President’s foreword - Ian SmithTHE AMMA National Conference is a key annual event for resource industry employers. This year’s conference is set against a backdrop of record resources investment, a federal election and ongoing uncertainty in the global operating environment.

Productivity, human resources, employee relations, policy and strategies are just some of the big issues to be tackled at this preeminent annual gathering of workplace-focused professionals.

The 2013 AMMA National Conference brings you respected thought leaders from industry, government and academia - all offering insight on the evolving challenges and success stories within the resource industry.

Operators and employers across AMMA’s diverse membership can get up to speed on their speciality areas with Day One’s popular Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings and interactive workshops.

Day Two will open with an address from Premier of Victoria Dr. Denis Napthine before rolling into a full program of hard-hitting plenary sessions. Three of Australia’s leading analytical minds in Tim Harcourt, Saul Eslake and Bernard Salt will examine our nation’s economic, competitive and labour challenges through their unique disciplines.

HR specialists will particularly benefit from Leighton Holdings’ Dharma Chandran’s reflections on employee engagement. Later, a specialist panel session featuring industry, union and industrial tribunal identities will cover the hard-hitting workplace relations issues relevant to day-to-day business.

Also not to be missed is former AFL star Michael Long’s Indigenous engagement presentation and the afternoon’s

panel discussion on our industry’s priorities for the next federal government.

With a full-day of discussions behind us, it will then be time to unwind and celebrate excellence within our industry at the AMMA Gala Dinner and Industry Awards. Make sure you attend this highly enjoyable event for the opportunity to network with peers old and new.

On Day Three of the Conference an impressive line-up of speakers will present a range of views, research and case studies on managing high-performing workforces in increasingly complex operating environments.

Highlights include a special presentation by Gina Rinehart and Ian Plimer on the Roy Hill Project while the afternoon’s concurrent sessions delve deeper into a range of specialist content.

AMMA is renowned for its relationships and engagement with Australia’s key policy makers and the Conference will again feature high profile political guests such as Bill Shorten, Joe Hockey and Eric Abetz.

As the resource industry’s national employer group, AMMA is pleased to offer you an opportunity to attend this outstanding event.

A special thank you is extended to our major sponsors, Sodexo, nib resources, Big Sky and Coverforce for supporting this important national event.

I urge you to join your industry peers for this opportunity to consider how we can strategically improve our individual business operations and progress economic and employment opportunities for all Australians.

Ian Smith - CeO, ORICA AMMA President

Message from the Hon Dr Denis Napthine MP Premier of VictoriaVictoria warmly welcomes delegates and presenters to Melbourne for the 2013 AMMA National Conference. This significant occasion takes places in one of Melbourne’s best corporate events facilities, Crown Conference Centre, alongside one of Australia’s pre-eminent entertainment precincts.

We may not be regarded as one of the ‘big two’ mining states, but Victoria’s vibrant capital is a fitting host city for Australia’s largest annual gathering of resource industry professionals. Our state has a proud history of mineral resources activity, dating back to the famous gold rushes of the 19th Century.

While Ballarat and Bendigo remain historic centres of Australia’s gold activity, Victoria’s modern resources sector is concentrated on energy-producing minerals, from brown coal, oil and gas to emerging industries such as geothermal and geosequestration.

Our state’s petroleum exploration and production in the Otway and Gippsland Basins has produced approximately two thirds of Australia’s cumulative oil production and one third of its gas production to date.

Victoria is also home to cutting-edge new offshore oil and gas developments including the $4.3 billion Kippa Tuna Turrum project. The Victorian Coalition Government supports and promotes investment opportunities in the state’s resource industry and highly values the economic and employment benefits that follow.

AMMA’s innovative 2013 National Conference program brings together hundreds of leaders and visionaries from industry, academia and government to consider the many challenges that the dramatic expansion of the national resource industry is creating for employers.

I encourage you all to actively participate, learn, and network with colleagues, associates and friends during your stay. I hope you have an opportunity to discover our city’s many cultural experiences or perhaps some of our great outdoor attractions while you are here. Most of all, enjoy your time in Melbourne and Victoria.

the Hon Dr Denis Napthine MP Premier of victoria

The AWRA e-Mentoring Program is a practical way to encourage the participation and advancement of women in the resource, allied and construction industries in Australia where remote location and complex rosters are a barrier to participating in traditional mentoring programs.

Participants in the program communicate with each other through an online platform as well as email, chat, Skype and phone. Expert advice and guidance is provided along the way to ensure participants get the most from the experience.

Sign up to be a mentor today and assist a woman to reach her full potential while also developing professional and personally.

The AWRA e-Mentoring program needs experienced men and women in the industry to share their knowledge with mentees.

The AWRA e-Mentoring Program is delivered by AMMA and funded by the Australian Government through the National Resources Sector Workforce Strategy.
