The 3031 Crosspatch

Introduction

The 3031 Crosspatch provides a method of connecting an HF communication system with a VHF or UHF communication system. The crosspatch may be used in a mobile or fixed base station.

Figure 1: Front panel of the 3031 Crosspatch

Power supply

The 3031 Crosspatch is powered via its connection to the Codan HF Transceiver. When the HF transceiver is switched on, the connected crosspatch will also have power.

NOTE

Two variants of the 3031 Crosspatch are available: 15-way D-type connector on flying lead for

use with a 2010 RF Unit/2030 Junction Box, a 2012 RF Unit, or a 2110 Interface Adaptor.

Compatibility

The 3031 Crosspatch is designed to be compatible with a wide range of VHF and UHF transceivers. The VHF or UHF transceiver must have:

a Tx audio input

an Rx audio output with constant volume (that is, its level is not dependent on the volume setting)

an active low PTT input control signal

a squelch (or carrier detect) output control signal

DTMF-capable VHF/UHF transceivers

The method of entering a DTMF command varies across the range of DTMF-capable VHF/UHF transceivers. When you enter a DTMF command, you should follow the process required for your VHF/UHF transceiver. In the instructions provided in this guide, only the DTMF command to be entered is provided, not the method of entering the command.

NOTE

See the documentation provided with your VHF/UHF transceiver to check that these capabilities are available, or consult with your VHF/UHF dealer. Some transceivers require software configuration to enable these signals.

NOTESee the documentation provided with your VHF/UHF transceiver to determine how it transmits DTMF signals.

Operating modes

The operating status of the crosspatch may be controlled:

directly by the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch

by using DTMF commands on a DTMF-capable VHF/UHF transceiver

The crosspatch may be switched off to prevent patching between an HF communication network and a VHF/UHF communication network.

NOTE For information on each operating mode see page 50, Operating modes.

Channel namesYou can use a DTMF-capable VHF/UHF transceiver to command the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch to select a specific channel. However, only numeric digits can be entered into the DTMF-capable VHF/UHF transceiver, and you must include a leading zero if the channel is less than 10.

This does not restrict all of the channels in your Codan HF transceiver to having numeric-only names like 01, 02, and so on. In particular, if you already have established channel names with which your operators are familiar, these can still be used with some small adjustments made to the setup of the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch.

Any channel names in your existing networks that have no common naming convention (such as Codan 01, Night 02, Day 03), may be used with the crosspatch. In this case, it is recommended that the channel names contain different numeric sequences. To use these existing channels you can use the default channel prefix command (see page 31, The default channel prefix).

If you have grouped channel names in your existing networks (such as Codan 01, Codan 02, Night 01, Night 02), these channels are easily used with the crosspatch. To use these existing channels you must define a specific channel prefix (see page 32, Defining a channel prefix).

NOTEThe only restriction placed on channel names is that they must include a 1 or 2-digit numeric sequence in the name.

NOTEFor information on grouping entries see the documentation provided with the Codan HF transceiver.

The RS232 [15way] Startup entry

The Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch has an entry in the Control List that enables you to set up attributes for the port to which the crosspatch is connected. These attributes are read on startup. In an NGT series Transceiver this entry is called RS232 15way Startup. In the 2110 Manpack Transceiver this entry is called RS232 Startup.

The default channel prefix

If you do not enter a channel prefix command as described below, the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch selects a channel based on the numeric sequence in the channel name. It ignores any alpha characters that appear in the name, and removes any leading zeros from the numeric sequence.

If you have channels that contain different alpha names but the same numeric sequence (such as Codan 1, Night 01, Day 1), and a command is received from the crosspatch to select channel 01, the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch selects the channel named Codan 1. This selection is based on the number 1, and Codan 1 is selected because it is listed alphabetically before Day 1. The channel named Night 01 is ignored in the selection process.

1 Go to the RS232 [15way] Startup entry in the Control List.

1 Access the entry so that you can edit it.

1 Enter the channel prefix that you want to define in the following format:

CHANPREFIX "<prefix> " [RemoveZeros]

NOTE

In the following discussions, you must log into the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch as administrator to see the Control List. For information on logging in as administrator see the documentation provided with the Codan HF transceiver.

Alternatively, you can use NSP to program the entry in the Control List. For information on programming with NSP see the on-line help provided with the software.

CAUTION

If the prefix contains a space to separate it from the numeric sequence (for example, Codan 01), you must include quotes around the prefix and space in the chanprefix command.

NOTE This command is not case-sensitive.

Networks and channels

A self address may be allocated to a specific network or to all networks. Therefore, if you want to restrict crosspatch traffic to a number of channels only, create a network for the particular calling system you want to use, add the channels to this network only, then allocate the self address of the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch to this network only. Alternatively, you can allocate a self address and network for use by the crosspatch only (see page 43, Setting up a separate self address for the crosspatch).

When you use a DTMF command to select a channel for a call (that is, scan is switched off), the Codan HF transceiver automatically selects a Codan Selcall network that contains this channel. If the channel is contained in more than one Codan Selcall network, the Codan HF transceiver selects the Codan Selcall network that appears first in alphabetical order in the Network List.

NOTE

In the following discussions, you must log into the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch as administrator to see the Network List and Control List. For information on logging in as administrator see the documentation provided with the Codan HF transceiver.

Alternatively, you can use NSP to program the Codan HF transceiver. For information on programming with NSP see the on-line help provided with the software.

NOTE

The self address of the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch must be allocated to all networks that contain channels that you want to use for crosspatch communication.

A VHF/UHF transceiver that is not capable of DTMF operation cannot command the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch to select a specific channel. It can only command the Codan HF transceiver to select the default channel by pressing PTT three times within 1.5 s. For information of setting the default channel see page 38, Setting the default channel.

Any remote HF transceivers listening for VHF/UHF communications can be set to scan, however the Mute Scan status of these transceivers must be set to Voice or Scan for voice, since the VHF/UHF transceiver making the call cannot make a Selective call to a remote HF transceiver unless such a call is set up in the XP 99 entry of the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch (see page 40, Entries in the Address List of the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch).

To set up the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch to remain on a specific channel:

1 Access the Auto Resume Mode entry in the Control List, then set it to Off.

1 Press SCAN until a pop-up informs you that scanning is off.

The tone sequence is heard on VHF/UHF.

1 Press V/S until a highlighted V appears on the channel screen.

To set up the remote Codan HF transceiver that communicates with a crosspatch station that remains on a specific channel:

Self address of the Codan HF transceiverThe self address of a Codan HF transceiver is the unique identifier for the transceiver that is used by other HF transceivers to make a call to it.

If a remote HF transceiver needs to be called directly by a DTMF-capable VHF/UHF transceiver using DTMF command *aaaa##, the self address entered into the remote HF transceiver must be numeric and between 3 and 15 digits long.

If your existing HF communication network of transceivers uses other alphanumeric address formats, you do not have to change these. Instead, you can set up the Address List of the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch with entries that will automatically make a call to the specified HF transceiver with the alphanumeric address. When you make a call via a DTMF-capable VHF/UHF transceiver using one of these entries in the Address List, you need to specify the entry number corresponding to the HF transceiver that you want to call using DTMF command *ee##. For information on setting up the Address List see page 40, Entries in the Address List of the Codan HF transceiver connected to the crosspatch.
