Forest Enterprise Zone

�  Population of around ten thousand people. �  Highly skilled - under utilised industrial workforce. �  Communities in zone feature in top ten percent on

Welsh index of multiple deprivation. �  The same communities are surrounded by the

largest urban forest in Europe. �  Much of the forest now being removed due to p.

ramorum (Larch tree disease). �  Abundance of publicly owned natural resources

available to spark community regeneration. �  Proven to be a resilient and motivated community

for positive change.

�  Creates provision of biomass and log fuels for local consumers. �  Operates a small team to harvest / extract logs and produce fuel. �  Negotiates and enters agreements with land owners to plant crops

for future energy production. �  Collects waste residue from local forest operations and sawmilling to

convert to biomass fuels (pellets, etc.). �  Drying sheds and other fuel drying facilities. �  Creates energy for use on site and export to grid. �  Site managers of Micro Business Village. �  Demonstration facilities relating to renewable energy production.

range of hospitality facilities throughout the region. �  Suppliers of satellite cafés/food offer in Zone. �  Providing trading link with Zones, food produces and manufacturers. �  Developer of a Welsh Valleys Cuisine (WVC). �  Ultimately through training local young people, WVC chefs will be

made available to local and regional establishments. �  The Chapel are food growers in community gardens and developers

of new food production areas within woodlands.

�  Utilising foraged forest and upland products, such as spruce tip, wimberry, honey or nettle.

�  In 2013, 25% of British adults (equating to some 13 million) stated that they have consumed a craft beer over the past six months.

�  Rhondda Brewery Company operated from site, 1865 to1928.

�  Manufacture of ethical outdoor type clothing. �  The Rhigos brand name is relating to well loved mountain road

running between Treherbert and Hirwaun. �  Sector skills available in local community due to historic high end

clothing manufacturing. �  Burberrys manufactured in Ynyswen Treherbert until 2007. �  Estimated that UK outdoor retail clothing market (not including cross

over sports such as mountain biking or more general outdoor recreation) to be worth £1.426bn annually.

Micro Hydro Schemes At present Nant Saerbren, (WTOW Ltd)

�  Harvesting hydro energy in the Rhondda. �  Nant Searbren Scheme is hoped to be operational by spring

2016. �  Partners Interlink RCT and TGV Hydro have undertaken surveys

in the Zone that have identified several other viable schemes.

�  Sales of second hand mopeds and electric scooters. �  Regional moped / electric scooter recycling center. �  Bicycle, moped and electric scooter parts / repair service. �  Hire of unique motorised pedal-bikes (visitor offer). �  Promoters of low carbon community mobility though better /

safer access to mopeds, electric scooters and all necessary related equipment & advanced training.

�  Each business idea has been costed, with estimates of part-time, full-time and seasonal jobs that could be created.

�  Each business idea is being considered in terms of skills needed, skills already available in the area, and then vocational training plans and resources needed.

Welsh Government have set the challenge to make Welsh natural resources more useful and relevant to our communities and businesses.

�  The Well-being of Future Generations Bill, placing 7 well-being goals into law, and requiring

public bodies to apply the sustainable development principle to the way they plan their services.

�  The Planning Bill, to improve the existing planning process to ensure the right development is located in the right place.

�  Environment Bill, new integrated, area based planning approach to natural resource management. It is intended that this new framework will link existing tools and processes, to deliver economic, social and environmental benefits for Wales.

�  Heads Of The Valleys Woodland Plan, creating opportunities for deprived community to work with statutory bodies, community organisations and private business to deliver social outcomes through sustainable use of hyper local publicly owned natural recourses.

With this Welsh Government and Statutory Agency support, we see great opportunities to assist positive change for thousands of people

living and working across the South Wales Valleys.

�  Cwm Saebren Steering Group. (CSG), brought together some 4 years

ago, originally led by Forestry Commission Wales FCW (now Natural Recourses Wales, NRW). Part of the Heads of the Valleys Strategic Regeneration Area work. Present day interests including green access, health and wellbeing and community economic regeneration though use of landscape. Membership includes local community people and groups, statutory agencies WG(cynefin), NRW, NHS, RCT CBC and South Wales Police, leading community and environmental organisations, local schools and local / national business people.

�  Welcome to our Woods, NRW/Big Lottery funded project has worked with over 500 upper Rhondda Fawr community members since 2013 and has supported development of constituted community groups in the area, one group is The Woodland Valley Group (WVG). The WVG is playing a central role in the Zones social venture collaborations.

�  Enlightened Welsh businesses and business people, who share our social responsibility agenda.

�  Corporate / Private Investors, who desire to stretched their existing brands / portfolios, Into the developing Welsh Social Venture arena.
