Carnival Spirit calls for all agesSeniors and young people

    without children are now the

    most wanted passengers on

Carnival Cruise Lines fun ship.ITS not just for kids.

Thats the message from Vicky Tomasino,

he sales whiz who has been dispatched down

under from Carnival Cruise Lines Miami

headquarters to drum up business in

    Australia.

    Carnival Spiritis very multi-generational,

heres something for everyone and plenty to

do that doesnt require having children,

    Tomasino told Cruise Weekly.

We are also a great option for 65 to 75 year

    olds, couples, honeymooners, girls getaways

    and family reunions.

According to Tomasino, the average age of

passengers on Carnival Spirit, which is

currently based in the United States, is 48.

Im trying to swing back that pendulum, to

show Australians that we have a lot to offer all

    ages, she said.

While bookings for school holiday and

Christmas cruises are very tight, other

itineraries on other dates are far from sold

    out.

When the kids are in school, Spiritis stillsailing year-round, Tomasino said.

In her new role as Senior Manager -

    Business Partnership, Tomasino is educating

local travel agents about the special features

and itineraries of the 2,680-passenger Spirit,

which will be permanently based in Sydney

    from October.

The most common query is what makes

Carnival Cruise Lines different to P&O.

As she tells the agents: The big difference is

that we are bringing the newest and largest

ship to be home-ported in Sydney it was

built in 2001 and has all the bells and whistles.Carnival Spiritis also very different to Royal

Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises, whose ships

are only passing through for a few months,

    she said.

Because we have committed to be in

Australia year-round until at least 2017, we

are able to change things to make the ship

more comfortable for Australians, such as

    installing Australian power points, using

Australian dollars as the onboard currency,

stocking local beers and wines, and improving

    the coffee.

Tomasino also reminded Victorians thatSpiritwould have a couple of departures

    from Melbourne in 2013.

Meanwhile, Tomasino will spend the next six

    months travelling around Australia, hosting

    consumer information events and training

    travel agents.

Im also speaking to senior citizen clubs to

tell them about our 16 bars and lounges, the

fine dining, the Broadway-style shows, the

comedy clubs and the adults-only Serenity

    deck, she said.

Its not just the Green Thunder [waterslide].

Have your say on cruisingCRUISE industry body, the International

Cruise Council Australasia, is calling on

Australian and New Zealand consumers to

participate in an online survey designed to gain

a better understanding of cruise passengers.

The survey does not take personal

information (and as such participants remain

anonymous) but asks participants to answer a

series of simple questions relating to

    demographics and trends.

Were hoping this information will give us a

greater insight into what people want from acruise holiday as well as general booking

habits, said ICCA GM Brett Jardine.

The information we gather will be very useful

to the local cruise industry as it continues to

grow so were encouraging interested cruise

    passengers to participate, he added.

Weve made it clear we see Asia in general,

    objective, said Fain.

We have been so pleased by the markets

Goldstein said the move was designed to

attract Chinese travellers as well as other

The opportunities to attract guests from

How long have you beenworking on cruise ships?I started working on cruiseships in 2005 when I joinedClassic International Cruisesand since then I have enjoyed

    three seasons in Australia.

What does your job entail?I oversee a staff of 22, whose job it is toentertain passengers. We keep passengershappy with sexy French cabaret shows, complete with feathers and sequins, as wellas lots of games and activities around the ship.

What is the best thing about your job?Its a busy job but a very enjoyable andrewarding one. On a smaller ship likeAthena, theres a genuinely friendlyatmosphere which helps passengers feel

part of theAthenafamily. And we all loveAustralian passengers because they areoutgoing and participate in lots of activities.

The worst thing about your job?Being away from my family in Europe and Ialso really miss my dog when Im at sea.

Strangest comment from a passenger? One male passenger was wondering if hecould organise a private cabaret dance showin his cabin and the answer was definitely no!

Can you describe life onboardAthena? As a smaller ship, with just 500 passengers,Athena has a very friendly and relaxedatmosphere onboard so we get to knowpassengers by their names and everyone, including the crew, feels they are homeaway from home. We aim to make all

    passengers feel special.

ONE hundred years and going strong.

    Port Review: Akaroa, NZ

    by: Louise Goldsbury

Radiance of the SeasAkaroas turquoise beauty Pohatu penguin colony

Since an earthquake damaged the Port of Christchurch, a lot of cruiseships have turned to Akaroa, 75 kilometres away.

The beautiful harbourside village has stepped up to this boost intourism, with local operators offering some of the best nature-basedactivities available in New Zealand.

Akaroa is home to the rare Hectors Dolphin (the worlds smallestdolphin) and the largest mainland colony of white-flippered littlepenguins, as well as an abundance of fur seals.

Day cruises, kayaking and sailing are great options to explore the bayswildlife, and there is also the opportunity to swim with the dolphinsthrough organised group trips.

One of the most memorable and unique tours takes people to see theadorable little penguins.

On my visit to the family-run Pohatu colony, we were allowed to (verycarefully) pick up an injured penguin and help him go for his daily swim.It was an experience Ill never forget.

Other tours take small groups in jeeps or minivans to see thecountryside along scenic, winding roads.

Akaroa sits in the flooded crater of a volcano, so the dramatic sceneryand harbour views from the hill/moutaintops are outstanding.

    French village

Those who choose not to book a shore excursion can enjoy wanderingaround Akaroas waterfront via a walkway that starts next to the wharfwhere cruise passengers arrive.

The town centre has several cafs, craft shops, boutiques and galleriesboasting well-preserved colonial architecture, as well as an old-fashioned general store.

Most noticeable is Akaroas French flavour, which is a reminder of the

first non-native visitors who arrived on a whaling ship in 1838.Its captain, Jean-Francois Langlois, purchased some land from the local

Maori, but by the time he sailed back to France and returned with peoplehoping to settle there, the country had been taken over by the British.

Many of the French settlers stayed, and today Akaroa is home to about600 permanent residents.

The streets have French names and are lined with historic woodencottages with picket fences, rose gardens and red, white and blue flags.

A museum spreads across three buildings, providing an insight into thetowns past, and an old lighthouse stands along the foreshore.

A self-guided audio tour is available from the visitors centre, which ishoused in the former post office building.

There is also a safe swimming beach, only a two-minute walk from thewharf.

Next seasonRoyal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Oceania and

Silversea are the main companies visiting Akaroa throughout theupcoming summer 2012-13 season.

Cruise ships anchor in the bay and passengers come ashore by tender. The ride takes about 5-10 minutes.

Local volunteers can be found at the end of the wharf with information

about the village and the surrounding areas, free maps, and suggestionsof things to see and do.

Tour operators also set up stalls to sell their last available spaces topassengers without plans.
