Problems with PerfectPass should be rare, given the few components that now make up the system. Most troubleshooting will simply involve voltage/continuity testingonthePerfectPassengineharness.

MasterCraft 2006 and 2007 PerfectPass

The PerfectPass Drive by Wire (DBW) system for new electronic throttle engines results in a simplified and enhanced version of PerfectPass. From the driver’s seat, PerfectPass operation is virtually identical to the present mechanical systems. PerfectPass is now comprised of just five main parts: 1.DBWMasterControlModule. 2. DBW Plug & Play Engine Wiring Harness 3. Plug & Play Display Harness 4. In-Dash Display 5.ALDLPlug

On 2007 MCX and RPT-1, an ALDL ground plug is required. On the 2006 6.0L and 8.1L, a re-flash of the ECMisrequired.

Test2006 Engines: Make sure the system is in ON Mode prior to starting thetest.YoumusthaveanRPMreadingonPerfectPassdisplay or it will never work properly. With the engine ON, lock the gearshift in neutral and advance the throttle handle to about 1700 RPM. When all is working correctly, an “S” will appear next to the “R” and the engine will hold at approxi-mately 1400 RPM. If the RPM is holding at 1400 but the “S” is not on the display, there is a problem with the STAT line. Pressing the UP key will change the output voltage by 0.1 volt as shown on the display and the RPM will increase by 140 RPM for each 0.1 volt increase. If the RPM does not hold at 1400 the RQST line may not be connected. Either the Request Line or the VGOV line has lost continuity. If the engine holds RPM at approximately 1400, but the “S” does not appear on the screen, then check the continuity of the Status line. If the test fails, perform volt-agechecks.

2007 Engines: Make sure the system is in the ON mode prior to start-ingthetest.YoumusthaveanRPMreadingonPerfect-Pass display or it will never work properly. With the engine ON, lock the gearshift in neutral and advance the throttle handle to 1800 RPM. When all is working correctly, and “S” will appear next to the “R” and the engine will hold at approximately 1730 RPM (it may surge up and down by about 100 RPM). Problems with PerfectPass Controlling/Not Controlling Open circuit (bad connection/broken wire) symp-toms of a DBW System.

Problem #1: RQST line open.PerfectPassnevertakescontrol in any mode. The engine is controlled only by the manualthrottlehandle.

Problem# 2: VGOV line open (RQST okay).WiththePerfectPass system control ON, the engine will not go above idle no matter how far the manual throttle is pushed. With PerfectPass control OFF, the engine is controlled as normal by manual throttle handle.

Problem #3: STAT line open (RQST line and VGOV line okay). Engine operates normally with Perfect-Pass control ON, the engine RPMs become limited at speed slightly above the system set point, but there is no proper control and speed remains one or two MPH above the set point. The PerfectPass does not beep to acknowledgeengagementandtheunderlinecharactersneverappear.

Problem #4: PerfectPass does not engage. The“S” (status line) never appears during the control test. Check ALDL ground plug. If it is not connected properly, the ECM will never give PerfectPass control. (Connects where Diacom plugs into the harness.)

is not on the display, there is a problem with the “STAT” line. If you lower the 1.0 volt setting by pressing the Down key to .7 volts, the engine RPM will drop to about 1420 and hold reasonably steady. (If you perform this test on the water on the fly, it should hold very steady at about 1730.) If the RPM does not hold at 1730, the RQST line may not be connected. Either the Request line or the VGOV line has lost continuity. If the engine holds RPM at approximately 1730, but the “S” does not appear on the screen, then check the continuity of the Status line.

Voltage Test (Control Test Mode) ThesemeasurementsaretakeninControlTestModewith the system ON and “R” must be on the screen. This test will confirm whether PerfectPass and the ECM are properly connected. Locatethe14-pinengineconnectoronthePerfect-Pass module or ideally the 9-pin MAT-N-LOKconnectoron the PerfectPass harness. You will need to apply test T connectors or insert small test pins beside the wires as the exit the connector in or der to be able to measure thevoltagepresentoneachwire.Thesearetakenwhilein Control Test, with “R” on the screen.

