CROSS COUNTRY & TRACK - 3

One of the nation’s most successful coaches, Ray Treacy embarks on his 28th season as Director of Cross Country and Track Operations at Providence College. In his 27 years at Providence, Treacy has coached 142 All-Americans, 13 NCAA individual champions, 134 BIG EAST individual champions and 13 Olympians. In addition, his teams have captured one NCAA Cross Country Championship, 11 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, 20 BIG EAST Cross Country titles and 20 New England Championships. Treacy's road to success began when he was a student-athlete at Providence College. A 1982 graduate of the College, Treacy is very committed to the success of PC's cross country and track programs. His knowledge of conditioning and training has moved the Friars' cross country and track programs into national prominence since he took over as head coach in 1984. Success and Ray Treacy have been synonymous at Providence College. Besides his long lists of BIG EAST, ECAC, IC4A and New England Champions, Treacy was instrumental in putting together the 4 X 1,500 meter relay team that set the world record at the Penn Relays in 1991. For his achievements, he was named Rhode Island Words Unlimited Coach of the Year (1991). In 1995, Treacy's women's cross country squad completed its incredible season by capturing its first NCAA title. Prior to winning the NCAA title, the women's squad also won its first BIG EAST and ECAC championships. In recognition of his efforts, Treacy was named NCAA Division I

Women's National Coach of the Year, BIG EAST Men's and Women's Coach of the Year, Rhode Island Words Unlimited Women's Coach of the Year and NCAA District I Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. In 2003-04, the women's cross country team finished third at the NCAA Championships with juniors Kim Smith and Mary Cullen leading the way. Smith finished second overall, while Cullen took fifth-place to earn All-America honors. Providence was the only team to have two runners finish in the top five. The women's team also won its third Northeast Regional title and Treacy was named Northeast Regional Coach of the Year for the seventh time since 1990. In the indoor season that school year, Smith continued to shine. She became the first Providence female athlete to capture two NCAA titles in the same meet, winning the 3,000 and 5,000 meters in NCAA record time. Smith's time of 15:14.18 in the 5,000 meters shattered the previous NCAA record of 15:17.28, which was set in 1991. In the 3,000 meters, Smith also set a NCAA record, finishing the race in 8:49.18 and eclipsing the old record of 8:53.54, which was set in 1983. Smith helped the Friars to a ninth-place finish at the NCAAs, the team's best performance since 1992 (when the Friars placed fourth). On the men's side, Adam Sutton earned All-America honors by placing eighth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Championships. During the outdoor track season, Smith also won the 5,000 meters to claim her third NCAA individual title. In all, Smith set three NCAA records and four Providence College records.

4 - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS

The 2004-05 season proved to be another banner year for Treacy's teams. The women's cross country team placed third at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season and captured its fourth BIG EAST title. Again, the team was paced by Kim Smith, who capped off her brilliant career at PC by winning the NCAA Championship. Treacy also guided both the men's and women's cross country teams to the NCAA Northeast Regional title and he repeated as regional Coach of the Year. The men's cross country team made its 10th consecutive appearance at the NCAAs and finished 21st. The team also won its 24th New England crown. Seven PC All-Americans were crowned during the 2005-06 season as the Friars continued their tradi-tion of success. Martin Fagan finished 16th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships to earn his first All-America honor. On the women's side, senior Fiona Crombie also was tabbed as an All-American with a 14th-place finish as the women's cross country team made its 17th consecutive trip to the NCAAs. During the indoor track season, senior Mary Cullen finished second in the 3,000 meters at the NCAAs, earning her fifth All-America accolade. The men's team was led by junior All-American Max Smith who placed sixth in the mile at the NCAAs. Treacy also guided Fagan and Cullen to BIG EAST titles in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters and both were named Most Outstanding Performers at the BIG EAST Championships. The outdoor track season was another milestone for Providence. Running in her final race, Cullen won the 5,000 meters at the NCAAs and became Treacy’s ninth individual NCAA champion. Cullen's performance helped Providence finish in a tie for 25th-place, the highest result of any BIG EAST team. The men's team recorded its highest finish ever at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships, placing 16th, which also was the best of any BIG EAST team. Fagan placed second in the 10,000 meters and Smith finished third in the 1,500 meters, each reaching All-America honors. In 2006-07, the men's and women's cross country teams enjoyed stellar seasons. Both teams were crowned BIG EAST Champions, Treacy’s 11th men’s title and fifth women’s. Shortly after, both squads finished among the top-10 at the NCAA Championships, with the women's team capturing seventh-place and the men landing in ninth. Individually, Martin Fagan won the individual BIG EAST title

