Rev. Mark Lewis

Pastor

O Mary, We Crown Thee With Blossoms...

What a blessing to participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass each day! Every morning, Our Lord speaks to us of His unconditional love for us, and we have the opportunity to pray and reflect, to give thanks for our blessings, and to ask for guidance in the day ahead. In ad-dition, discovering what God is saying to us in Scripture is another facet of our dai-ly Mass devotions. This “perfect prayer” is an integral part of our school culture at The Atonement Academy!

Each year, early in the month of May, our school children bring their flower gift of-ferings to the “Lady Chapel.” This beautiful tradition takes place in most Catholic schools all over the world during the month of May, for generations designated as the month of Mary, Our Blessed Mother.

Our PSIA State Qualifiers — We are proud of you!

Dear Atonement Family— After Danny became unconscious and unresponsive back at the beginning of April, his oncologist treated him with a high dose of a steroid. The steroid worked to reduce the swelling and inflam-mation in his brain, and, over the course of about a week, brought him back to us. He woke up, responded, and started talking again. I think most people knew about that. Even though he was awake, he was in very bad shape. His oncologist and I agreed that we needed to try to treat his cancer, so we decided to start chemotherapy. The hope was that the chemo would lessen the cancer so the steroid dose could be tapered off. She said we would know if the chemo was having an effect if he did not get worse when the steroid dose was lowered. That is exactly what has happened. Danny has almost finished his second cycle of chemo, and he has improved a lot. He is still weak and tires very easily, but he is otherwise almost back to his normal self. Praise God! His steroid dose is now half what it was originally. We are now back to looking at clinical trials that he may be eligible for. I had all but given up hope of his being able to do a trial when he was so sick. He will have an MRI in the first week of June that will show whether the cancer is less. I will try to update again as soon as I know more. I can't thank everyone enough for all you as a community have done for Danny, and for our fami-ly. Your prayers have made a huge difference.

Recess in the piazza!

Oue second graders love to read! Just look at the titles some of these young students are reading! (Above)

Gabriela (above) & Sofia (right) design Mother’s Day cards.

Eighth graders try on robes for their promotion ceremony.

Teacher Appreciation Week saw treats brought in for the entire faculty and staff, too! Tasty breakfasts and lunches were topped off by a mobile snow cone truck and a beautiful “yard sign” display! We appreci-ate the outpouring of warmth and caring — we are indeed loved!

Bulletin Board

Need A Driver! With my work situation, I hire someone to pick up and take my sons Roman & Ryan to school Tuesday – Friday mornings. For this service, I currently pay $50/week or $200/month. I currently have a college student that does this for me but her schedule will be changing for the fall and she will no longer be able to assist...I was wondering if there were any high school students or families in the neighborhood that would be interested in this offer. I’m good for the rest of this school year but definitely would need help when school starts in the fall. If you are inter-ested in discussing this with me, contact me at Bob-bie B. Peña, Phone 210-345-4824 or email [email protected]

SUMMER JOBS FOR UPPER SCHOOL! Our school shoe supplier, SCHOOL SHOES UNLIMITED has opening! During the summer, they employ stu-dents from schools like ours to give them an opportunity to earn some money for the summer. It’s just part time work, and they pay minimum wage and train their employees how to fit and do shoe business the way it was meant to be done. Their owner, Sam Hernandez adds, “In twenty five years we have had so many of our former employees go on to get their degrees and some their masters. So we are a very good place for students first employment, Some students have worked with us as long as six years working their through college, and some still keep in touch.” Contact Mr. Hernandez at [email protected] or Carlos Lugo, [email protected] — and their phone number is 210-734-9003.