• Measure the voltage on the RQST (Request Line), which should measure less than 1 volt. (0 to 1 volt, engine running or not).

• Measure voltage on VGOV (VGOV Line), which should measure about 1 volt. (.8 to 1.2 volts, engine running or not).

• Measure voltage on STAT (Stat Line), which will be 10+ volts when “S” is not on display. (When engaged and working properly this pin at ECM is grounded and the voltage will be less than 1 volt. The engine must be running for any measurement on STAT line.)

• Press the OFF key and the “R” will disappear. Now measure voltage on RQST wire again, which should now measure more than 10 volts. This confirms the properoperationof thePerfectPassRequestdriverandECMconnection.

Other Measurements: With the control OFF and “R” not on the screen: RQST Line – 4.5V+ VGOV Line – 4 V+ STAT Line – 10 V+

Troubleshooting the Perfect-Pass Drive by Wire (DBW)Issue: System surges in all modes, including the control test.Action: Check forpoorgroundconnection for thePer-fectPassmaingroundwire.Performanopencircuitvolt-age test on VGOV, STAT and RQST lines, which may lead toanincorrectECMwirelocationoraharnessissue.

Issue:Customer indicates the system does not engage.Action: Perform a CONTROL TEST. If the system en-gages and holds properly during the control test, check the adjustable parameters (KDW, NN and Control Set-tings CS/CR). If it does not engage, perform the open circuit tests. Be sure there is an RPM reading on thescreen or PerfectPass will never operate properly.

Issue:No speed reading on PerfectPass Display.Action: If the boat speedometer is okay, check the pad-dlewheelsignalonthegreenwirecomingintothemastermoduleontheampsealconnector.Ifthepaddleisspunslowly, you should see 0 volts/12volts as the wheel slowly turns. As the wheel is spun quickly, you will see an average of 5 volts. (If voltage is good, perform a “System Reset.”) If the MasterCraft speedometer is not reading, that must be corrected. PerfectPass will likely read properly then.

Issue: No RPM reading on PerfectPass display.Action: TheRPMsignalwireattheampsealconnectorcoming into the master module. With the engine OFFyou should see about 9 volts. (With the engine running, you should see a normal tach pulse signal.) If there is no signal, check the pin at the ECM. The system will never control properly in any mode without an RPM signal.

Issue:PerfectPass in Wakeboard mode is set at 22 MPH and digital speedometer shows 22, but actual speed is 24.Action: Use the Menu key to highlight the menu ar-row icon and press Down key to reach “Speedometer Adjust.” Quickly press the key down several times and lower the speed by two MPH. All Wakeboard speeds are now calibrated.

Issue: The key is ON, but the PerfectPass screen does not become active and show data.Action: PerfectPass requires 12+ volts for start up.Check voltage on the red wire (12v) power source to the master module. If the backlight is ON, check the screen contrast. Check the screen contrast by pressing menu and Up keys together, then press Up key a couple of times.Thedatashouldreappear.

Issue: The button on the PerfectPass display does not work.Action: If the system was just installed, unplug the dis-play from the harness and inspect all the brass pins on

Issue: In Wakeboard/Trick mode, the system is slug-gish or exhibits some surging.Action:Inspectthepaddlewheel.Ifthepaddleappearsokay, go into the adjustable parameters by highlighting the menu arrow icon, press Up and Wakeboard will ap-pear.PressDownforsettings. KDW will appear. This value represents how firm the system will control. Heavily loaded boats may need higher settings. (Typical values 80-200.) Press Menu to proceed. NNW will appear. This is the filter factor of the paddle. The higher the value, the more filtering is done prior to making a speed change. (Typical values 80-180.)