and completed the season with a fifth-place finish at the NCAAs. Aine Hoban finished second at the BIG EAST Championship for the women and seventh at the NCAAs. Fagan and Hoban each earned All-America honors for their efforts. At the conclusion of the BIG EAST Championships, Treacy and his assistants were honored as BIG EAST Staff of the Year in both men's and women's cross country. At season's end, Fagan was honored by the USTFCCCA as the Division I Northeast Region Male Athlete of the Year. During the indoor and outdoor track seasons, three Friars won a total of four BIG EAST individual titles, led by Max Smith’s two individual championships in the mile (indoor) and 1,500 meters (outdoor). Hoban (5,000 meter indoor) and Fagan (3,000 meter indoor) were PC's other BIG EAST individual champions on the year. Hoban, Smith and Fagan also earned All-America honors during the track seasons. Hoban led the way, having earned All-America recognition in the 5,000 meters (indoor) and 10,000 meters (outdoor). Fagan claimed All-American honors in the 3,000 meters (indoor) and Smith was recognized in the 1,500 meters (outdoor). Prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championship, Smith was named USTFCCCA Division I Northeast Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year. In the 2009 outdoor track season, Danette Doetzel won the BIG EAST title in the 10,000 meters, qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Doetzel concluded her illustrious career at Providence College by capturing the 10,000 meter title at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships. Doetzel's victory was the 10th NCAA individual title for the Providence College women's track and cross country program under Coach Ray Treacy. The tradition of excellence continued during the 2010 cross country campaigns. Junior Lee Carey captured the men’s program’s 11th individual BIG EAST title when he beat the field just outside Syracuse, N.Y. One month later, the Friars continue a remarkable trend - qualifying both the men and women for the NCAA’s in 14 of the last 15 seasons. The women’s represented PC on their sport's largest stage in 22 straight autumns. Several of the coach’s student-athletes have gone on to leave their mark internationally. In 1996, three athletes, all trained under Treacy's guidance at Providence, became PC's first female track stars to compete in the Olympics. Sinead Delahunty (1,500 meters), Marie McMahon (5,000 meters) and Amy Rudolph (5,000 meters) all competed in Atlanta, Ga. Treacy had three former Friars compete in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, as well, with Delahunty (1,500 meters), Rudolph (5,000 meters) and Mark Carroll (5,000 meters) all running in the 2000 Games. Kim Smith, Marie McMahon, Maria McCambridge and Mark Carroll competed in the 2004 Games in Athens, Greece. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Kim Smith (10,000 meters), Roisin McGettigan (3,000 meter steeplechase) and Martin Fagan ’07 (Marathon) all competed. The brother of 1984 Olympic silver medalist, John Treacy, Ray’s collegiate list of accomplishments and accolades is lengthy. He was the Friar’s team captain during his junior and senior year and collected All-America honors on three occasions. He was a two-time, New England cross country champion and won the indoor 5,000 meters at the BIG EAST Championships three times. The talented distance runner was also the IC4A Champion in the 10,000 and 5,000 meters during the 1981 and 1982 seasons, respectively. The former Irish national junior champion and a past member of the Irish National Cross Country Team, Treacy currently resides in Warwick, Rhode Island with his wife, Lisa, and their two sons, Michael and Liam.

