ATTENDANCE AT BALCH SPRINGS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY IS A PRIVILEGE - NOT A RIGHT

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Balch Springs Christian Academy has been established as an educational ministry of Seagoville

Road Baptist Church. It is our purpose to train Christian leaders. We believe that it is the moral obligation of the church to train our children spiritually and academically.

We believe that all subjects taught in school are within the framework of God’s Word. The courses of

reading, writing, and arithmetic are essentials for successful Christian leaders. We will guide the students with God’s help to a mastery of these subjects. God says in I Corinthians 14:40, “Let all things be done decently and in order.” Thus, Balch Springs Christian Academy shall be run according to God’s standards.

Because we are training future Christian leaders, we will highly encourage our students to attend

fundamental, Bible-believing colleges and universities. We want every parent who enrolls his children in our school to fully understand our purpose in starting Balch Springs Christian Academy.

STATEMENT OF FAITH

At B.S.C.A., we believe in the light of the Word of God. We, in our educational ministry, stand

committed to the following truths: We believe the Bible to be the inspired, authoritative Word of God, and it is our final authority in

matters of faith and practice. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the

Holy Spirit. We believe that God, by His Word and for His glory, freely created the world from nothing. He made

man in His image, as the crown of creation, that men might have fellowship with Him. Tempted by Satan, man rebelled against God. Being estranged from his Maker, yet responsible to Him, he became subject to divine wrath, inwardly depraved and apart from grace, incapable of returning to God.

We believe in the deity of Christ, in His virgin birth, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the

right hand of the Father where He now acts as mediator and advocate, and in His imminent return in power and glory.

We believe that because of the exceeding sinfulness of the human nature; that the regeneration by

the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for the rebirth of the lost and sinful man and that all who receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith are sealed by the Holy Spirit for an effective Christian life and witness.

BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019

We believe in the resurrection of both the lost and the saved; they who are lost unto the resurrection of damnation, and they who are saved unto the resurrection of everlasting life and fellowship with God. Heaven is the place of eternal blessedness for the saved. Hell is the place of eternal conscious punishment for the lost.

THE HOLY BIBLE

Our total existence, both physically and mentally, is based upon God’s Word, the Bible. All the

reasons and promises for this existence can be found in this great Book. We should treat our Bible especially carefully. It is, without question, the most important textbook one will ever encounter. When other books fail to

give you the answers and guidance, the Bible never fails! Below are guidelines a student should follow during the school year concerning his Bible: Every student must have his own Authorized King James Version Bible, not mom’s or dad’s, brother’s

or sister’s, etc. Any other version is not acceptable. Please check with the school office if you have any doubt.

Bring a Bible to class every day. (We recommend two Bibles – one for church and home and one for

school.) A student should make it a habit to read his Bible every day while at school. All memory work is from the Authorized King James Version and students will be graded according to

this version.

WHY A CHRISTIAN EDUCATION?

“No student is greater than his teacher; but every student, when he has completed his training, will be

like his teacher.” Proverbs 22:6 says that our children will develop an appetite for whatever they are taught, and when they grow older and more mature, they will not depart from their teaching.

Both the Old and New Testaments teach us that the responsibilities of the training of our children are

far reaching. Unfortunately, some parents have compromised God’s principles of education, and they are seeing the results in children with great minds using them for the work of the world and Satan.

Colossians 2:2 & 3 says, “…all wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ.” That simply means that

any other knowledge is counterfeit and will profit nothing but to exalt man. Our government schools are doing everything possible to remove God and the Lordship of Christ from education. They are therefore teaching the philosophy and traditions of man – HUMANISM!

BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019

Why a Christian Education? The Bible commands it for God’s children.

A Christian education can prevent children from hearing instruction that could cause them to err.

A Christian education can develop an appetite for true wisdom and knowledge. A Christian education can develop Godly character. A Christian education can prevent our children from being taught by non-Christian teachers. A Christian education can prevent our children from learning the vain philosophies. A Christian education can teach our children to “walk with God.” A Christian education can teach our children that their heritage and future are in God and the

Bible. A Christian education can allow you, the parent, to remain in charge of your child’s education.

