fourA relaxed and friendly place. Akureyri may well be both the smallest big city of the world and the largest small village of the world. There is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere as in a small village, but services and entertainment as if it were a big city. You will enjoy interesting museums and shopping opportunities. It boasts one of the northernmost botanical garden in the world as well as an 18-hole golf course.

A short ride to the Arctic Circle. Grímsey is a small island 40 kilometres north of Iceland, situated directly on the Arctic Circle. For cruise passengers who want to cross the Arctic Circle, there are two ways to do this. Ships can sail to the north of the island. Or, you can take a flight that takes less than half an hour from Akureyri airport. In the island, certificates are issued as proof of your having crossed the Arcitc Circle.

Quality services to cruise ships. The Port of Akureyri can provide a wide variety of services to cruise ships, large or small.

The cruise season in Akureyri generally runs from May to September. This has been extended in recent years as the town and its port seek to attract more cruise ships to this northern haven.

With the increased number of passen-gers, the authorities have worked hard to improve all kinds of services, both to the cruise companies and to the passengers. The first things to greet the passengers when they go ashore are the service centre, Vitinn, and then the Culture Centre, Hof, both opened in the year 2010, offering souvenirs, money exchange, tax refund, postal service, booking service, Wi-Fi access, food service and more, as well as the Akureyri Tourist Information Centre in Hof.

The main cruise berth, Oddeyrarbryggja, is 200 metres long with 9.0 metres depth alongside. It can accommodate most of the large cruise ships that visit Iceland.

The main cruise berth has a secure area with tourist information. Visitors can step ashore and be in town in a matter of minutes. Behind the terminal building is a coach and car park for those who have booked a shore excursion or tour. Some of Europe’s most amazing scenery is just around the corner.

With snow-capped peaks on both sides and the waters of a bottomless fjord beneath, the final approach to Akureyri down the 60 km long Eyjafjörður is a source of delight to arriving cruise passengers.

After a long voyage round Iceland’s often bleak and exposed northern coastline, the sight of The Pollurinn anchorage, with the pretty town of Akureyri set beneath the picturesque peaks, is a particularly welcome one.

The port has two main cruise berths and others suited for smaller vessels.

In navigational terms the approach to Akureyri is very straight-forward, with no hazards or tidal problems.

Vessels arrive and depart with a minimum of assistance. Tug assistance is available as required. There is plenty of space available to make berthing as easy as possible, thus allowing itinerary planners to maximize the amount of time passengers spend ashore.

COMFORT REST AND RELAXATION

Today, Akureyri is the capital of northern Iceland, the country’s second-largest urban area and its fourth-largest town, with a population of 18,000. In spite of its modest size, Akureyri can boast an international airport, a large hospital, a university and a world-class swimming pool complex.

Pollurinn, the sheltered stretch of water at the inside end of the fjord, provided the ideal location for a trading base for early Danish merchants and later, it became a thriving port and agricultural town.

Although the first Nordic settlers arrived as long ago as the ninth century, the town’s recorded history does not begin until 1562. The oldest part of town is a charming spot just south of the centre and boasts, among other attractions, the oldest surviving house, Laxdalshús, built in 1795 and located at Hafnarstræti 11.

The inside end of Eyjafjörður made an ideal trading place, thanks to its sheltered harbour surrounded by fertile land for farming. The Danish merchants introduced potato crops, gardening, forestry and their own culture. They also planted trees and bushes that are still a feature of the town.

As a destination, Akureyri has the best of both worlds. A lively and attractive town and the gateway to multiple natural landscapes. Some of these are both strange and beautiful.

The natural beauty of Akureyri and its surrounding area is perhaps the biggest attraction for cruise passengers, who can choose from a range of short or longer tours and excursions. These can be booked before your cruise or on board through local companies.

Being located next to a major geothermal region, Akureyri is the closest town to some of the most spectacular sights in the country. Passengers can enjoy the stunning scenery of northern Iceland within 30 minutes of leaving the ship.

Local operators and buses are available at the cruise terminal to speed you on your way.

OperatorsThe travel agencies Atlantik Tours and Iceland Travel are among several companies that offer tours and excursions for cruise passengers, with tailor-made packages for groups of all sizes. The local coach operator, SBA-Norðurleið, works closely with the travel agencies to provide a range of transport options for cruise passengers.

Iceland’s beauty within easy reach

Akureyri may well be both the smallest big city of the world and the largest small village of the world. There is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere as in a small village, but services and entertainment as if it was a big city. You will enjoy interesting museums and shopping opportunities. It boasts one of the northernmost botanical garden in the world.

On your way from the ship’s berth to the Town’s centre, there is a new building, called HOF. The name means ‘temple’, although it is not a religious building. Hof is Akureyri’s cultural centre, among other things, housing the only professional theatre outside Reykjavik, a symphony orchestra, music hall, restaurant and more. The Akureyri Tourist Information Centre is in Hof, contact through [email protected] or call +354 450 1050.

