New Itineraries for 2014

Are we really entering a‘New Age’ of Cruising...

2014 is a very exciting year… not just because the new look Cruisin’ Magazine is out, but because there is a whole host of new itineraries and ports of call available from almost all of your favourite cruise lines!

Perhaps the most exciting development for AmaWaterways in 2014 is the introduction of their Burma itineraries, joining Myanmar specialists Pandaw, among others, in offering river cruises along the famous Irrawaddy River.

Cuba, meanwhile, has been added to Star Clippers’ itinerary list and they will be sailing there for the first time in February 2014 (see page 19 for details).

New from Avalon Waterways is ‘From the Inca Empire to the Peruvian Amazon’, 12 day cruise – just one of the fascinating cruises added to the books by river cruise operators, who are delighting customers with the growing popularity of river cruising

(see page 30).

Themed cruises are also in abundance throughout 2014 with D-Day Landings nostalgia cruises, the 100th anniversary of the Panama Canal and the likes of Celebrity’s new Immersive Wine Cruise. Fred. Olsen are even introducing their first ever ‘Mystery

Longer duration ‘World’ cruises have also been given a revamp with Fred. Olsen’s 119 night Grand Voyage lasting seven days longer than its 2013 ‘World Cruise’, yet visiting 19 more ports.

Finally, the World’s largest cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas, will be coming to the UK and Europe for the first time, sailing from Barcelona and offering three new sailings…

*according to research by the Passenger Shipping Association

There is no doubt that times have changed and that cruising is no longer purely the domain of the ‘ultra rich’ or retired. More and more cruise lines are now catering specifically for young families, there is a plethora of new and exciting ‘adventure cruises’ for under 65s or the ‘young at heart’ to enjoy and an abundance of youthful onboard activities such as rock climbing and surfing on offer.

However, the fact remains that 64% of cruisers are 55+ and 37% are 65+, with the average age aboard a world cruise reaching 69*. So this made us think, is the current fixation on targeting the elusive ‘youth’ market really the way to go for cruise operators? Is it possible that the cruise industry itself is in danger of becoming ageist, and that changes to services, marketing gimmicks or cut

price deals to entice the ‘youngsters’ could actually alienate loyal cruisers?

It’s worth remembering that the over 55s of today bear no resemblance at all to the conventional images of ‘old age’ so this approach is probably not even necessary. It’s entirely acceptable for ‘traditional cruisers’ to indulge in almost all of the activities offered onboard modern cruise ships nowadays!

The rapid expansion of the industry and the huge selection of cruises now on the market mean that there is more than enough variety to satisfy all ages, with no need to shift focus from one age group to another. The new ‘age’ of cruising is less about actual age and more about a new era of cruising that is accessible to all.

Cruise’ on board Black Watch in November!

Page 4: Cruisin' Magazine | Fred. Olsen Travel

The chance to experience this enchanting and unspoiled place, nestled between India and Thailand, has become irresistible and now has never been a better time to explore it. Political tensions are easing, development is still in its early stages and its temples and pagodas have yet to be engulfed by tourists.

The profound Buddhist influence on Burma is plain to see - it is a place where 2000+ year old traditions are still practised today with grace and humility; where its gentle-spirited residents are eager to showcase all that their once forgotten land has to offer and are welcoming visitors with open arms…

BaganThe ancient city of Bagan is home to more than 2,200 sacred structures stretched across its broad plains. Often cited as Burma’s version of Angkor Wat, Bagan is a magnificent cultural treasure trove of temples which loom mysteriously over its spectacular landscape.

MandalayWidely regarded as the cultural heart of Burma, the “Golden City” of Mandalay is renowned for its master craftsmen, traditional arts, dance and drama. Mandalay’s riverside location was based on a Buddhist prophecy that said a great metropolis would one day be built at the foot of Mandalay Hill.

Mount. PopaThe stunningly beautiful shrine perched at the top of volcanic Mt. Popa, is considered the legendary home of nats, spirit gods worshipped by Burmese Buddhists. The 360° views from the summit are truly remarkable, and well worth the effort it takes to get there.

4 Cruisin’ Magazine

Royal CitiesFour ancient royal cities lie a short distance from Mandalay, each possessing its own charm, character and noteworthy sights. Inwa (Ava) was the capital of the Burmese kingdom for more than 400 years. Amarapura has the world’s longest teak bridge, Sagaing is famous for its monasteries and tranquil atmosphere, while Mingun has a number of historic sites to explore, including the “unfinished pagoda”.