The children belong to God, not the government. A Christ-centered education is the plus in the education offered at B. S. C. A. Each staff member is a

believer in our Lord Jesus Christ and believes that as a Christian, he is charged with offering each child who enters the school an education that will honor Christ.

We offer a high standard of academics that encourages students to think clearly, logically, and

independently. It endeavors to instruct children in spiritual matters as they are set forth in the Bible. The program at B. S. C. A. seeks to build Christian character into the lives of our students through the exercise of constant Christian discipline. This discipline will enable each student to live uprightly with his fellow man and to experience emotional stability.

PURPOSES AND GOALS

The purpose in building a private Christian school is to obey the Bible imperatives of Deuteronomy

6:5-7a, “…thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children.”

The goal at B. S. C. A. is to provide and maintain an environment that will most effectively train and

mold a student’s and parent’s growth (physical, spiritual, emotional, academic, and social) into a likeness of the mind of Christ.

Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go…” Teaching is training. Training for

life must include training for eternity. A Christian school is an extension of the Christian home in training young people for time and eternity

in a Christian environment. School staff work closely with parents to train the whole child.

Christian Americanism: B.S.C.A. places emphasis upon the greatness of America’s heritage and the sacrifices of her heroes. Each class day is begun with prayer and pledges to the Bible, the Christian flag, the Texas flag, and the American flag. America is a republic which guarantees liberties to educate and to preserve freedom. B.S.C.A. unashamedly teaches the Biblical doctrines of self-discipline, respect for those in authority, obedience to law, and love for our country and her flag.

The goal of B.S.C.A. is that each student will find Christ as his Lord and Savior. Through his

Christian training, a student will develop the mind of Christ and Godly character through a dependence on the Bible. It is our goal to produce strong Christian leaders for our world, nation, and community.

B.S.C.A. desires to unite home, church, and school. We believe these major institutions should work

together to complement the efforts of each other. It is a major goal at B.S.C.A. to assist parents in establishing one set of goals and priorities that will be reinforced in the home, church, and school.

BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019

Class times are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students will be monitored between 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. B.S.C.A. will not be responsible for students on campus before 7:30 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m.

ATTENDANCE

Mandatory attendance: State law mandates that a student must attend ninety percent of school days each semester (two 9-week grading periods); therefore, if a student does not attend 81 days due to excused or unexcused absences, he must make up days in summer school. A student will not receive final grades, report cards, or transcripts until these days are completed. Days may not be made up on teacher-in-service days or student holidays. An elementary student leaving school before 11:30 a.m. will be counted as absent for the full day. An elementary student arriving at school after 11:30 a.m. will be counted as absent for ½ of the day. A student in the 7th – 12th grade is counted absent in each class missed. If a student in the 7th – 12th grade arrives tardy or leaves early during a class, he will be counted absent if he is not in the classroom for 40 of the 55-minute schedule (approximately 70% of the class). On chapel days, when classes are reduced to 40 minutes, a student must attend at least 30 minutes of the class to be counted present. Absentee notes: When a student returns to school after being absent, he must bring a note from the parent/guardian stating the reason for the absence. A student who visits a doctor or dentist during school hours should bring, on the day he returns to school, a letter from the doctor or dentist showing the date and time of the visit. A student in Pre-K through 6th grade should take the note to his teacher, not to the school office. A student in the 7th through 12th grade should take his note to the school office and get an absentee form before going to class. Parents should not call the school office to report absences unless the student will be absent three or more days. Tardiness: If a student is tardy, he should go directly to the classroom. If the tardy is excused, the parent should send a note; otherwise the student will be counted as having an unexcused tardy. A student should only report to the school office if he has a note from a doctor/dentist visit which occurred during school hours. Requests for make-up work: If a student is going to be absent three or more days, a parent/guardian may request homework through the school office.

BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019

Unexcused absences/tardiness: Any work missed by a student due to an unexcused absence or tardiness cannot be made up. An unexcused absence or tardy will be defined as car breakdown (other than on the way to school), oversleeping, looking for lost items, unplanned vacation, any other circumstance that could have been avoided, or no written excuse from doctor/dentist or parent/guardian. Truancy: If a student is absent without permission from parents, school authorities, or other authorities, he is truant. A student who cuts/skips class(es), who leaves school without permission, or who refuses to go to class is also truant. Truancy will result in a two-day suspension. Run-a-ways: A student who runs away from home during the school year will not be allowed to B.S.C.A. Residence: Once a student is admitted, he must reside with his parent/guardian throughout the remainder of the school year. Planned vacation: A student may make up work for one five-day or less planned vacation per year if at least a two-week notice is given. This vacation will be counted as excused absences.

ILLNESS DURING SCHOOL

Office staff will contact the parents if a child becomes ill. A student will be sent home for illness if one or more of the following conditions are present: 1. Fever above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. (Temperature will be taken in the office.) 2. Vomiting 3. Rash 4. Other condition contrary to good health, which may be determined by the faculty.

A student will not be allowed to go home because he “feels bad.” Please do not tell a child to call home if he feels badly. If the student is ill, he should remain at home until well enough to complete the school day.

MEDICATION

Medication will be administered through the school office only. State law prevents non-prescription medication from being administered by the school.

Prescription medications should be placed in a zip lock bag with instructions from the parent or doctor stating dosage and time(s) to be given. Instructions should include a phone number. Long-term medication should be sent in weekly amounts. Short-term medication should be sent one dose per day, pre-measured, and in a dispenser.

BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019

Parents must bring medication to the office and pick it up there. Medications will not be released to students. No student will be allowed possession of any type of medication. Asthma inhalers and cough drops are the only exceptions. Students found with possession of prescribed medication or drugs will be subject to permanent expulsion according to the rule on drug possession.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

State law requires each child entering school to have certain immunizations. Students are also required to have vision and hearing screening done every two years. Immunization records and results of vision and hearing screening must be provided at the time of enrollment. All health records must be signed by a physician or the health department. A parent/guardian who is in doubt as to whether or not a child meets the required standards should consult a physician.

SCHEDULE OF IMMUNIZATIONS

Check with the school office for the required immunizations schedule.

SCHOOL OFFICE/CONCERNS/COMPLAINTS

All matters are to be handled through the school office.

The office secretary/registrar may not listen to concerns/complaints about any matters not directly related to the business offices. Complaints/concerns about a teacher: A parent/guardian should not call the secretary/registrar to complain about a teacher. Early dismissal: If a child is to be removed from class for any reason, a parent/guardian must come to the school office and sign the student out. If anyone other than the parent/guardian is to check out the student, the parent must call with the specified information. If a student drives, the parent must call the school office to give permission for that student to leave campus. Items brought to school: Any item brought to the school for a student should be brought to the office. Teacher phone calls/conferences: All requests for parent/teacher conferences should be scheduled through the school office. All phone calls to teachers should be directed to the school office. Students or parents/guardians should not call teachers directly.

WITHDRAWALS

The request to withdraw a student will only be accepted from the parent/guardian of the student or by the Board of Trustees as a disciplinary measure. A student is not permitted to withdraw himself or sign the withdrawal slip for his parent/guardian unless he is eighteen years of age by the first day of school. A student who chooses to marry must withdraw. The reason for withdrawal will be noted on the withdrawal form and student transcripts. No records will be released on a student who has an outstanding balance on tuition or other fees, sports equipment, outstanding cheer fees, or unreturned library materials. Transcripts will be forwarded to the receiving school when the student’s account is cleared. All students transferring from B.S.C.A. are subject to testing by the receiving school. Schools also reserve the right to refuse to accept any credit earned at B.S.C.A.

