RECIPE FOR KIDS!

Banana Blueberry Swirl Popsicles

Makes 10 ice pops.

3 to 4 ripe bananas (1 pound)

1 1/2 cups yogurt

3 tablespoons sugar

Juice of 1/2 lemon

1 cup fresh blueberries

In the bowl of a food processor, puree bananas until smooth. Add yogurt, sugar, and lemon

juice; pulse to combine. Remove half of the yogurt mixture; set aside.

Add blueberries to processor, and pulse until just combined. Layer blueberry and reserved

yogurt mixtures into ten 1/3 cup ice-pop molds. Using a wooden skewer, swirl the two flavors

together. Insert ice-pop sticks. Transfer to freezer until frozen, about 8 hours

Dip molds quickly in hot water to unmold.

To Save a Drowning Man

The town of Harki belonged to a branch of the Polish aristocratic Radziville family. The owner spent most of his time in France and was rarely seen on his vast estates.

One of the young noblemen of the family, Benedict by name, had a very close friend in France named Pierre Louis, a young man from an assimilated Jewish family. Indeed, he was so alienated from his Jewish roots that he had no remaining Jewish ties at all.

When Benedict married, he settled on the estates of his wife’s family in Russia. His good friend, Pierre Louis, also married into a wealthy family, and settled nearby. The two lived a life of luxury and pleasure and were constantly in each other’s company.

After many years had passed, Pierre Louis was widowed. Left with no anchor in life, he immersed himself totally in a life of debauchery in the company of the Russian and Polish aristocrats who were his companions.

Once, when the chasid Rabbi Nissan went to visit the Baal Shem Tov, the Baal Shem Tov explained to him at great length the meaning of the verse in Psalms 107, “Those who go down to the sea in ships and do work in raging waters”: * The phrase “those who go down to the sea” refers to the souls that come down and enter the bodies, comparable to the seas which cover everything, as the body covers the Divine soul within it.

“But there are two kinds of descent: in one, souls descend into the sea of life - i.e. when one finds oneself within a circle of Torah. In the other, the souls descend into the midst of a raging sea without any ship in which to take refuge. Those Jews who descend into the physical body, but live in an atmosphere devoid of the light of Torah, flounder as if in a raging sea.

“Therefore,” concluded the Baal Shem Tov, “it is the duty of other Jewish souls who `do their work in raging waters,’ to save them, as they would a drowning man.”The Baal Shem Tov made it clear to Rabbi Nissan that he was referring precisely to the friend of Benedict, Pierre Louis, who was, in actuality, a Jew named Pesach Tzvi.

NightLase Laser Assisted Snoring Treatment

NightLase is a fast, patient-friendly and practically non-invasive treatment for snoring. It reduces snoring intensity with a gentle laser light treatment. NightLase is NOT laser surgery as no tissue is removed at all. INGREDIENTS

2 cups (250 g) all purpose flour

1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon cardamom

Pinch nutmeg

1/4 cup (35 g) finely chopped crystallized ginger

3/4 cup (170 g) sugar

1/2 cup (120 ml) oil

2 very ripe bananas (about 1 cup), peeled and mashed

2 large eggs

1/2 cup (125 ml) coconut milk or pareve soy milk

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

3/4 cup (130 g) pareve dark chocolate chips, or chopped dark chocolate

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 65 minutes

Total Time: 85 minutes

Yield: 1 loaf

PREPARATION

1. Preheat the oven to 350° F (180° C). Grease a loaf pan and set aside.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cardamom, and nutmeg. Add

the crystallized ginger, and toss until it is well distributed.

3. In another large bowl, whisk together the sugar,

oil, bananas, eggs, coconut or soy milk, and vanilla

extract.

4. Make a well in the middle of the flour mixture,

then slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry

ingredients, mixing constantly with a whisk or

electric beaters just until well-combined. Fold

the chocolate into the batter until it is evenly

distributed

5. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Bake in

the center of the preheated oven for 55 minutes

to 1 hour, 5 minutes, or until the banana bread is

golden brown and a tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool the bread in its pan on a

rack for 10 minutes, then remove from the pan and continue to cool completely on the rack. Well-

wrapped in foil, the banana bread will keep for 2 days at room temperature, or for up to a month in

the freezer. Enjoy!



PASSION FRUIT WINE AND MANGO FILLED BONBONS

Since we wanted the kids to be able to enjoy the Morad Passion Fruit wine with us, we made a mango passion

fruit wine coulis (where the wine is reduced so the alcohol has evaporated) and used it as a filling for dark

chocolate bonbons. Our kids devoured them as we were making them! Special equipment: candy molds &

small paint brush

INGREDIENTS

1 cup diced, fresh mango (about 1 large)

1/4 cup sugar

2 tablespoons water

1 cup Morad Passion Fruit Wine

1 cup good quality dark chocolate chips

1 1/2 tablespoons coconut oil



“This winter, Benedict will go hunting with his friend Pierre Louis and they will both visit Harki. At that time, I want you to read this letter that I am giving you, and then carry out all the instructions in it.”

Rabbi Nissan was to inform Pierre Louis that he was a Jew, named Pesach Tzvi, and that he must return to his people. Even if Pierre Louis didn’t want to listen, Reb Nissan must repeat to him exactly what the Baal Shem Tov had said. The Baal Shem Tov assured him that he would be successful.