Issue:The boat accelerates past the set speed too far in the Wakeboard mode before settling in.Action: Go to Control Settings and lower the “CS” value.

Control Settings CR/CS) These are engagement values that are adjustable to allow a customer to fine tune the engagement per-formance if necessary. This may be required due to a propeller change, unusual ballast loads, or operating at extremeelevations. These are found under “CTRL SETTNGS” in the sub-menu by pressing the Menu and Up keys together. CS–Controlstheengagementinthepaddlewheelspeed-based modes, including Wakeboard. If it is set too low, the system may not go fast enough to engage, or it will engage and then disengage. If it is set too high, it may overshoot the set speed by several MPH before beeping and taking over. The factory setting is 750. (The range is 735-900.) CR—ItisthesameastheCSexceptthatitcontrolstheengagement of the RPM based modes such as slalom. The factory setting is 1940. (The range is 1900-2100.) It would be rare to see the value require adjustment.

Software Adjustments System Reset—To rest the entire system back to the original factory values, press and hold ON/OFF and MENU keys together as you turn the key on to power PerfectPass.Continueholding fora fewsecondsuntil[System Reset ^ = Yes] appears. Then simply answer questions as they appear. Switching WakeboardPro <> DigitalPro—If your system was selected incorrectly, perform a system re-set. As you proceed through this process, you will be asked [Wakeboard Only ^ = YES]. Answer YES for WakeboardPro, and NO for DigitalPro. Engine Selection—On initial start-up or during asystem reset, PerfectPass will ask if you have a stan-dard 5.7L engine. This will appear as [5.7/MP ^ = YES]. This means press Up for 5.7 and Down for big block 6L or 8.lL. To confirm if the correct engine was selected, press the Menu and Up keys together to get back into the background screen and go to system settings. Fol-lowing the battery voltage, etc., you will see which en-gine was selected. If incorrect, perform a system reset. (An incorrectly selected engine can cause unsettled control in RPM mode only.) WakeboardPro/DigitalPro—Themastermoduleforboth system are identical. The only difference is in the way they were initialized, i.e., as a DigitalPro or Wake-boardPro. You can change the way it was set by per-forming a system reset.

ZeroOff

Introduction What is Zero Off? Zero Off, a speed control system for boats, uses GPS technology to control boat speed for recreational and tournament water sports such as slalom and jump water skiing, wakeboarding, and trick water skiing. Simply pick the desired boat speed, shove the throttle handle wide open, and let Zero Off take care of the rest. Zero Off uses true closed loop control of boat speed. This means that as long as the boat motor has enough power, the boat automatically tracks the desired speed without having to enter complicated setup information into the system. With Zero Off in control of the boat seed, all the driver has to focus on is maintaining his boat path. For slalom and jump skiing, Zero Off can control the boat speed with the same precision and similar feel as an expert hand driver. Zero Off responds to how the ski-er pulls on the boat, and adjusts accordingly to allow the skier to get free of the boat at the appropriate times as they pass through the course. Zero Off developers work closely with world-class sla-lom and jump skiers to ensure that the boat speed and course timing are controlled accurately and smoothly. Zero Off is developed to provide an outstanding “feel” of the pull and a pull that is in synch with the skier’s needs while skiing a course. The Zero Off faceplate has the following features:

Using the Faceplate Buttons Use the four buttons, SELECT, DOWN, UP, and ON/OFF MENU, to move around the screen and modify pa-rameters.

The button actions are:Tap – press and release the button in less than 1 second.Hold – press and hold the button approximately 2 seconds.