GRADE REPORTS (Progress Reports and Report Cards)

Each parent/guardian should have a school calendar which lists the dates that all grade reports are issued. Progress reports are issued after the 3rd and 6th week of each grading period. Report cards are issued after the nine weeks have ended. All grade reports should be signed by the parent/guardian and returned the following day. Elementary report cards are issued directly to the parent/guardian during “Open House” the evening of report card day.

BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019

A student in the 7th – 12th grade receives his report cards from the homeroom teacher on report card day. A student who does not return either a progress report or a report card must pay $1.00 per document for replacement. If a parent/guardian has any questions regarding a grade report, he should call the school office and schedule an appointment with the teacher issuing the report. If a student does not bring his grade reports home on the designated day, the parent/guardian should call the office and ask for the teacher to contact him concerning missing reports.

ZEROES, LATE WORK, & MAKE-UP WORK POLICY

Once a zero is taken, no work can be submitted to replace the zero.

No extra credit will be given for zeroes or missing grades caused by unexcused absences, unexcused tardiness or suspensions. No late work will be accepted, except for excused absences or excused tardiness. Unless a student has an extended illness (three or more days), requests for make-up work will not be accepted by the office. Each teacher will issue the make-up work when the student returns to school.

GRADING SCALE, PASS/FAIL CRITERIA, & EXAM EXEMPTIONS

Grade scale: The following scale is used to calculate the letter grade for students in K-5 – 12th grades and to figure the GPA (grade point average) for students in the 9th – 12th grades. Grade points Grade points 100 = A+ 4.0 79-77 = C+ 1.9 – 1.7 99-97 = A+ 3.9 – 3.7 76-74 = C 1.6 – 1.4 96-94 = A 3.6 – 3.4 73-70 = C- 1.3 – 1.0 93-90 = A- 3.3 – 3.0 *FAILING* 89-87 = B+ 2.9 – 2.7 69-67 = D+ 0 59-0 = F 86-84 = B 2.6 – 2.4 66-64 = D 0 83-80 = B- 2.3 – 2.0 63-60 = D- 0 Pass/Fail policies: A student failing four or more core courses (English, math, social studies, science) during the school year will not be permitted to return to Balch Springs Christian Academy the following school year. In the 1st – 6th grades, to be promoted, a student must have a 70 average when all of the final grades are averaged. If a student does not average 70, he will be retained; or he may attend and pass summer school to be promoted.

Page 15: CRUSADERS - Balch Springs Christian Academy · 2019-07-19 · BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019 ATTENDANCE AT BALCH SPRINGS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY IS A PRIVILEGE - NOT A RIGHT

BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019

In the 6th grade, a student who does not have a 70% average may not participate in the 6th grade graduation ceremony. In the 7th – 12th grades, a student can only be promoted if he passes all classes. All failed classes must be made up in summer school. Exam exemptions: A student in the 9th – 12th grades (or an honors student taking classes with 9th – 12th grade students) may be exempt from the semester exam and/or final exam using the following criteria: Semester average of 95 or better with three or less absences for the semester; Semester average of 90-94 with two or less absences for the semester; Semester average of 85-89 with one or less absence for the semester; Semester average of 80-84 with zero absences for the semester.

TELEPHONE/MESSAGES

A student may be permitted to use the school office telephones only with permission. A parent/guardian who needs to contact a student should leave the message in the office.

CONFERENCES

A parent/guardian wishing to speak with a teacher should call the school office to request a conference. The office will notify the teacher, and the teacher will contact the parent/guardian to set a date and time for the conference. B.S.C.A. encourages communication between the parents and teachers. However, a parent/guardian should not attempt to hold a conference with a teacher without an appointment, especially just before or just after school. A parent/guardian who has an appointment should check in with the office before going to see a teacher or visit a classroom.

PARTIES

Parties are not part of the regular classroom routine. Homeroom mothers will sponsor holiday parties during the school year. All parties must be approved by the teacher. The teacher will notify the office of the date and time. Requests must be submitted several days in advance. A teacher has the right to decline party requests in the classroom. If a parent chooses to send cupcakes or other treats for a birthday, these items will be given to the teacher for distribution at lunch. Exchanging gifts during school hours is discouraged.