In the centre of town, there are many restaurants, cafés and a wide range of shops, including a book store with a nice variety of books, maps and other publications as well as a Wi-Fi access. A popular store for cruise passengers to visit is a tax-free shop with a large friendly

troll figure inviting visitors to step inside. There they will find the largest selection of souvenirs, local crafts and fine woollen products in Akureyri.

For those who want to find out more about the region and its history, there are a variety of museums to visit. These include Art, Aviation, Industry and the Akureyri museum. In the oldest part of town, there is Nonni’s House, a museum dedicated to the writer and Jesuit priest Jón Sveinsson.

Kaupvangsstræti Street is often referred to as “Artist’s Alley” due to the large number of art galleries and studios surrounding the Art museum there.

Adventure and Activityin Northern Iceland

While ashore, passengers can expect to be treated to tours that afford both comfort and safety while they explore new sights around the northern part of Iceland.

SBA-Norðurleið is one of the largest coach companies in Iceland, with bases both in Reykjavík and Akureyri. They know this business in and out.

“We do our utmost to make this time ashore as enjoyable for the passengers as possible, offering comfortable coaches and a broad variety of tours with experienced drivers and guides,” says Bergþór Erlingsson, the marketing manager of SBA-Norðurleið. “We are flexible and eager to respond to requests, as long as our safety standards are not compromised. There are strict rules and regulations in this business that allow us to provide you with only the very best in sightseeing.”

Years of experience”The company has grown substantially over the years. In the year 2000, we transported about 11,000 passengers from 30 cruise ships. Now, 10 years later, we transport around 33,000 passengers from 53 ships. Not only have the number of visiting ships increased, but their size as well. With a stopover time of 7-8 hours, we can provide transportation for up to 1,500 passengers and up to 2,500 passengers if the stopover is longer or when we have more than one cruise ship in port.

A broadened variety of toursWith an increase of ships coming to Akureyri each year, Erlingsson explains that more passengers are coming for a second or third time and want to see and experience other things than in their first time here. “In response to this, we have added new itineraries that give people something different to enjoy. Some are more focused on particular locations, such as the Nature baths, a geothermal pool close to Lake Mývatn.” He also points out that with improved roads and more tunnels the variety of tours has broadened. “In the past, most of the tours headed to the area east of Akureyri, to the Lake Mývatn area. Now we offer tours to the area on the west side - Skagafjörður and the herring-village of Siglufjörður.”

Riding toursThe Icelandic horse, sometimes called ‘pony’ by foreigners, is the descendant of the Scandinavian horse that were imported to Iceland over 800 years ago. They are famous for their fifth gait - a slow walk called ‘tölt’, moving one foot at a time, which is only possible because of their small stature.

Among the first things that passengers will see when they go ashore in Akureyri is our newly built Service Centre. It was built by the Port Authority and rented out to a local businessman, Sigurður Guðmundsson, owner and manager of a popular souvenir-shop, The Viking.

“Branching out to the harbour area is a way of offering cruise passengers better service,” says Mr. Guðmundsson. “The Port Authority made a great decision by building there and we can now offer more necessities and amenities than before. Some of these include food, postal service, phones, computers with Wi-Fi, tourist information, booking service for tours and rental car delivery. We also have the traditional souvenirs and clothing sold in The Viking store in the town centre, although that one is larger and has more variety.”

Everything IcelandEvery piece, large or small, that you find in The Viking store has some connection with Iceland. “Everything we sell emphasizes Iceland and the Icelandic. Every piece is connected with the country in some way, either through design or manufacturing, and spotlights Icelandic nature, landscapes, traditions, people, animals - everything.”

The Viking offers a wide variety of clothing as well as handicrafts. Icelandic design dominates and lots of the clothing is manufactured in Iceland. Although some are factory made, others are made by individuals in their own homes, such as the famous Icelandic wool sweaters.

Tradition of tradingThere is a tradition of trading in the Guðmundson family. Sigurður’s grand-father, whose name was also Sigurður Guðmundsson, founded a clothing and toy store in the town centre, close to where The Viking store is now, more than half a century ago. He ran a successful business for decades, followed by his son and now his grandson, Sigurður, who founded The Viking store in 1999.

In twelve years, The Viking store has grown from one very small souvenir-shop in Akureyri to seven stores, located in Reykjavík, Hveragerði, Ísafjörður, as well as Akureyri.

The port of Akureyri

27

For more than a centuryThe Port of Akureyri has a long history of welcoming cruise ships and their passengers. In recent years, the number of ships and passengers has grown rapidly, with the variety and quality of services improving and increasing accordingly.

But when we look back at history, numbers seem relative. Here is a bit of history: On July 14, 1906, Oceana became the first cruise ship to come to Akureyri. Oceana had room for 250 passengers on the first deck and 160 on the second. She was built in 1888 by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Ireland. The ship was 6,610 GT, 142.75 m long and 15.88 m wide.

Since that, the Port of Akureyri has become more and more popular call for cruise ships. The fastest growth has been in the last 10 years. The number of ships and passengers, and the size of the ships, has gone through the roof. Today, over 60 cruise ships come to Akureyri each year, bringing over 60,000 passengers.