YangonMyanmar’s many years of isolation have allowed Yangon (Rangoon) to preserve a very strong and unique cultural identity. Known as the “Garden City of the East,” it retains much of its colonial-era charm with cobblestone streets, tree-lined avenues and Victorian architecture.

Myanmar’s Colourful Cities and Landmarks…

Myanmar (Burma) has long evoked images of the mysterious and exotic in the minds of all who imagine it. Rich and timeless, its sacred spaces, colourful markets and serene landscapes have become increasingly recognisable over the last few years, which have seen sweeping changes to this captivating Asian country.

Colourful Cuisine…

Burmese food is an exotic fusion comprising of delightful local delicacies as well as Indian, Chinese and Thai influences. Rice is a key part of any meal and is usually accompanied by soup, seafood or meat, fresh fruits and vegetables and a wide variety of condiments. Expect mouth-watering grilled fish, delectable salads, savoury noodles and flatbreads, and spicy curries.

The Road to Mandalay…

The Irrawaddy, or Ayeyarwady River is celebrated in legend, song and literature, most notably by Rudyard Kipling in his well-known poem, ‘The Road to Mandalay’. As Burma’s lifeline, the river is witness to its long and turbulent past, sweeping from the snow-capped Himalayas in the far north and down the full length of the country to the Andaman Sea.

Along its banks, thousands of temples, stupas and pagodas can still be seen, making the Irrawaddy the perfect way to see this enchanting country up close and personal.

See page 12 for information on Irrawaddy River Cruises with AmaWaterways. Their Golden Treasures of Myanmar and Hidden Wonders of Myanmar itineraries feature all the classic sights, including former royal capitals, majestic statues and shrines, and ancient monasteries.

Discovera different worldwith P&O Cruises

Throw open the curtains one morning and you might be greeted by the glistening Norwegian Fjords. Open them another and it could be Hong Kong harbour, the walled city of Dubrovnik or the sun rising over Venice. Imagine taking breakfast on your balcony with these iconic sights as your backdrop. Could there be any better way to start your day?

P&O Cruises are offering some fantastic new itineraries in 2014, starting with the Ventura offering her first ever season of Med fly cruises! She will sail from Rome, Venice and Barcelona, offering a selection of eastern, western and central Mediterranean cruises, including the 7 night “Italy, Greece & France” sailing throughout 2014…

Starting in Venice, breathe in the romance and Italian exuberance of this spellbinding city. Explore its mysterious and watery streets, take a gondola ride to truly appreciate the atmosphere and architecture of the city. Sip a cappuccino in St. Mark’s Square or ride across the lagoon to the islands of Murano and Burano. From the Gothic arches of the Doges Palace to the intricate façade of St. Marks Cathedral, a day in Venice is bound to enchant you.

Moving on to Corfu, a beguiling island of wildflowers, cypress groves and herb scented mountains, discover the shallow waters of the Aegean Sea as it laps long stretches of golden sand. In Corfu Town, wander the narrow alleyways of the Venetian old town, explore the two fortresses and gasp in awe at the stunning views. Take a ferry across to the islet known as Mouse Island, which according to legend, is actually a ship turned to stone!

Legendary fountains, piazzas, ancient architecture and cathedrals await your discovery in Italy’s capital, Rome. Gaze up at the horizon and you’ll no doubt see St Peters Basilica; visible from nearly everywhere in the city, it is built on the site where St Peter was martyred and buried. Witness the beautiful paintings of Michelangelo at the magnificent Sistine Chapel. And no visit to Rome would be complete without a visit to its imposing amphitheatre, the Colosseum.

And on the beautiful island of Corsica, towns don’t come much prettier than Ajaccio, Napoleon’s birthplace, where the warmth of Italian Dolce Vita and the style and cuisine of France combine to create an atmosphere that’s quite unique…

Family Friendly P&O CruisesOn family friendly cruises, you may also receive generous reductions on children’s fares if they share your cabin, or in some cases children’s places are free*! There are dedicated clubs for all ages, night nursery, children’s tea, discos and activities are all included in your fare!

I’ll get seasickEven if you get sick on a plane or in the car, it’s rarer to get sick on today’s cruise ships due to their size and stabilisers. And even if you do succumb, there are plenty of over the counter remedies to help you out.

Cruises are just for old peopleYes it is true that many cruisers are of retirement age, but most of them are very active and have some fantastic stories to tell. The sailing ships and those that offer water sports often appeal to a slightly younger clientele while the longer duration cruises will more than likely appeal to the older generation.