LOST AND FOUND

Items left in the gym, outside the school building, and in other areas are placed in a container across from the Registrar’s office. If properly identified, items may be claimed by a parent or student. B.S.C.A. will dispose of unclaimed items.

Page 16: CRUSADERS - Balch Springs Christian Academy · 2019-07-19 · BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019 ATTENDANCE AT BALCH SPRINGS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY IS A PRIVILEGE - NOT A RIGHT

BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019

B.S.C.A. cannot be responsible for items left unattended.

NO OPEN CAMPUS, GUESTS

Open campus: We do not have an open campus. We do discourage parents taking students out for lunch or parties. A parent may not bring in “take-out orders” except on a child’s birthday. Guests: If a student wants to have a guest come with him to school, or visit him at school, the guest must be approved by the administrator/principal and must abide by this dress code: female guests must wear a modest dress/skirt that covers the knee; male guests must wear a shirt with a collar and dress pants. When a guest arrives at B.S.C.A. , he must check in with the person who issued the approval.

EXAM DAYS

A student may not be in an unscheduled classroom to study, help the teacher, or for any other reason while another class is testing. An exempt student arriving early must report to the principal’s office and remain there until his scheduled exam. No student may wait for his exam outside the school building. A student may not leave the class early even if he finishes his exam early, unless the office sends for him. A student may not leave the campus unless a parent/guardian comes to the office and signs him out. A student who leaves campus without permission will be considered truant. A parent/guardian may call the school office to give permission for a student who drives to leave campus in his automobile. A note will not be accepted. A student who drives a vehicle may not leave with another student in his vehicle unless both parents have called the school office.

STUDENT DRIVERS & PARKING PERMITS

A student who drives to school must have a parking permit on file and will be assigned a parking place. Proof of insurance, as required by Texas state law, must be provided before a parking permit will be issued. Parent/guardian must sign the permit. No student may drive a vehicle not listed on his permit. A student driver must enter and exit through the rear gates. A student driver must maintain a speed limit of 10 miles per hour. Failure to obey the speed limit will result in the following punishment: 1st offense – warning recorded; 2nd offense – loss of privilege to park in the parking lot.

Page 17: CRUSADERS - Balch Springs Christian Academy · 2019-07-19 · BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019 ATTENDANCE AT BALCH SPRINGS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY IS A PRIVILEGE - NOT A RIGHT

BSCA Student Handbook - Revised July 2019

A student may not be involved in car racing, vehicle blocking, or sitting in or congregating around parked cars before, during, or after school. A student may not go to a vehicle during the school day without permission from the office. Failure to obey all the student driver rules of B.S.C.A. can result in loss of privilege to park on the campus. During school hours, a student who drives may not leave campus without permission. During school hours, a student will not be allowed to leave campus with another student in his vehicle unless both parents have called the office.

SPORTS PROGRAM

A student in the 5th – 12th grade may be eligible to play on a sports team if he maintains passing grades. All participants must pay a one-time sports fee each year and must have a physical examination by a licensed physician. (The Athletic Director sets the fees.) Paying the sports fees does not mean a student will participate in all of the games. A student practicing for sports before, during, or after school must dress according to the following guidelines: A student may practice in clothes similar to the P.E. uniform described on page 24. A student may not practice in sleeveless shirts, cut off shorts, torn, patched, ragged, or see-through shirts or shorts. All shirts must cover the mid-section whether sitting, standing, stretching, or bending. All shorts must cover the knees. All girls’ clothing must be loose fitting. A student may wear the approved game uniform for practice if instructed to do so by the coach. When a church/school vehicle is being used for transportation to away games, the coach will tell students to wear either their school uniform or their assigned sports uniform. Students may not wear street clothes on the church/school vehicle.

