A word from the office...Welcome to the Spring edition of our
newsletter and my first edition as Manager of the Scheme! At the end of last year we held our
AGM and farewell to Moira with a record breaking attendance of 185. We welcomed
Mick Ward, Interim Deputy Director, Adult Social Care at Leeds City Council who gave an excellent speech with an insight into some of the work that is going on in Leeds. I for one feel privileged that our scheme can be part of this.Much of my workload at the moment and the reason you may see less of Claire and myself around the office is the Leeds City Council Neighbourhood Network review. Thanks to everyone who has completed the Service User Engagement questionnaire - this is important as it is real evidence of what our Scheme does or means to you. So we start this year busy but with lots of positives - we’re really pleased to announce that Time to Shine, managed by Leeds Older People’s Forum has recently extended our funding for ‘More than a Mealtime’ for a further two years which is excellent and reflects the good work the project is doing.Jo Horsfall - Manager
Please note the Scheme will be closed week commencing 8 May.
No groups will run during this week. For more information please contact the office.

Our T–Days Group runs every Thursday at Crossgates Working Men’s Club. It originally started with funding from the People’s Health Trust and we decided
to continue the group when the original funding came to an end.
The group has grown steadily but needed a new kitchen to allow for a Lunch Club. After speaking with the Committee at the Club we decided to renovate the kitchen. This was made possible through funding from Community Committee Well-Being Fund, Housing Advisory Panel, Killingbeck and Seacroft Councillors Mice Money, the group members fundraising which included a large donation from The ‘Old Ball’ at Horsforth and the Club renewed all the electrics. This project was managed by Moira last year who did a fantastic job. The kitchen is now up and running - we start with T-Days exercise class from 9.45am-10.30am, running alongside a coffee morning from 9.45am-midday followed by lunch at 12pm. You can come to just one or all of the activities. We also have some transport available if you live in the Poole Estate, Farm Road, Maryfields, Highways, Sutton Estate and Dunhills area.A big thank you to John Clarke, plumber; JH Decorating; Lockwood’s Services GAS; Halton Carpet Centre; A.R Winter Plastering and SML Stainless Metalwork who all did a fantastic job.

Reducing Loneliness & IsolationOur new project Supported
Wellbeing funded by Time to Shine, a project of Leeds Older People’s Forum to reduce social isolation started in October.
We have got off to a fantastic start with eight volunteer befrienders signed
up, four of those have been matched with an older person for weekly visits. Older people in our community who are unable to get out independently in order to socialise are now starting to receive befriending visits to improve their social life and prospects for new friendships. This is just the beginning, we want to help as many people in our community as possible with your help.An hour or so per week on a regular basis can make a huge difference to someone’s life, bringing friendly chat, a listening ear and a connection to the community.
Could you be a ‘befriender’?If you want to make a real difference with just a small amount of time and think you would like to volunteer and be part of this fantastic project please contact Kathie or Claire (pictured right) at the office on 0113 260 6565.

Reducing Loneliness & IsolationCatch up with Carol
Jane Robinson recently caught up with Carol Metcalfe, a recently recruited volunteer befriender for our new
Supported Wellbeing project to find out more about her new role.
When did you start volunteering with the project?I dropped by the Scheme in October because I’d heard they had a list of recommended tradesmen I could access. Whilst I was here I started talking to Claire and she introduced me to the Supported Wellbeing project. What’s your roleEvery week I visit Betty, a lovely lady in her 80s who doesn’t live too far away. I visit for an hour to have a chat. To start with I was nervous about visiting someone I didn’t know but once I went in, we found it easy to talk to each other about family, children and grandchildren. What do you enjoy the most?I’ve just taken early retirement so I now have a bit more time on my hands. It’s lovely to hear Betty’s tales about her family and I’m really enjoying it. I think I’ve made a new friend.Would you recommend it to others?Definitely, it’s very rewarding.

Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier.
Walking in a group is a great way to start walking, make new friends and
stay motivated. Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers too. If you’ve been thinking about joining our regular Monday Walking group here are a few nuggets of information to encourage you to join!
Ten Facts you might not know about our walking group!1. The group started just over twelve years ago with
a walk around Roundhay Park and we have seven volunteer leaders
2. One or two of the ‘original’ walkers are still with us3. We now have a library of around 80 walks - so no walk
is repeated in a year and we walk every week - giving around 48 planned walks a year
4. We aim at a distance of 3.5 miles. Some walks are as short as 3 miles but never over 4.25 miles
Keeping HealthyFind the
walking
schedule on
our website
15
5. We walk in all weathers. Only twice have walks been cancelled in twelve years. Six hardy souls walked in snow!
6. Our usual number is around 25 (26 turned out on 2 January this year for a local walk around Primrose Valley when the Scheme was officially closed!)
7. We alternate walks between using mini-buses (ours and St Teresa’s Primary School), keeping walks local or using public transport
8. The mini bus enables us to walk around Otley, Harewood, Thorner and Wakefield plus the Leeds Liverpool canal tow paths.
9. Using railways we have access to areas such as Ilkley, Todmorden and Hebden Bridge to the
west and Micklefield and Garforth to the east.
10. Canal walking is well liked. It takes us five sessions of three miles or so, to walk from Leeds to Bingley Five Rise Locks
So no excuses! We’ll see you on Monday!