Cruises are boring as they spend all their time at seaIt’s almost IMPOSSIBLE to get bored with cruising. You can be as active (or inactive) as you like. Enjoy Las Vegas style entertainment or a workout in the gym, go for a swim or enjoy a quiet moment with a book – it’s up to you. What’s more, many ships spend all day in port so you can explore your destination to your heart’s content.

8 Cruisin’ Magazine

New to Cruising?

Cruises are all-inclusiveIn fact, most cruises are NOT all-inclusive. The basic fare still includes room, board, entertainment and access to swimming pools for example, but with some cruise lines you will pay for ‘extras’ such as wine and bottled water.

Cruises are no good for ‘independent’ travellersGood news – if you prefer to go ashore and explore by yourself, you can! You don’t have to take a group excursion if you don’t want to. Many smaller ships now visit unique and off the beaten track destinations so that you can indulge your more adventurous side too!

Onboard dinners are really formal and I’ll have to sit in the same place every nightThese days, there are so many options when it comes to dining. Most of the larger lines offer more flexible and informal dining options than they used to, with open-seating policies and ‘freestyle’ dining concepts becoming increasingly popular amongst a wide variety of cruise lines.

Whether you have yet to discover the World by sea or have only recently dipped your toe into the water, there’s no doubt that the prospect of cruising can be daunting if you don’t know the ropes. We attempt to dispel some of the myths surrounding cruise holidays and give you our top tips for choosing the right cruise for you. And who knows, even if you’re a seasoned cruiser – you may learn something new!

Cruising MythsCruises are too longModern cruises vary significantly in length and you can now choose from a mini break to Europe, a seven night cruise around the Med or 21 night Caribbean cruise, right up to an epic 100+ night voyage around the world!

Cruises are too expensiveOh really? Staying in a classy resort, right on the ocean with all meals and entertainment included in the price, coupled with the opportunity to explore exciting corners of the World – where could you find better value than that!?

Cruising isn’t right for familiesMany operators, including Disney Cruise Line, cater extremely well for children and often have a dedicated kids team to keep them busy, making cruising an idea holiday for families. See our feature on page 10.

Cruising is becoming increasingly popular amongst families with more and more ‘multi-generational’ trips taking place year after year. Many of the latest and greatest cruise ships are specifically geared towards families, with facilities for children and teens, including waterslides, rock-climbing walls, kid’s clubs and teen-lounges, as well as all the usual activities for keeping parents and grandparents entertained at all times!

So why is family cruising so popular? Well, for starters, it is fantastic value for money! All your accommodation, meals and entertainment activities are included, and you get to visit a number of different destinations without checking in and out of hotels… a bonus when travelling with excitable children and their luggage!

Before choosing your family-friendly cruise line, it’s important to think about what kind of activities you and your children are most interested in and which itineraries will appeal the most. Be sure to include your children in the planning stages of the trip, to get them engaged and excited from the outset.

Remember to check the minimum age requirement for your chosen cruise line, some won’t allow children younger than

six months old on board, whereas others are more flexible. Depending on the age of your children, decide whether you want to book a family stateroom or adjoining cabins.

Top tips for getting the most from a family cruise:

Ask for your children’s input upfront – involve them in the planning process and talk about which destinations excite them the most.

Look out for age-appropriate onboard programmes.

Give older children some independence – cruise ships are a safe, controlled environment so why not let them go for pizza at an onboard restaurant with new found friends?

Don’t forget ‘family time’ – take advantage of the activities that can involve the whole family.

Sign up for shore excursions and inject some variety into your cruise – excursions can be fun and educational for children too.

As the fastest growing cruise line in the luxury sector in the UK, Oceania is first choice for the discerning, sophisticated traveller in search of an enriching, destination-oriented experience aboard a luxurious home from home.

Having just celebrated an amazing year as winner of best cruise line, best service, best dining, best accommodations and best value for money in the mid-size sector at the Cruise Critic awards, Oceania has lots look forward to in 2014!

Implementing the largest refurbishment programme in the company’s history in early 2014, all three of its R-Class ships, Regatta, Insignia and Nautica, will be undergoing significant transformations with $55 million in upgrades and refurbishments.

Tall ship cruise specialist Star Clippers, has announced new ports, new destinations and new itineraries for 2014 on board the line’s three head-turning sailing ships, Star Clipper, Star Flyer and Royal Clipper, including a maiden season in Cuba, a sailing taking in the Monaco Grand Prix, new sailings from Mallorca and new port calls in Porto, Formentera and Corsica.