Kevin Myles is entering his second season at Providence College where he serves as the Head Men's Track Coach and the Assistant Coach of the cross country and women's track teams. In his first season with the Friars, Myles helped guide both the men’s and women’s cross country programs to berths in the NCAA Championship, continuing a remarkable trend: both pro-gram’s have advanced to their sport’s highest stage in 14 of the

last 15 seasons, while the women’s team has landed there a record 22 consecu-tive seasons. Indoors, Myles contributed to the coaching of four All-Americans. Junior David McCarthy earned first team All-American status in the men’s 3000-meters, junior Julian Matthews gained Second-Team honors in the men’s 1500-meters, and sophomore Shelby Greany and junior Hannah Davidson achieved Second-Team accolades in the wom-en’s 3000. Matthews later matched his Second-Team accomplishment outdoors, again in the 1500. Before Providence, Myles served as an Assistant Coach for Brown University's Cross Country / Track and Field programs from 2007-2010. On the East Side, he oversaw the training for the men's distance and mid-distance runners. Myles was a 2001 graduate of LaSalle University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. As a five-year member of cross country/track & field team, Myles was a nine-time All-Conference member, a five-time All District team member, and a 1998 NCAA in-dividual qualifier in cross country. Myles was a member of LaSalle's 1999 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championship team, and was also selected as a 1999 Academic All-American. In 2001, he was selected as the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year.

2011-12 MEN'S OUTLOOK

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRYThe men’s cross country team is return-

ing virtually the same squad that placed third in the BIG EAST and 22nd in the nation in 2010, and welcoming several key additions, to give the coaching staff one of the deepest Friar teams in the last several years.

Senior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) will be looking to carry over momentum from an outstanding junior campaign. Carey captured the program’s 11th individual BIG EAST cross country title, completing the eight-kilometer race, held October 30, 2010 in Jamesville, N.Y., in a time of 24:56.8. His post was a solid eight and a half seconds ahead of the second place har-rier.

After placing second at the NCAA North-east Regionals two weeks later, Carey earned his first team All-America honors by placing 24th at the 2010 NCAA Championships.

Senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) also returns after a respectable, 55th placing at the NCAA Championships and fifth-place finish, just behind Carey, at the NCAA Northeast Regional.

Channon's Countryman and classmate Ju-lian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand), will look to capitalize on tremendous track success a year ago, when he broke four minutes in the mile (3:58.57) and earned Second Team All-America status both indoors and outdoors.

Senior sub-four-minute miler David Mc-Carthy (Waterford, Ireland) will return to the team after redshirting last season. McCarthy earned All-America honors in 2009 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and repeated the feat last season indoors.

The quartet will be joined by returning vet-erans in junior Eric Malnati (Walpole, N.H.), se-nior Matt Terry (Danbury, Conn.), junior Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) and sophomore Frances Her-nandez (Windham, N.H.).

Also expected to play a key role are incom-ing freshmen Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) and Ben Connor (Derby, England). Quinn placed 12th at the European Cross Country Champion-ships in the Junior Men’s race and is the 2011 Irish Junior Cross Country Champion. Connor competed for the British Junior team at the World Cross Country Championships, placing 67th.

CROSS COUNTRY & TRACK - 7

MEN'S TRACK & FIELDThe goal, as always, for the 2011-12 men's track seasons is to qualify

as many athletes as possible for the Big East, NCAA East Regional and NCAA Championships. In 2011, the indoor season saw two of the men qual-ify for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

One was senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand), who ran a blistering, 3:58.57 mile at the BU Valentine Invitational. Matthews will be returning, once again focusing on the mile. Senior David McCarthy (Water-ford, Ireland) will be joining him after an eighth place finished at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 3,000 meters. He, too, ran at the Big East In-door Championships, placing second in the 5,000 meters event.

Teammate and fellow senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zea-land), will be back to compete for the Friars in the mile and will look to break the sub-four-minute barrier. In the 2011 season, Channon barely missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships, coming close to a sub 4-minute mile while running at the NCAA Last Chance Meet, placing first in 4:00.30. Sophomore Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand), sophomore Frances Hernandez (Windham, N.H.) and junior Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) are also among the men that will be returning to compete during the indoor season.

Outdoors, both Matthews and McCarthy qualified for the 2011 NCAA East Regional Outdoor Championships and will look to improve on their placing and personal bests. McCarthy recorded a time of 14:04.04 in the 5,000 meters at the Mt. Sac Relays before placing fourth in the Big East 1,500 meters just behind Matthews. Matthews will look to repeat his great 2011 outdoor season after running a personal best of 3:41.72 in the Invita-tional Elite 1,500 meters at the Mt. Sac Relays. His 12th place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the Men’s 1,500 meters sets a high expectation to finish even better in 2012.

