The Children’s Hospital at Albany Med Tina Bottini

MISSION OF THE MONTH"...love your neighbor as yourself." Matthew 22:39

This month the Day Care and Community Re-

formed will be working together on April’s Mis-sion of the Month  to benefit the Children’sHospital at Albany Medical Center.

Two stories of young people associated with thiscongregation tell us why this mission is so im-

portant.

Sarah and Bert Huiest write about their son Alexander:

Since birth, our son, Alexander, has faced manyserious gastrointestinal challenges. At 9months of age, his condition reached a crisisstate. He was rapidly losing weight, in greatpain and became listless.

He was then referred to a Pediatric Gastroen-terologist at Albany Medical Center Children’sHospital. As they worked to evaluate his condi-tion, Alexander had to undergo general anes-thesia for a surgical procedure.

They then were able to administer his initialmedications in a playroom environment wherehe was completely unaware of the medical staff and was very much at ease. As many of youknow, Alexander’s struggles are far from over.

As parents, many of our anxieties were allevi-

ated by the staff and child-friendly environment

of Albany Med’s Children’s Hospital. We aretruly blessed to have a facility so close to home.

Laurie Boisvert, a Day Care teacher, and her husband Roger tell of their daughter Christina:

Christina, having just made the Varsity CheerTeam, and starting to plan her Sweet Sixteenparty, was on top of the world.

On November 15th 2010 we went to the pediatri-

cian for what we thought was a torn muscle

We were told it wasn’t a muscle tear and wersent directly to the Children’s Hospital at AlbanMed.

We later learned it was a blood clot the lengtof her leg. Christina was rushed into the first o

what would be four surgical procedures. Haany piece of the clot broken off and traveled tChristina’s heart or lung, she would not be witus today.

The care she received at Albany Med was absolutely second to none and is the reason for hecomplete recovery. The Staff is unbelievablkind, caring and compassionate, and their professionalism and knowledge is amazing.

AMC is a teaching hospital, with many medica

students, residents, nursing students and othestaff assigned to young patients.

So it is with these two stories, and those omany other children of whom we may nevehear, that Community Reformed and ColoniCommunity Day Care are adopting Albany Med

cal Center Children’s Hospital as April’s Missioof the Month.

Let’s get out our pennies and fill the jar on thback table.

In addition, please make a pledge to one of thDay Care Children for their walk around ouvery own bike track which will take place oApril 29th.

Even better, join us for our walk to benefit AMCIf you would like to see what the Day Care is aabout, this is your perfect opportunity.

In coordination with this Mission of the Monththe pillowcases made on April 2 will likewisbenefit the children at Albany Med.

Going Green at Work

Green living isn't just for home. You can follow a fewsimple suggestions and make your workplace moreenvironmentally friendly, as well.

Reduce paper. When printing, use both sides of a piece of paper in order to conserve. Keep ascrap paper pile for misprinted or unnecessary documents to either print on or write on. Try to re-

use envelopes as many times as possible to cut down on waste. Also, consider purchasing a meshor cloth coffee filter as opposed to disposable paper filters.

Reduce your waste. Bring your own coffee cup or water bottle to work to avoid buying Styrofoam orpaper cups and throwing them away every day. Also, bring your lunch in a reusable containerrather than a disposable paper bag. Lastly, make sure your company has an easy-to-use recyclingprogram and that everyone is educated on how it works.

Be conscious of your supplies. Some office supplies are better for the environment than others; forexample, try to use paperclips rather than adhesive tape, and use crayons or colored pencils in-stead of solvent-based markers. Consider refillable pens and mechanical pencils rather than disposable ones.

Good Friday WorshipTenebrae

April 22nd

at 7:30 PMTenebrae, or "Service of Shadows," is one of the oldest traditions in theChristian church for the commemoration of the passion and death of Christ.

Through scripture readings and hymns the story of Christ's betrayal, triaand crucifixion is told. As the Passion story unfolds, candles are removedsymbolizing the fleeing of the disciples. The darkness deepens, until only theChrist Candle remains. This light is removed from the sanctuary representing Christ's crucifixion and death. The Light of our Church returns in glorEaster morning.

Due to the somber intensity of this service, child care is provided for children 2nd grade

and younger.

Called to ServeSpecial to Sunday worship at Community Reformed is the Elders’ and Dea

cons’ prayers. Elders and Deacons

have distinct functions in the life andwork of a congregation, these aremanifested in their prayers.

In the Reformed Church, leadership isshared among the Minister, Elders andDeacons. Thus, our Elders and Deaconstake a very active role in our worship.

Elders are those who have care over thespiritual concerns of a congregation

They ―oversee the household of faith andencourage spiritual growth.‖ They ensure that the Word of God is preachedand that the sacraments are provided.

This special focus is reflected in the Elders’ ―Prayer for the People.‖ They prayfor the spiritual condition of the peopleof our church, for our leaders, and foour families who are in need of speciacare, such as those who are sick.

Deacons are charged with overseeing thechurch’s service and outreach beyond thechurch walls. They receive our offeringand distribute them. They minister tothe needy and poor of our communityand the world. Their focus is on the concerns of the world around us.

As you listen to the Deacons’ ―Prayefor the World‖ you will note their specia

focus. They pray for those in distress

for the poor and victimized, the homeless, for other nations, and for peaceand freedom around the world. That’s

why their prayers are often about recent world events or catastrophes.

In general, our Elders and Deaconscompose their own Sunday prayers. Itakes time and diligence. It’s one important gift among many that theybring to our congregation.

GO RED! SUNDAYENCOURAGES HEART HEALTH AWARENESS

April Prayer of the Month

If you were not risen,

Lord Christ, to whom would we go

to discover a radianceof the face of God?

If you were not risen,

we would not be together

seeking your communion.

We would not find in your presence

forgiveness,

wellspring of a new beginning.

If you were not risen, where would we draw the energy

for following you

right to the end of our existence,

for choosing you again and anew?