In February 2014, Star Flyer will operate a maiden season in Cuba, offering a series of seven-night itineraries out of the historic southern port of Cienfuegos, calling at some of Cuba’s most beautiful beaches and anchorages, as well as the Cayman Islands. From November 2014, the ship will return to Cuba offering cruises from five to seven nights. There will be options to extend each cruise in Havana, the island’s capital.

This exciting new season commences with a 14-night repositioning voyage from Balboa, Panama, to Cuba – a unique opportunity to enjoy a Panama Canal transit, two calls in Colombia and a visit to the Cayman Islands.

In May 2014, Grand Prix fans will be able to soak up the atmosphere of

Tall Ship Cruising… the most prestigious race of the F1 season in Monte Carlo, when guests on Star Flyer will be in pole position in the harbour. This one-off Monaco Grand Prix cruise is part of a series of voyages from Monaco and Cannes. The ship will spend the day of the Grand Prix in the harbour at glamorous Monte Carlo, near the heart of the action, before sailing to Corsica and ports along the French Riviera. Many of the Monaco and Cannes departures visit the Scandola Nature Reserve on Corsica, known for its dramatic rock formations and bird life, a new call for Star Clippers.

Summer 2014 sees Star Clippers sailing a season from Palma de Mallorca for the first time, while new ports of call for the Mediterranean season include Porto and the Scandolo Nature Reserve in Corsica, and La Sabina in Formentera.

Star Flyer will operate a series of seven-night voyages from the yachting paradise of Palma de Mallorca, cruising the Balearic islands (a favourite sailing spot of the King of Spain) and calling at anchorages only accessible to small ships, including the sleepy but beautiful islands of Formentera and

lively Puerto Pollença on Mallorca.Another brand new itinerary has been introduced for the 2014-15 Caribbean season; Royal Clipper will operate a completely new cruise in March 2015, spending a leisurely two weeks sailing the southern Caribbean and skimming the coast of South America on a one-off voyage to Venezuela and the Dutch Caribbean.

Royal Clipper will spend winter 2014/15 operating her usual enticing Windward Isles and Grenadines itineraries out of Barbados but a new, exciting cruise has been added, circling the entire southern Caribbean. Departing Barbados, the 14-night voyage calls at four ports in Venezuela (the coast of which is scattered with beautiful, unspoiled islands); the ‘ABC’ islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao in the Dutch Caribbean; and the Grenadines and St Lucia.

In addition to new destinations and routes, there is more variation in length of cruise than ever before, from a three-night taster from Venice in September to a 21-night transatlantic crossing on Royal Clipper from Barbados to Rome!

About Star Clippers

Star Clippers operates three of the world’s largest and tallest sailing vessels. Visiting ports often untouched by larger cruise ships and offering passengers the activities, amenities and atmosphere of a private yacht, Star Clippers is recognised

as one of the premier speciality cruise lines.

Passengers can enjoy the romance of sailing on board a true tall ship in a relaxed atmosphere with high standards of service provided by an attentive crew. All three ships have expansive teak decks, swimming pools, informal dining, a convivial Tropical Bar on deck and a comfortable piano bar and are large enough to offer first class accommodation and dining, but small enough to call into intimate ports,

When imagining ‘premium’ cruising, certain things come to mind; spacious and comfortable ships, award winning service, five star dining, extensive activities & enrichment programmes, and compelling worldwide itineraries. With premium cruising, getting what you pay for has always been more important than discount pricing or promises of ‘5 Star luxury for less’.

Appealing to the more discerning traveller, premium cruise lines can still offer the same type of itineraries as mainstream cruise lines, yet have the added bonus of more onboard amenities and activities, as well as enrichment programmes that range from cooking demonstrations, talks, wine tasting or even photography workshops.

Premium cruises cater for more discerning travellers and while many do include excellent facilities for children aged 2 plus you won’t find climbing walls and waterslides. Those that do cater for families include Holland America Line, with its Club HAL programme for children - which includes cookery lessons and a teen club, and Celebrity Cruises which has

Adventure Cruising

A million miles away from the blue skies, open seas and sandy beaches associated with more ‘traditional’ cruising, adventure cruising is growing in popularity amongst those looking for something a bit different. More and more niche cruise lines are specialising in unique and exciting destinations such as Alaska, the Arctic or even Antarctica…

Exploring Alaska’s vast interior on a cruise tour to Denali or putting your feet up and enjoying an unforgettable ride on the world famous Alaska railroad, are just two examples of the kind of experiences adventure cruising can offer. Sailing through Alaska’s Inside Passage, you will most certainly be in awe of its giant

glaciers and ice chunks as you cruise close beside them.