Wallace, who made great strides in both indoor and outdoor track, finishing 31st in a time of 3:48.01 at the Mt. Sac Relay Men’s 1,500 meters and 11th in the Big East 1,500 meters race, will look to focus on this same event this season. Teammate Ali also will be returning after a solid run at the Mt. Sac Relays, finishing the 10,000 meters men’s race in a time of 30:22.29.

Channon will be focusing on the 5,000 meters, after red-shirting last spring, while sophomore Jonathan Hopkins (Brigend, Wales) will be focus-ing in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. Incoming freshmen that should contribute to the team will be Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland), who has run 8:15 in the 3,000 meters and 14:26 in the 5,000 meters, as well as Ben Connor (Derby, England) running 8:24 and 14:42 in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters, respectively. Freshman Liam Hillary (Smithfield, R.I.), who recorded a time of 8:28 in the 3,000 meters at the Rhode Island State Meet, also will be a valuable addition to the team.

2011-12 MEN'S OUTLOOK

Julian Matthews '12 was a two-time Second-Team All-American in 2011.

David McCarthy '12 Earned First-Team All-America honors indoors in 2011.

18 - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS

2011-12 WOMEN'S OUTLOOK

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRYWhat was a young women’s cross country

team in 2010 will now be a more experienced and stronger squad coming into the 2011 season. With a ninth-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships and six of the top seven returning from 2010, the Friars will look to place in the top five in the country. As evidence, the Friars entered the new season ranked third in the nation, according to U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s preseason poll.

Three All-Americans, senior Hannah David-son (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), junior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) and sophomore transfer Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) will lead the Friars this year. Davidson was an All-American in 2009 when she placed 37th at the NCAA Championships. As a sophomore, Greany became a Cross Country All-American with an outstanding 12th-place performance at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships and a third place effort at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. In 2010, Greany competed at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland as a member of the American Junior team, finishing 29th. Sisson, competed last season for the University of Wisconsin and has since joined the Providence community. Sisson led the Badgers to the Big Ten, NCAA Regional and NCAA team titles during her one season of competition in 2010. Individually, she placed third at the Big Ten Championship, second at the NCAA Regional Champioship and 14th at the NCAA Championship, which was two spots shy of her current Providence College teammate, Greany.

Other key veterans include senior Mary-Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.), who finished 51st at the NCAA Champion-ship, senior Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll (Dublin, Ireland), junior Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) and sophomore Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand).

Further enhancing the team is sophomore Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia), who also competed at the 2010 World Cross Country Championships as a member of the Australian Junior Team. Thek is the Australian Junior Cross Country Champion.

It is a deep and veteran laden group of Friars who will take the course this Fall, one that will look to be one of the strongest in the nation.

2011-12 WOMEN'S OUTLOOK

WOMEN'S TRACKAs with the cross country contingent, the women’s track

team looks to be very strong this year, returning all of its top plac-ing athletes from 2010-11. Indoors, senior Hannah Davidson will be returning to compete in the 5,000 meters and 3,000 meters. Davidson highlighted her junior campaign by recording a time of 9:12.53 in the 3000 meters event at the NCAA Last Chance meet, allowing her to qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships, where she finished in 14th.

The 2011 season saw Davidson go on to run 5,000 me-ters at the Mt. Sac Relays in California, placing 18th in a time of 16:20.37. Davidson will be focusing on the 3,000 meter steeplechase event along with returning junior All-American Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.). In the 2010 season, Greany became the American Junior 3,000 meter steeple-chase record holder, finishing 6th at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time 10:00.88. Nagel will also be return-ing to competition outdoors, focusing more on the 5,000 meters and 1,500 meters after placing 6th at the Mt Sac Relays with a personal best in the 1,500 meters of 4:23.23.

Also returning is senior Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll (Dub-lin, Ireland), who finished ninth in the 3,000 meter event at the Big East Championships. In addition, the women’s indoor track team will see debut performances from sophomore Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) who both redshirted a year ago. Carrying on from the indoor season, the outdoor season will see all of these women returning. Ffrench O’Carroll will focus on the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters. In addition to Nagel and Ffrench O’Carroll, the women’s team also have Thek, senior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.), and junior Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) aiming to lower their personal bests in the 5,000-meter event.