When Rabbi Nissan returned to Harki the town was buzzing with anticipation of the aristocracy’s hunting season who habitually visited the area.

Benedict and Pierre Louis were staying, as they always did, at the home of the local priest. But this time, as Benedict entered the house, he tripped over the threshold and fell. The pistol he was carrying in his pocket discharged, and a bullet lodged in his stomach.

Pandemonium reigned as a doctor tried in vain to staunch the flow of blood. Riders were dispatched to neighboring towns to bring other doctors, but the patient’s condition deteriorated steadily.

As news of the accident spread throughout the town, the Jews were distressed to hear that Benedict, who had always been friendly toward them, was in grave danger. Rabbi Nissan opened the letter of the Baal Shem Tov, and to his astonishment, it contained a prescription for treating Benedict’s wound. In addition, the letter said that if anyone inquired how Rabbi Nissan came to know this cure, he should say that he learned it from Rabbi Yisrael Baal Shem Tov.

On the second day after the accident Rabbi Nissan arrived at the house, saying he had a cure for Benedict. The desperate doctor allowed the Jew to be admitted. The rabbi spread an ointment on the wound and also put some medicine down the wounded man’s throat. To the amazement and relief of all, the cure took effect within an hour.

Only then did Rabbi Nissan approach Pierre Louis and ask to speak to him in private. He related all the words of the Baal Shem Tov, telling him that he was a Jew, and must return to his people, but Pierre Louis was too shocked to respond.

It was months later, in the spring, that Pierre Louis arrived in Harki and came to Rabbi Nissan. He said he could not rest since the day they had spoken, and now he finally resolved to return to his people. Over the next year he studied and made great progress.

Benedict was quite sympathetic to his friend’s return to Judaism, and as a gift he gave him an estate outside Harki. As an additional display of good will, Benedict presented to the local Jews the land on which their houses were built. In this manner the existence of the Baal Shem Tov and his circle of mystics became known in Harki. ■



SICHOS in ENGLISH

May G-d bless every one of the supporters

and everyone of the shluchim in everything

they need. This is particularly relevant now

that the majority of the month of Adar has

already past and we are within thirty days of

the month of Pesach.

This is an appropriate time to focus our at-

tention on Maos Chittim, the collection of

funds to help people with their Pesach needs.

Similarly, we must focus on the spiritual di-

mensions of Maos Chittim, explaining the

laws of Pesach to those who are unaware

of them.

It is important to mention this now, because

many of these matters, e.g., the purchase of

dishes, their immersement in the mikvah,

the ordering of kosher — and particularly ac-

cording to our custom, Shemurah — matzah,

require time.

As mentioned in the previous sicha, this

week’s Torah portion, Parshas Vayikra, be-

gins, “And G-d called to Moshe,” to the spark

of Moshe in every Jew. This allows a Jew to

create a Sanctuary, a place for the Divine

presence to rest, within his heart.

There is a further point. When G-d calls

to a Jew in regard to spiritual concerns, He

also calls to him in regard to his material con-

cerns, endowing him with all of his needs. In

this context, we can appreciate the sequence

between Parshas Vayikra and Parshas Tzav.

Rashi notes that the opening of Parshas Tzav,

has to do with chisaron kis, a lack of money.

This, however, should not be interpreted as

referring to a state of need. Instead, it means

that G-d grants the Jews ample and abun-

dant blessings, and the Jews use this money

for tzav, to establish a tzavsa, connection and

bond, with G-d by giving tzedakah, and by

bringing all the aspects of Yiddishkeit into

their homes, and into the homes of the peo-

ple to whom they were sent as shluchim. (I.e.,

in addition to the general mission of serving

his Creator which each person was granted

together with the Jewish people as a whole,

he was given a particular mission to serve as a

shliach in a specific place.)

This involves spreading the mitzvos of

Pesach, i.e., the nullification of chametz,* and

preparing to celebrate “a kosher and happy

festival.” In particular, greater potential for

the success of these activities is granted as

we approach the month of Nissan, a month

of miracles.

Because of a Jew’s involvement in these ac-

tivities, a Jew will suffer some financial lack.

But again, the intent is not that he personally

will lack. Rather, that his use of the resources

which he was granted by G-d will cost. Nev-

ertheless, he will still have ample prosperity

and abundance in both a material and a spiri-

tual sense.

From Parshas Tzav, we proceed to Par-

shas Shemini. Shemini, meaning “the eighth,”

shares a connection with the future redemp-

tion for the number eight is frequently men-

tioned in that context. Parshas Shemini also

contains a reference to Moshe’s prayer at the

dedication of the Sanctuary, “May the Divine

Presence rest amidst the work of your hands.”

May the Divine Presence rest amidst each of

us, and amidst the Jewish people as a whole,

in these final days of the period of exile. And

may we merit, as our Sages say in connection

with Purim and Pesach, “to join redemption

to redemption,” celebrating the complete and

ultimate redemption today. Then we will pro-

ceed, “on the clouds of heaven” to Eretz Yisra-

el, to Jerusalem, and to the Beis HaMikdash.

May the Divine Presence rest amidst the

work of our hands, and amidst the work of

your hands. ■* In a spiritual sense, the nullification of chametz refers to

freeing oneself from the influence of the yetzer hora.
