Chapter 1: Intro to Ian Hall

I have been reading and writing eBooks over 10 years and will until I pass away. I have created eBooks over many years in PDF form, ePub and text. I was primary teaching in WA from 1981 until 1997. Since then doing casual relief teaching in Melbourne, Bendigo, Inglewood and Ballarat primary schools for past 5 years. I like ebooks for their portability in able to read anywhere and at anytime.

Chapter 2: What is an ebook?

“An electronic book (variously: e-book, eBook, e-Book, eBook, digital book, or

even e-edition) is a book-length publication in digital form, consisting of text,

images, or both, readable on computers or other electronic devices. Although

sometimes defined as "an electronic version of a printed book", many e-books

exist without any printed equivalent. Commercially produced and sold e-books

are usually intended to be read on dedicated e-book readers, however, almost

any sophisticated electronic device that features a controllable viewing screen,

including computers, many mobile phones, and all smartphones can also be

used to read e-books.”

Reference 1

“E-book files are intended for use on a specific range of devices intended for

reading. The natural content for an E-book file is therefore a text based

publications.

There are numerous free eBooks available for example from “Aesop’s fables” to

the complete works of Shakespeare. These works are usually fallen out of

copyright, and so are freely available for download from e-book stores like e.g.

Amazon, Bookstore or the O’Reilly Media bookstore.

Why do I need to create both an .epub and a .mobi file?

Amazon Kindle- .mobi

Sony eReader - .epub

B & N Nook - .epub

Apple iPad (via iBooks App) -.epub”

Chapter 3: Creating an ebook?

Writing your ebook

The first step of making an eBook can be the most challenging: You’ve got to

write something. Luckily, you’re not alone in your struggle. So just take it one

day (or one page at a time) and you’ll be at the finish line before you know it.

composition) is making sure that your book is formatted, converted, and ready

1. Add a new book

Tap the 'New book' button at the top left of the screen.

2. Choose a shape for your book

You'll then choose the shape of your book from the 3 available options,

portrait, square or landscape. The options are for what shape an individual

page will be.

3. Customise your front cover

Let's start by choosing a nice bright colour for the background of the page.

Tap the 'Inspector' button in the top right of the screen to choose a colour for

your background.

Choose from one of the standard colours or press 'Custom' to choose the

particular colour you want.

Page 28: CRT training on Crafting an ePerfect eTextbook

4. Add some text

OK, we're ready to give our book a title (make sure you've chosen a good

one!). Tap the + icon and choose 'Add text'. Type your text into the window

and press Done when finished.

If you need to change or add to the text, just touch the text and it will bring the

editing window and keyboard up again.

If you make a mistake, you can always tap the Undo button in the top menu.

5. Edit the text

So now you'll have some pretty standard black text on the page. Let's bring it

to life a little.

First, you can change the width and height of the text box by dragging the blue

handles to the size you want.

Next, whilst the text is still highlighted with the blue border, press the

'Inspector' button to access the style menu. You can adjust the size, colour,

and style of the text to your heart's content.

Page 29: CRT training on Crafting an ePerfect eTextbook

4. Add an image

"A picture tells a thousand words", so let's add a photo to bring the page to

life. Tap the + icon. You can either choose Camera and take a photo there and

then, or you can choose a photo already saved on your iPad photo library.

Find the photo you want to use and select it to make it appear in your book.

You can then resize it if you wish.

5. Add a new page

Adding a new page is a simple matter of tapping the large + button on the right

of the screen, or you can use the Pages button in the top menu.

Note that your first 2 pages are already added for you, so from the cover page,

tap the > button to start adding text and images to the rest of your book.

Page 30: CRT training on Crafting an ePerfect eTextbook

6. Saving your book

When you're done adding elements to the pages of your book, you can go

back to the start menu by tapping My books.

You'll see that your book is automatically saved and added to the list of books

you've created. You book will have the default title 'A new book' by A.N.

Author, so let's change that.

Tap on the 'Inspector' button below your book and tap on the book title or

author to change it.

Read ebooks on Apple iPad example iBook, Kobo. Wattpad and

iStorytime

iBook

iBooks by Apple

iBooks is Apple’s e-bookstore, and as such offers some impressive iPad-

specific features. It is also one of the only apps that still supports purchasing a

new e-book from within the app using your iTunes account so you can begin

reading it immediately (third party booksellers removed this feature when Apple

began enforcing the traditional iOS revenue model across all apps). The release

of iBooks Author and Apple’s push for electronic textbooks further increased

iBooks’ utility, as many of the store’s offerings contain enhanced media and

pictures that are optimized for the iPad. The interface is well-designed and easy

to use, with options for font size and style, searching, bookmarking, highlights,

notes, themes, an in-app dictionary, brightness controls, and the app syncs

your purchased books with every device using your Apple ID (although they can

only be read on your iPhone or iPad). iBooks also reads books without DRM in

ePub and PDF format, though they do not sync across your devices. For those

who prefer audiobooks, the VoiceOver feature in the settings app can be used

to read books aloud, but be aware that it affects the entire iPad, not just iBooks.

Kobo books

Kobo Books by Kobo Inc.

Kobo links to the store of the same name, and if you create an account you can

even download free books within the app. Kobo offers a more interactive and

social reading experience, which may be a plus or a minus, depending on your

views. Users can sign into their Facebook and Twitter accounts and share likes,

notes, progress, and see what other people you know are reading or have liked.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a way to turn this functionality off and

set your account to “private,” which is troubling from a major retailer. Users

who don't want the sharing functionality can use the app as a standalone reader

but, when used this way, the app doesn’t have any features that substantially

elevate it over apps such as BlueReader.

Page 44: CRT training on Crafting an ePerfect eTextbook

Wattpad books

Free Books - Wattpad eBook Reader - Read Fiction,

Romance, Fanfiction, Manga stories by top writers by Wattpad

Wattpad has been compared to YouTube for e-books, as it connects users to

tons of free e-books uploaded by other users, some of which are copyrighted

(these are removed if authors complain). The app offers a distinctive reading

experience, as autoscrolling down the page is its standard method for turning

pages. The feature works well and you can set the scroll speed, but not turning

“pages” somehow feels less like reading a book. Given the large amount of

content available, the app is definitely worth a look.

Published on 6 Dec 2012 There are a number of different types of book that you can create, both on the iPad and also on your Mac and so you will need to carefully choose the application you use to create your electronic book. In this video I look at say a few possibilities for creating e-book's on the iPad and some of them are more suited to photo books while others are better for books with a lot of text.

Chapter 11: Library eBooks/audios

I visited the Ballarat library for a session on “Learn about setting up your device

for eBooks, accessing eBooks from the library, reading your eBooks. (iPads or

Android tablets) We logged into the library (email required) via the card. Ballarat

Library has 4 eBooks and 4 audios that can be viewed for 14 day period.

I also found out that Bendigo library has the availability of 8 eBooks and 8

audios to view for 14 day period

I could download eBooks and audiobooks after reading the email I received from

Bendigo Library. I used my Windows 8 computer with my Adobe Digital Editor

and iTunes (See Reference 7 with list of downloads) to view the documents and

hear the audio recording.

eAudiobooks as well