As in years passed, the goal for this team is to qualify as many athletes as possible for Big East, NCAA East Regional’s and the NCAA Championships.

52 - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE Responding to the needs of Rhode Island, the Dominican Order of Preachers made a special

commitment to the state in 1917 and founded Providence College — the only institution of higher learning in North America that is conducted by the Order. In 94 years, Providence College has steadily moved to a position of national prominence, while maintaining a personal, community-like atmosphere that fosters growth and development among its student population.

Providence College’s rich heritage dates back to the origins of the Dominican Order in Spain. Through the ages, the Dominican Friars became known as the “champions of the faith,” spreading the gospel message through the centuries into every corner of the globe. Today, Dominican Friars continue to spread the gospel in a wide range of remote areas of the world, to teach at every level

of the United States educational system. With the Dominican tradition as its

foundation, Providence College focuses on developing the entire person through its values-oriented education. The college seeks to complement a student’s knowl-edge with knowledge of his own values — values that will remain the foundation for sound judgement throughout a lifetime.

To that end, Providence College aims to relate its curriculum to the problems of contemporary society, offering diverse programs of study that remain grounded in the liberal arts. Students may choose from some 60 concentrations ranging from computer science to labor relations to theatre arts.

In addition, qualified students who wish to structure a program not specifical-ly provided under the regular concentra-tions may develop their own program with the approval of the dean of the college.

As part of the core curriculum, all students take a two-year, team-taught course, Development of Western Civiliza-tion (DWC) which integrates the study of

literature, philosophy, history and religious studies through the ages into a cohesive interdisciplinary unit.

Situated just on the fringe of downtown Providence, the College’s location enables students to have easy access to the many social, cultural, educational and recreational amenities of urban life - the Providence Public Library; entertainment at the Providence Performing Arts Center; sporting events, entertainment and trade shows at the Dunkin' Donuts Center and the Providence Convention Center, Providence Place Mall and dozens of fine restaurants. With several other major educational institutions located in Providence, the city has become a hub of collegiate activity.

THE MISSION OF THE COLLEGE

Providence College is a primarily undergraduate, liberal arts, Catholic institu-tion of higher education. Committed to fostering academic excellence through the sciences and humanities, the College provides a variety of opportunities for intellectual, social, moral and spiritual growth in a supportive environment.

The College actively cultivates intellectual, spiritual, ethical and aesthetic values within the context of the Judaeo-Christian heritage. These values are nurtured by the unique tradition of the Dominican Order which emphasizes quality teaching and scholarship.

Providence College recognizes the unity of the human family that proceeds from its one Creator. It therefore encourages the deepest respect for the essential dignity, freedom and equality of every person and welcomes qualified women and men from all religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds. Providence College prepares its students to be responsible and productive citizens to serve in their own society and the greater world community.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION

The mission of the Providence College In-tercollegiate Athletics program is to foster the personal development and education of young men and women through their participation in NCAA Division I athletics.

Athletic contests provide an opportunity for the campus and the community at large to demonstrate their support of the College, its athletics program, and the student-athletes.

The Athletic Department strives to fulfill student-athlete needs and goals in an environ-ment steeped in the Dominican tradition in which honesty, integrity, mutual respect, effort and constant improvement are cherished and cultivated.

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION

ROBERT G. DRISCOLL, JR.ATHLETICS DIRECTOR

Since Robert G. Driscoll was hired as the Associate Vice President for Athletics on November 2, 2001, Provi-dence College athletics has experienced unprecedented growth in academic and athletic performance, fundrais-ing, facilities and community involvement. Driscoll has reinvigorated the Providence College Athletics program, leading the charge with a vision of creating one of the most respected programs in the nation, where each student-athlete graduates and has the opportunity to compete for championships. Driscoll was recognized for his efforts on

June 10, 2008 as he was named the 2007-08 Astro Turf Athletics Director of the Year for Division I Northeast Region at the 43rd National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Annual Convention. He also was honored in 2009 by his alma mater, Ithaca College, where he received the Distinguished Sport Industry Leader award during alumni weekend. Most recently, he was elected as Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association Secretary.

