin cities and towns. As a result they can earn good priceof their product. Life in rural India was miserable dueto non-availability of electricity. Several villages have
been elec tr if ied now. It is a big benefi t of rura ldevelopment. Globalization is creating much differenceto rural life through electricity.
The impact of globalization on Indian urban andrural life has a tremendous in uence which is both
positive as well as negative. The Indian urban and rurallife is viewed as the two faces of the same coin. They are
mutually interdependent and both shows a greaterimpact of globalization.
The impact of globalization on Indian rural economyhas given a new face to modern India. There is a rapidand positive progress towards society. Globalization haschanged India as one of the global superpowers. However, rural India must tread cautiously on the pathof globalization as its negative effects can prove to becatastrophic.
25. Which of the following can be inferred as the
outcome of gloablization on rural India? 1. More options to sale various agriculture
products. 2. Improvement in quality of life. 3. Change in labour migration.
Select the correct answers from the codes given below:
(a) 1 only (b) 2 only (c) 1 and 2 only (d) 2 and 3 only
26. Why author is showing some concern regardingglobalisation towards the end of the passage?
(a) Globalisation sometimes fails to achieve itsobjective.
(b) Globalisation with all its welcoming outcomeshas some negative impacts as well.
(c) Globalisation may not pull people out of poverty.
(d) Globalisation has changed India but not therural life and rural India.
27. Which of the following can be concluded as thechange from pre-globalization era to post-globalization era?
1. Rural electri cation. 2. Luxurious life. 3. Increase in technological facilities. 4. Low labour migration.

PASSAGE–1
Few people in America today sew all their own
clothes, grow all their own food, build their own
houses, or buy only products made in their own states.
It would cost too much and take too much time, especially since Americans can acquire such items
in the open market with relative ease. The same
pr inci ple of pr ac ti cal it y an d cos t app li es on an
international scale. It makes economic sense to buy
a product from another who specializes in such
production or who can make it more easily or for less
cost. Indeed, access to a greater variety of goods and
services is the purpose of trade.
Imports, then, are not a sacri ce, a necessary evilfor the good of exporting. One exports so that one may
acquire goods and services in return. This logic is
evident on a personal level as well. A person works so
that he has the means to buy necessities and possibly
even luxuries. One does not make purchases in order
to justify working.
Free trade is the only type of truly fair trade
because it offers consumers the most choices and the
best opportunities to improve their standard of living. It fosters competition, spurring companies to innovate
and develop better products and to bring more of
their goods and services to market, keeping prices
low and quality high in order to retain or increase their
market share.

PASSAGE–2
Enhancing food security at the household level is anissue of great importance for a developing country like
India where millions of poor suffer from lack of purchasing power and malnutrition. Food and nutritionalsecurity implies the availability of food at all times, thatall persons can have access to it, that it is nutritionallyadequate in terms of quantity, quality and variety, and thatis acceptable within the given culture.
It is being increasingly recognized that rightsapproach would be useful to achieve food and nutritionalsecurity in the country. It may be dif cult to make theright completely justiciable. However, rights approach
puts pressures on public action and would lead to effectiveimplementation of the policies and programmes.
Right to food is part of an overall goal of achievingright to development. The adoption by the United Nationsin 1986 of the Declaration on the Right to Developmentwas the culmination of a long process of internationaldeliberation on human rights which was perceived fromthe very beginning as an integrated whole of all civil,
political, economic, social, and cultural rights.
50. Which of the following would be True about FoodSecurity?
1. Adequate availability of food products for all. 2. It has same parameter everywhere or all over
the world.

8/9/2019 CSAT 1500 (D) Question Paper
26/32
Directions for the following 4 (Four) items: Read the following passage and answer the items that follows.Your answers to these items should be based on the
passage only .
PASSAGE
The main greenhouse gas is water vapour (H 2O),which is responsible for about two-thirds of the naturalgreenhouse effect. In the atmosphere, water moleculescapture the heat that the earth radiates and then re-radiate into all directions, warming earth’s surface,
before it is eventually radiated back to space. Watervapour in the atmosphere is part of the hydrologicalcycle, a closed system circulating water of which there
is a nite amount on earth from the oceans and land tothe atmosphere and back again through evaporationand transpiration, condensation and precipitation.
Human activities do not add water vapour to theatmosphere. However, warmer air can hold much moremoisture, so increasing temperatures further intensifyclimate change. The main contributor to the enhanced(manmade) greenhouse effect is carbon dioxide (CO 2).Globally, it accounts for over 60% of the enhancedgreenhouse gas effect. In industrialised countries, CO 2
makes up more than 80% of greenhouse gas emissions. There is a nite amount of carbon on earth, which, likewater, is part of a cycle – the carbon cycle. This is avery complex system in which carbon moves throughthe atmosphere, the terrestrial biosphere and oceans.Plants absorb CO 2 from the atmosphere during
photosynthesis. They use the carbon to build theirtissue, and they release it back to the atmosphere whenthey die and decompose. The bodies of animals (andhumans) also contain carbon since they are built fromcarbon taken in from eaten plants - or animals that eat
plants . This carbon is released as CO 2 when they breathe (respiration) and when they die and decompose.Fossil fuels are the fossilised remains of dead plantsand animals formed over millions of years under certainconditions, and that's why they contain a lot of carbon.Broadly speaking, coal is the remnant of buried forests
while oil is converted oceanic plant life. (Oceansabsorb CO 2 which, in dissolved form, is used by marinelife in photosynthesis.).
68. More intensi cation of Climate Change is mainlydue to:
1. Fossil fuels.
2. Green house effect.
3. Both natural and man-made activities.
Select the correct answers from the codes given below:
(a) 1 and 2 only (b) 1 and 3 only
(c) 2 and 3 only (d) All 1, 2 and 3
69. If we say that Carbon Cycle is equally responsiblefor Climate Change, then what would be the correct
justi cation for it?
(a) Carbon cycle increases the chances of greenhouse gas effect.
(b) Because of the inherent natural process of plants and animals life cycle, net carbon owdoes not change in the atmosphere.
(c) Carbon cycle increases the availability of CO 2 in the atmosphere.
(d) None of these.
70. Which of the following can be properly consider asthe assumption of the author, with reference to Greenhouse gases?
1. Elements of greenhouse gases are always present on Earth.
2. Industrialised countries should hold moreresponsibility to cut greenhouse gases emission.
3. It would be incorrect to hold human activitiesresponsible for greenhouse gases emission.
Select the correct answers from the codes given below:
(a) 1 only
(b) 3 only
(c) 1 and 2 only
(d) All 1, 2 and 3