Displaying the Main Menu Bar Hold ON/OFF MENU button for approximately 2 sec-onds and the main menu bar is displayed at the top of any screen. The main menu bar is displayed with the following options:

How To Drive Behind Zero Off Displays the screen to create a skier profile. Starting Zero Off Zero Off automatically starts when the boat’s ignition switch is turned ON. ZeroOffstartsinthesameconfigurationinwhichitwas turned off, provided the battery was not disconnect-ed.Thismeansthesameconfigurationsettingsforboatspeed and setup selections are retained for the next operating session, provided the battery was not discon-nected. If the battery was disconnected, Zero Off starts in default mode. NOTE:ZeroOffmusthaveasatisfactoryGPSfixtooperate in speed control mode, which usually occurs within 5-10 seconds after turning on the ignition.

Zero Off and the Boat Throttle When you drive with Zero Off, you operate the throt-tle as you normally would to pull the skier up. Then you continue accelerating to the point of engagement (set speed). The Zero Off system beeps to acknowledge the point of engagement. Once engaged, push the throttle arm forward.

SLALOM AND TRICK SKIING For Slalom and Trick skiing, it is recommended that after the throttle is engaged, you push up the throttle at least 2 inches further (or to the stops) to allow Zero Off enough compensation as needed.

JUMP AND WAKEBOARD SKIING For Jump and Wakeboard skiing, it is recommended that after the point of engagement, you push the throttle handle to the stops. This is done to make sure the speed control has full control of the motor to apply the necessary input. On a DBW boat, the maximum power input from the engine can only be where the throttle handle is set.

Mapping a Course with Zero Off Zero Off offers you two ways to map a course for jump, slalom, and trick water skiing.

Using ZeroOff to Drive the Boat to Map a Course Zero Off provides on screen directions for driving the boat to map a course. The system instructs the driver to TAP the SELECT button while idling through the en-try and exit gates. TAPPING the SELECT button should occur at the instant when the GPS antennas cross the plane of the gate (not the pylon). This ensures more consistent entry gate triggering when going through the Slalom course in opposite directions. It is not necessary to map more than the entry and exit gates since tow points define a straight line, andthe location of all gates in a properly surveyed Slalom orJumpcourseshouldbecompleteddefinedbythetwogates mapped. Once the ZeroOff unit knows the loca-tion of these two gates, it simple calculates where all the remaining gates should be.

For timing purposes, ZeroOff uses the location of the entry gate as a trigger, and then calculates buoy times based on tracking how far it has traveled down the course. Distance down the course is calculated using knowledge of how fast the boat is traveling rather than triggering on the individual gate GPS coordinates. Since speed is known with high accuracy, these distances are calculated with high accuracy, and are not subject to the slow +/- 1-2 meter drift inherent in the GPS position es-timates. Thus, buoy time measurements are not subject to errors caused by normal GPS position estimate drift. GPS based velocity measurements are inherently more accurate than position estimates since they are based on a different physical measurement technique.

STATUS BAR A status bar shows how far the boat has progressed toward the 2nd gate to be mapped. The system also sounds a series of beeps as the boat nears the 2nd gate whose intensity increases to a solid beep at the gate. While bringing the boat up to speed to the point where the ZeroOff speed control engages, the driver may ma-nipulate the throttle as desired to pull the skier up and line the boat up for entry to the course. Once the boat has achieved the target speed, it is very important that the driver ensures the throttle handles is pushed all the way forward. Failure to advance the throttle to the full open setting while running the course may result in slow times since throttle handle position provides an upper limit on how much torque the engine is allowed to pro-duce. A wide-open throttle handle position frees up the engine to produce its maximum torque output and al-lows the speed control to operate at its optimum level.

Overview of Manually Entering Course Coordinates Manually entering course coordinates requires knowl-edge of the course coordinates with very high precision. The course coordinates are entered to the 5th decimal place of a minute of latitude and longitude.

Step 1: Map a Recreational Jump Course To map a recreational jump course you:

• enter a course name and • enter a target type of Jump. • Map the course:

o By driving the boat through the course while Zero Off automatically captures the coordinates, oro manually enter the course coordinates.

