How can I begin to thank you, friends and members of Holy Cross? The past ten years have re-formed any expectations I had about ordained ministry. I believed that by age sixty I would have been shaped, for the most part, in the ways God wanted to shape me for whatever ministry God called me into. Wrong. During my time serving Holy Cross I have learned more about what “church” is and is called to be than I could have anticipated. Thank you, People of Holy Cross, who are the Church, for patiently teaching me. And most recently, thank you for the beautiful “retiring weekend” and the precious gifts you gave me. The Day of Pentecost has always been my favorite in the Church’s calendar of celebrations, and you have always welcomed the Holy Spirit heartily. The picnic could not have been more perfect. My friends from other churches felt welcome and honored and happy to be among you. The photographs of Holy Cross are hanging in our dining room—where we spend happy times every day—and they surround me with wonderful memories, love, and gratitude for you and our church. Finally, your generous donations to Hope House are allowing us to purchase four new “stack” washers and dryers and some picnic tables for our neighbors to enjoy. The washers and dryers are a grade above those designed for home use, since they run several hours each day, five days a week. Thank you for constantly enhancing our ministry in our neighborhood, and for your love for our neighbors. I leave Holy Cross, for a time, with a heart full of gratitude and hope for the future. Your concern for all people who have no voice in our culture, grounded in love and worship of God, is the unique heart of Holy Cross. Thank you for all you are and continue to be, and for all you have given to my life and to those of Herschel and our children! From Priest Mary to the People of Holy Cross

Thank you! The washers and

dryers are a grade above those designed for home use, since they run several hours each day, five days a week. Thank you for all

Daily Feast: Meditations on the Word, Year C Louisville: Westminster, John Knox Press, 2012

The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost July 7, 2019

2 Kings 5:1-14 Psalm 30 Galatians 6: (1-6) 7-16 Luke 10:1-11, 16-20

(Galatians 6: (1-6) 7-16) Freedom in Christ brings responsibility for the welfare of others. In Christ, believers become keepers of their brothers and sisters. The authentic Christian life humbly devotes itself to the benefit of others, sharing and receiving whatever is helpful.

Robert A. Bryant

The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost July 14, 2019

Amos 7:7-17 Psalm 82 Colossians 1:1-14 Luke 10:25-37

(Psalm 82) This psalm reveals the source of God’s wrath. God looks with special solicitude on the weak, the orphan, the poor, and the needy. God is especially incensed at the exploitation of the weak at the hands of the strong.

Charles L. Aaron

Holy Cross hosted a number of visitors for our LGBT Pride Mass on Friday, June 28. People from all over the Ark-La-Tex showed up, including folks from as far away as Longview, to find out more about this church, our hospitality and message.

Fr. Boyte preached on the virtues of a life lived to its fullest authenticity and truth, and the music was splendid. Jo Ann Horton cut us to the heart with her solo of Leonard Bernstein’s Simple Song, and Bruce Power provided riveting musical selections such as we are used to hearing.

After the mass there was a small reception in the Undercroft, where visitors and church members were able to talk about their experiences with Holy Cross and with the LGBT rights movement.

We were all very happy to show Shreveport-Bossier that Holy Cross is here to support our community by welcoming all people in the name of Jesus Christ! The happiness shows on the faces of our members and guests:

Jo Ann Horton’s Lifelong Journey

Worship has been an important part of Jo Ann Horton’s life for as long as she can remember. As a teenager she looked into different monastic orders, but lacked guidance and didn’t know how to proceed. She had grown up in the Missionary Baptist tradition, and then was part of a nondenominational church for several years. One day she was walking downtown, pushing her son Aaron in a stroller. As she passed in front of Holy Cross, a woman greeted her and invited her in. That woman was Ginger Paul! Jo Ann accepted

her invitation, and says she “has been hooked ever since.” By the time Aaron was in kindergarten, Father Paul had taken him under his wing, and after a few more years trained him to be an acolyte. Ginger encouraged Jo Ann to participate actively in the church, and Jo Ann was eager to do so. She sings in the choir, serves on the altar guild, and has served on the vestry. She was also responsible for forming the St. Mary chapter of Daughters of the King at Holy Cross.

Jo Ann thought about the priesthood, and also considered becoming a deacon. She calls this period her “battle with God,” because she didn’t want to leave Holy Cross but knew that if she took orders she would have to do so. Her desire to delve more deeply into the religious life stayed with her; in her words, “it is something that never goes away.”

Then, along came Sister Anna Grace Madden, a member of The Companions of St. Luke, an Episcopalian-Benedictine order. From her Jo Ann learned more about the order, and she became convinced that it was just what she had been looking for. Jo Ann and Aaron traveled to the Conception Abbey in Conception, Missouri and stayed there for a week. Now, under the mentorship of Sister Anna Grace, Jo Ann is a postulant to the order. After a year as postulant, she will be a novice for two years before taking her final vows.

Jo Ann says that the life of study, prayer, and work is demanding, and that it can be a challenge to balance the religious life with the secular. However, she finds it thrilling and fulfilling to begin this new stage of her journey.

Sunday, July 7: The Continuing Feast

It’s time for another feast! We’ll meet in the Undercroft after the 11:00 service for delicious food, sparkling conversation, and good fellowship. Please bring an appetizer, main course, salad, side dish, or dessert. Bring your appetite and your friends as well! If you aren’t a cook, store-bought contributions are welcome. Note: In the hot summer months we encourage people to bring cold dishes—salads, fruit, cold cuts, etc.—but whatever you bring will certainly be appreciated.