Heading upwards and crossing the Arctic Circle, there are natural wonders such as the Aurora Borealis to witness as you await the return of the Midnight Sun in May. In Norway, visit the Trollfjord with your fellow

Spending its entirety within the Arctic Circle, this voyage provides the best opportunity to see the Northern Lights and explore areas of this frozen land, that are seldom seen by tourists.

With a choice of direct flights from London Gatwick, Manchester, Bristol, Bournemouth, Belfast or Glasgow to Tromsø it is even easier to access the wonders of Northern Norway and go in search of the elusive Northern Lights…

Day 1 – Tromsø, the Gateway to the ArcticFly from the UK to Tromsø before boarding the ship and departing later that afternoon.

Day 2 – Honningsvåg and the North CapeFollowing the scenic sailing through Magerøysund and after an early stop in Hammerfest, you arrive Honningsvåg - the gateway to the wonders of the spectacular North Cape*. This evening, you pass the sacred cliffs of Finnkirka, now the sight of an impressive light show.

Day 3 – Kirkenes, the voyage turning pointThe last port on the Voyage north is Kirkenes. The terrain, culture and geography of Kirkenes offer the opportunity to take part in some fabulous optional Arctic Excursions.

Day 4 – Hammerfest and TromsøThe first major stop of the day is Hammerfest. Here, enjoy an optional excursion including a visit to Hammerfest’s UNESCO World Heritage site, the Meridian Column, commemorating Struve’s historical measurement of the globe. From here, your next major stop will be Tromsø where you will transfer to your hotel.

Day 5 - TromsøAfter breakfast, a choice of optional winter excursions is available before you are transferred to Tromsø airport for your direct flight back to the UK.

For the 6 days extended itinerary, spend an extra day at the hotel in Tromsø.

adventurers and gasp at the powerful waterfalls bursting from here and from Norway’s other famous Fjords.

If it’s wild and untamed wilderness you are seeking, Winter is the best time to explore these magical corners of the world, when the air is fresh and crisp and the wildlife is still surprisingly

abundant. When the weather turns warmer and the snow and ice melt away, a whole new landscape is revealed – perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking. With ‘freestyle’ cruising also gaining in popularity, many of the formal rules of cruising have been thrown overboard. Relaxed dress codes and dining rules,

which enable you to eat what you like when you like, certainly appeals to the more informal cruiser with an adventurous spirit who truly loves to ‘live in the moment’.

NEW for 2014!

Fred. Olsen has now added cruises from Bristol (Avonmouth) and Tilbury to its 2014 cruise programme, giving passengers a choice of 10 regional departures around the UK!

Its most ambitious ‘Grand Voyage’ ever will also depart in 2014, with an 119 night ‘Exploring the Far East’ sailing on Balmoral, - seven days longer than its 2013 ‘World Cruise’, yet visiting 19 more ports.

2014 also welcomes the new Inspirational Experiences, such as ‘Film Stars & Fast Cars’ and ‘Northern Lights’; a new Triple-City Cruise Break, which allows guests to truly discover destinations with overnight stays in each city - a far more cost-effective option than flying and taking a hotel to each one - and new Introductory Cruises - a series of two-night cruises.

*Enjoyment Promise: The Enjoyment Promise is only applicable to guests who have not cruised on a Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines (“FOCL”) ship before and for those booked on Freedom/Brochure Fares. It excludes cruises of 6 nights or less and cruises with a duration greater than 36 nights. Only applies to bookings made before 28th February 2014, for departures more than 14 weeks ahead. You will need to inform Guest Relations within 48 hours of embarkation that you wish to leave the ship based on the Enjoyment Promise. FOCL will arrange and pay for a scheduled flight and transport back to the UK, as soon as practical and reasonable, subject to the vessel’s itinerary, with baggage allowance of 20kg. This promise is for first time guests in the unlikely event that they are not enjoying the cruise and wish to return to the UK. If you do not return to the UK on the flight organised by FOCL and/or do not inform Guest Relations within 48 hours of embarkation, then we reserve the right not to refund you the cost of the cruise. Your return flight may be to any UK airport. FOCL is not responsible for any further onward costs to your home or originating port. Those unwilling or unable to fly will not receive any refund and FOCL is not liable to find alternative transport. The Enjoyment Promise only applies to guests who are contracted with FOCL and excludes bookings with 3rd party operators. FOCL will refund the cruise cost only (and flight costs if booked via FOCL only), but will not refund other costs including but not limited to transfers, insurance, car parking, on board expenditure and any other costs related to your holiday. Enjoyment Promise and 10% discount available on brochure and Freedom Fares only. Singles offer: These Solo Cruising terms and conditions are in addition to Fred. Olsen’s standard Terms and Conditions and apply to all bookings. Fred. Olsen’s full set of Terms and Conditions are available on request and we advise all passengers to review these before booking. Solo offers are not combinable with any other offer (except the Enjoyment Promise if applicable) and only apply to specific cruises and selected cabin grades. Subject to availability and can be withdrawn or amended at any time without prior notice. Offers end 28th February 2014.