DRESS CODE REGULATIONS – ALL STUDENTS

It is our desire at B.S.C.A. to do all things pleasing to the Lord and in a manner which will honor Him. We recognize that true Christianity is a matter of the heart and not always the outward appearance; however, our appearance is very important. By our dress we represent the feeling and thought of our heart. Therefore, our appearance should represent our desire to please God and honor Him.

Uniforms are required at Balch Springs Christian Academy. Check with the school office for the name of the uniform retailer. A student whose appearance in any way violates the dress code will be given a dress code violation. A parent/guardian will be called to pick up the student or to bring the appropriate clothing. The student may not return to school/class until he meets the dress code. He will be counted absent unexcused for any classes or days of school he misses. The student will not be allowed to do make-up work and will receive zeroes for all missed work. If a parent/guardian refuses to pick up a student who is in violation of the dress code, the parent must withdraw the student. Students may not rent, borrow, or buy any dress code items from the school office, such as belts, ties, socks, hosiery, or shaving items. The following guidelines are to be followed by all students in grades Pre-K – 12th in the interest of good grooming, Christian modesty, and good Christian educational practices. Unkempt uniforms: Uniforms must be maintained in good condition; therefore unkempt uniforms which are tattered, ripped or threadbare, faded, un-hemmed or un-seamed (“cut”), stained/soiled, or wrinkled will not be permitted. If a student wears an unkempt uniform, he will receive a dress code violation, and a parent/guardian will be called to bring another uniform. Undershirts: An all-white tee-shirt, turtle neck, or mock-turtle neck shirt, (short sleeved or long-sleeved) may be worn tucked in under the uniform shirt. No other shirt may be worn under the uniform. If a student wears a prohibited undershirt, he will receive a dress code violation, and he will have to remove the undershirt. Outerwear: A B.S.C.A. approved school jacket or a solid navy sweater or pullover embroidered with the B.S.C.A. logo may be worn as part of the school uniform. All other garments worn to and from school need to be removed and locked in a locker during school hours. A student in Pre-K – 6th grade may leave his coat in the homeroom class and wear it in cold weather during recess. Remain in uniform: A student must be in his uniform meeting all dress code regulations when he arrives on campus. The student must remain in his uniform during school hours and while he is waiting to be picked up after school. Exceptions: A student who is in a scheduled P.E. class or sports practice may wear the approved clothes for that activity.

DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES

B.S.C.A. IS NOT A CORRECTIVE INSTITUTION.

A student should not be enrolled with the idea that he will be reformed. B.S.C.A. was established to work with the home, but not to take the place of parents who have had difficulty with their children. Attendance at B.S.C.A. is a privilege, not a right. At B.S.C.A., discipline is maintained which is firm, consistent, fair, and tempered with love. The faculty/staff maintain standards of behavior in the classroom through love, kindness, and a genuine regard for the students. However, when disciplinary action becomes necessary, it is firmly carried out, tempered by good judgment and understanding. The student must conduct himself at all times in a manner becoming a Christian. GRIPING IS NOT TOLERATED! Recommendation to parent/guardian: If a student does come home complaining about a policy or disciplinary procedure, a parent/guardian should follow these guidelines: 1) The parent/guardian should give the staff the benefit of the doubt. 2) The parent/guardian should consult the Handbook. 3) The parent/guardian should realize that a student’s reporting is emotionally biased and may not include all of the facts. 4) The parent/guardian should realize that the school has reasons for all rules, and the rules are enforced without hesitation. 5) The parent/guardian should first support the teacher and administration, and then call the school for additional facts. 6) The parent/guardian should not discuss the action in question in the presence of the student. A student’s future attitude toward authority will be determined by a parent’s attitude toward the faculty/staff. If necessary, the parent/guardian should call the office and ask that the teacher return the call.

7) The parent/guardian should talk with the teacher when the student is not present. If preferred, the parent/guardian may send a short note signed by the parent/guardian in a sealed envelope. B. S. C. A. faculty/staff cannot act on unsigned communications. 8) The parent/guardian should not come to school without an appointment in an attempt to have a discussion with a faculty/staff member.