Athletically, Providence experienced success in 2010-11. The men’s soccer team earned its way to the championship match of the BIG EAST Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Friars played their first home NCAA Championship game and posted a 6-2 win over Saint Peter’s to advance to the Second Round for the second time in school history. The women’s cross country team qualified for the NCAA Championship for the 22nd consecutive season and placed in the top-10 (ninth) for the 17th time in school history. The men’s team also earned a berth to the NCAA Championship, its fifth consecutive appearance and 15th in the last 16 years. There were eight Friars crowned All-Americans. Marshon Brooks became the first PC basketball player to be named to the Associated Press All-America Team since Ryan Gomes in 2004. Brooks also set the BIG EAST single-game and single-season scoring records. Lee Carey, who led the men’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship by capturing the individual title, also earned All-America accolades. Shelby Greany was crowned All-American twice (cross country and indoor track – 3,000 meters). Hannah Davidson also was named All-American as she ran the 3,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships. Julian Matthews garnered two All-America honors (indoor track – mile, outdoor track – 1,500 meters). David McCarthy rounded out the list of All-Americans as he earned the honor in the indoor 3,000 meters. In addition, Providence College finished seventh out of 95 Division I-AAA schools in the 2010-11 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup.

The College recently approved renovation plans for Alumni Hall, which is the practice facility for men’s basketball and home courts for women’s basketball and vol-leyball. Construction will begin in the spring of 2012. In addition, the College gained approval for a state-of-the-art soccer, lacrosse and track athletic complex adjacent to Schneider Arena, which also will be renovated. Included in this complex will be a 30,000 square-foot facility connected to Schneider Arena which will house locker rooms and other facilities for athletic teams. The College also will build a new softball complex and tennis courts on Hendricken Field.

In addition to the upcoming renovations to Alumni Hall and Schneider Arena as well as the state-of-the art soccer and lacrosse complex, there have been numerous other facility improvements in Alumni Hall. The men’s basketball offices, hallway and locker rooms were renovated, thanks to a generous gift from Providence College alumnus Joe Calabria ‘65. The Joe Calabria Hallway of Legends was dedicated in January of 2009. Consisting of nine exhibit areas and seven display cases, the hallway features players and teams from each era of the Providence College basketball program. The hallway's floor is a replica of the Friars' Dave Gavitt Court at the Dunkin' Donuts Center and the project also includes a complete renovation of the coaches’ offices, the film room and the team's locker room.

The men’s soccer program received a generous donation from John Murphy ‘80 and renovated the soccer offices. The Joyce Murphy Soccer Suite opened in Novem-ber of 2008. The suite features new offices, meeting spaces and a lounge area equipped with flat screen televisions. The men’s soccer locker room also was refurbished thanks to a donation by Kerry and Karl Anderson ‘87. With the creation of the BIG EAST Lacrosse Conference, the lacrosse offices were renovated to go along with a new locker room. The volleyball locker room also was renovated and a new women’s basketball video room was created. In addition, the track/cross country offices and the women’s soccer offices also were refurbished. The Helen Bert Student-Athlete Study Lounge, which was opened in 2007, was recently expanded. Thanks to a generous donation from Judge Bill Leary ’60 and his wife, Emily, the Friends of Friar Hockey Room also was renovated at Schneider Arena. The Bill and Emily Leary Friends of Friar Room includes plasma televisions, high-top counters and meeting space for the teams. In addition, a media library room displaying the history of Friar Hockey was made possible thanks to a generous gift from Bob O’Connor ’62.

In August of 2007, the Concannon Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art $18 million facility, was opened. The Concannon Fitness Center is adjacent to the $6 million Lennon Family Field (Astroturf facility), which was completed in August 2005. The Fitness Center houses the Friars’ Jimmy Walker Strength and Conditioning Center as well as administrative and coaching offices, conference rooms and locker rooms. The construction project also provides the department with a state-of-the-art sports medicine complex and a new ticket office. The Canavan Sports Medicine Center, which was completed in August of 2008, is equipped with a hydrotherapy room, which includes a SwimEx rehab pool and two plunges for cold/hot therapy.