Way Point Way Point Event You can use Way Point to map a location on the lake. The location can be a favorite skiing spot or a location that you want to remember for the next boating season. From the Recreational screen, ZeroOff automati-cally enables Waypoint mode. If a waypoint has been mapped and is within a 1 mile radius of the boat, the system displays the name and distance away. Also the directional arrow is displayed showing which direction to steer the boat to reach the waypoint.

ZERO OFF SYSTEM DESCRIPTION Zero Off, a speed control system for boats, uses GPS technology to control boat speed for recreational and tournament water sports such as slalom and jump water skiing, wakeboarding, and trick water skiing. Simply pick the desired boat speed, shove the throttle handle wide open, and let Zero Off take care of the rest. Zero Off uses true closed loop control of boat speed. This means that as long as the boat motor has enough power, the boat automatically tracks the desired speed without having to enter complicated setup information into the system. With Zero Off in control of the boat speed, all the driver has to focus on is maintaining his boat path. For slalom and jump skiing, Zero Off can control the boat speed with the same precision and similar feel as an expert hand driver. Zero Off responds to how the ski-er pulls on the boat, and adjusts accordingly to allow the skier to get free of the boat at the appropriate times as they pass through the course. Zero Off developers work closely with world-class sla-lom and jump skiers to ensure that the boat speed and course timing are controlled accurately and smoothly. Zero Off is developed to provide an outstanding “feel” of the pull and a pull that is in synch with the skier’s needs while skiing a course.

Zero Off Installation 1. Lift dash.

a. Remove the plastic fasteners from the front of the dash.

i. Hint: Use something to support your flat head screw driver so you don’t scratch the dash.

b. Remove two Phillips head screws from the front.

c. Raise the dash enough to work behind it (do not completely remove the dash) Hint: For better access use 3/4 in. socket and remove the steering wheel.

i. Hint: Be sure to keep the steering wheel in a horizontal position when you remove it as an aide to reinstalling it with proper orientation.

2. Install the head unit.

a. Remove the factory installed gauge tabs.b. InserttheZeroOffGaugefaceplatefirstfrombe-

hind the dash.i. Hint: Unplugging some of the other gauges will

allow you to completely turn the dash over if necessary.

iii. Hint: If there is no available open spot in the dash remove one of the current gauges, mak-ing room for the Zero-Off unit.

3. Connecting the wire harness.

a. Locate Zero-Off gauge through dash. Secure gauge with the black clamp, ensuring that the gauge is hori-zontalinthedash,withthedashinstalled.Testfitthedash to make sure that the gauge is horizontal upon finalinstallation.

b. Lift dash and connect wire harness to the back of the gauge.

c. Place the other end of the wire harness through hole in dash mounting area, hanging harness down towards drivers’ foot area.

d. Locate the CAN (triangular) and the power (rect-angular) sockets underneath the dash where the boat’s steering wheel is located and connect the two male Deutsch connectors at the end of the Zero Off wire harness into the sockets. Insert the connectorsfirmlyuntila“click”isheard.

4. Install the GPS antennas.

a. PlacetheGPSantennasonaclean,flatsurfaceon the front of the boat at least 18” apart and be sure that they are unobstructed and have a clear view of the sky. Route the cables behind the seats at the front of the boat and under the dash where the boat’s steering wheel is located. Connect the antennas to the available connec-tions on the wire harness. Insert the connectors firmlyuntila“click”isheard.Forwakeboardsys-tems, which require only one antenna, be sure to connect the antenna to the primary GPS an-tenna connection on the Zero Off wire harness.

The primary GPS antenna connection has the following wire colors: Orange, Green, LT Green/Red, Black/LT Green.

b. Secure the harness wire harness and antenna wiring.

5. Reinstall the dash.

a. Using the existing hardware reinstall the dash.b. Reconnect the battery.c. Start the boat. The Zero Off screen will power

up; the splash screen will appear.

6. Installation is complete.