DISCIPLINE PENALTIES

When a student’s behavior violates the guidelines set forth in this Handbook, he will receive a detention, suspension, or expulsion as explained in this section. A “Disciplinary Referral Form” will be filled out by the faculty/staff member witnessing the violation. The student and the form will be sent to the administrator’s/principal’s office. This form will be signed by the teacher, the student, the administrator/principal who processes the form, and the parent. If a student refuses to sign the form, he will be given a one day suspension in addition to his violation penalty.

If a parent/guardian refuses to pick up a student who is being suspended, the student will be expelled.

DETENTION GUIDELINES

A student will serve a detention with the teacher who writes the Disciplinary Referral within five school days of the violation, or he will be assigned a double detention (a 30 minute detention becomes 60 minutes, etc.). A student will receive a one day suspension if he does not serve the double detention within 10 school days of the original violation. While in detention, a student will be assigned to do school work, write essays/sentences, or perform physical work such as cleaning. While in detention, a student who disturbs in any way or refuses to do the assigned work will be dismissed, the detention will be rescheduled, and an additional thirty minutes will be added. If a student receives a detention within the last seven days of school, the student must serve that detention on the last teacher-in-service day before the school year ends. A student will not receive his final grades until all detentions are served.

SUSPENSION GUIDELINES

B. S. C. A. does not have in-school suspensions.

When a student is suspended, he will be suspended from the time of the violation until the end of the school day in addition to the one/two day suspension described in the penalties section of this Handbook.

A student given a suspension will not be allowed to make up any work assigned on the day(s) of suspension. The student will receive a zero for all quizzes, tests, or other work missed on the day(s) of suspension. On the day(s) of suspension, the student will not be allowed to participate in graduation or any other activities scheduled for that day. A parent/guardian and the student must meet with the administration before the student returns to school. This meeting may be held at the time of the violation, on the day of suspension, or before school on the day that the student is to return to school. A student receiving two suspensions for any reason in the school year shall be subject to appear before at least one member of the Board of Trustees in order to be allowed to return to B.S.C.A.

APPEALING A SUSPENSION

If he feels a suspension is unwarranted, a parent/guardian may petition the Board of Trustees within seven days of the date of the suspension. After seven days from the date of suspension, the suspension will stand with no recourse. The trustees will hold a hearing which may include the parent, student, teacher, or administrator involved in the suspension. The judgment of the trustees will be either to uphold the suspension or to overrule the suspension. If the suspension is overruled, the student may make up his work. If the suspension is upheld, the student will receive the suspension and/or expulsion. The trustees’ and the pastor’s decision is final. The Board of Trustees meets on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. by appointment only. Failure to attend a requested board meeting will result in the loss of right to a session.

EXPULSION GUIDELINES

THREE STRIKE RULE: A student who receives three suspensions in one school year will be expelled with no recourse. The three suspensions can be for three different offenses, not just for the same offense three times.

BENAIAH MEDALLION

Bob Jones University Greenville, South Carolina Citation Benaiah, David’s faithful companion, exemplified the Christian loyalty that makes the ideal follower-leader. He eagerly anticipated David’s desires and upheld his leader’s hands. He was loyal to David without regard for personal cost. “During this past year I have endeavored, with God’s help, to lead our class in a way that pleases God. Now I challenge you to lead with loyalty. “Be loyal to the administration. Support them enthusiastically, anticipating their desires, understanding their goals, and implementing their requests. Encourage them in their God-given responsibilities to the parents and to the young people of Balch Springs Christian Academy.

“Be loyal to Christ. Live in such a way that you properly represent your Savior and Lord. Show a pure, powerful testimony of the changed heart and life that comes only from knowing Him. Be loyal to Scripture. Stand without apology for the truth God has given. Study to show yourself approved unto God. Know His Word; follow His will; ignore all voices that would draw you away from simple obedience.” These are the marks of a Christian leader. And these are the qualities our school needs from you, the leader of next year’s Senior Class.
