Crossrail – The History

• A rail route traversing London from east to west

• Runs from Maidenhead, through London, terminating at Shenfield & Abbey Wood

• Idea dates back to (at least) 1943

• Further discussed in reports by the GLC in 1969 and British Rail in 1974 (the latter report coined the term “Crossrail”)

• Crossrail plan approved 2007

Crossrail – The benefits

• By 2031 an additional 1.3 million people will be working in London with an extra seven hundred thousand journeys a day. 

• It will bring and extra 1.5 million people within 45 minutes’ commuting distance of London.

• Reduced journey times. For example:

Crossrail – How big is it?

• Over 100km long and the largest construction project in Europe

• Go live in 2018

• Two new 21km-long tunnels will carry trains in London

Crossrail – Installation objectives

• Make changes to existing LU stations in order to support local Crossrail works and...

• Procure and install ticketing and revenue equipment at ‘new builds’ i.e. the Crossrail stations themselves

Typical Installation activities

• Design support; Define scope of works with the client and Cubic, carry out site visits, comment on drawings, advise client on project dependencies

• Procurement; Confirm hardware requirement, produce initial cost estimate for budgeting purposes, submit procurement order and track delivery progress.

Typical Installation activities

• Installation; make sure that Cubic’s requirements for installing equipment e.g. Data, power, containment and civil works are supplied, co-ordinate testing services (supplied by Service Team) with the end of Cubic’s works on site

• Handover; review test results, advise client on completion of works, collate handover documentation e.g. ‘as-built’ drawings, test certificates.

Paddington• Objectives: Construction of a new Ticket Hall for

the H&C line, to cope with increased customer demand through Crossrail.

• Progress: Gateline installed and operational. Construction of the Station Operations Room and POM Suite outstanding

Bond Street• Objectives: Construct an additional Ticket Hall for

LU, make the existing gateline fully bi-directional to cope with the passenger flow during Crossrail construction.

• Progress: Awaiting go-ahead from client to carry out gateline works.

Risks and Issues

• Ensuring WAN, gating and ticketing requirements are included in the Electra contract.

• A new contractor could be in place that has different power, data and civils requirements to Cubic’s

• No single LU client co-ordinating these works

• TVMs are based on what Cubic can provide now (not in 6 years). Not clear if TVM numbers per station take FTP’s popularity into account.