Contrary to what many people may think, the Oceans don’t have the monopoly on cruising! River cruising is the fastest-growing area of the UK cruise market and with all of the benefits it brings; it’s really not difficult to see why!On a river cruise you get to travel right through the heart of a country, taking in the smaller towns and villages as well as the larger capital cities of some of the world’s most fascinating countries. This quick and easy access into ports that are often unreachable by ocean cruise ships, means that you have plenty of time to explore as you don’t have far to go to reach the heart of the action.

River cruising also gives you a unique insight into different countries and cultures across the world as you cruise past the riverbanks. What’s more, thanks to the careful design of river cruise ships, you can enjoy stunning panoramic river views from all points of the ship, so that you don’t miss out on any of the beautiful scenery on show.

With many river cruise lines available, a wide variety of different ships and so many exciting destinations to visit, there is something for everyone when it comes to river cruising. Here is some food for thought if you are considering setting sail on freshwater…

European rivers are still the most popular, but the old favourite, the Nile, is perfect for experiencing Ancient Egypt.

Growing in popularity is the mighty Mekong River, flowing through Cambodia and Vietnam, visiting far flung places often only accessible by water.

The Yangtze is an excellent way to see a large part of China in a short time.

The Russian waterways link the two great cities of Moscow and St Petersburg, offering a fascinating insight into Russia’s history.

If you are feeling really adventurous, why not travel to South America for an Amazon voyage?

Or why not journey to the heart and soul of America along the wonderful Mississippi.

An unforgettable journey through time and culture…

Every element of a Riviera river cruise is painstakingly planned and researched with all excursions, sightseeing tours, transfers and travel options included.

For 2014, Riviera is operating 10 carefully crafted itineraries along the Rhine, Moselle, Main, Danube, Elbe, Rhone & the Seine, including…Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelburg 7 nights from just £999 per person

Amsterdam, Volendam & the Dutch Bulbfields 4 nights from just £819 per person

TULIP TIME

Top reasons why ‘river’ is so popular…Like ocean cruising, river cruising is very inclusive, with accommodation, food and entertainment all included in the price. Providing fantastic value for money, especially when compared to land-based holidays, river cruising still enables you to get to the heart of a destination the same way you would on a city break. The inclusivity of river cruising isn’t the only reason it’s become so popular however; here we look at some of the top reasons why this type of cruise holiday is on the rise…

No choppy seas – with no waves or currents to contend with, river cruising is the perfect choice for those worried about seasickness!

Daily Excursions – are often included in the price, with operators such as AmaWaterways even offering free bicycles for independent exploration.Exotic far flung destinations – are

being added to operator itineraries every month, with river cruising not just confined to Europe. Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and China are increasingly popular, with Myanmar set to follow suit.

A room with a view – is guaranteed on river ships, with all cabins being outside and most with large windows or French balconies, meaning that you will never miss the view!

Small and friendly – is the name of the game when it comes to river cruising. Most hold less than 200-250 passengers, making it easy to meet like-minded friends if you wish.

Fascinating talks and insights – are often given whilst your vessel sails by towns and cities, with onboard tour managers happy to answer any further questions you may have.

What’s included in river cruising?

While accommodation, food and entertainment are a given, river cruise companies can vary enormously in terms of ‘what else’ is included in the price. Many include flights or a

rail option as well as local transfers, while others charge a supplement. Unlimited wifi access is also something that more and more operators include free of charge, as well as free, guided shore excursions. All-inclusive drinks packages, again, are growing in popularity amongst luxury river cruise operators, while others will include wine or beer with meals and unlimited soft drinks.

If you would like to know what is included

with each operator, contact your cruise

specialist today.
