MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR & RESEARCH CHAIR If you are reading this, you are part of our community: the community of people who work, volunteer through, donate to, sit on the boards of, benefit from, and appreciate the important work conducted at the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH). Thank you for supporting CROSH. This is an exciting time for CROSH. Since its inception in 2008 CROSH has continued to expand; both in membership, staff and infrastructure. Beginning in August 2016, CROSH welcomed Marianne Matichuk as the Chief Administrative Officer. Marianne comes highly regarded in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) field, and her experience will further strengthen CROSH’s mandate. CROSH has also expanded to include more members with recent tallies at 21 undergraduate students, 31 graduate students, and 29 faculty members. CROSH has also secured space for the installation of a Workplace Simulator in the Cliff-Fielding Research Engineering and Innovation building currently under construction on the Laurentian University campus (scheduled to be fully operational by September, 2018). We are also excited to celebrate the official opening of CROSH’s Mobile Research Lab (M-CROSH). M-CROSH is a custom-built, 40-foot truck, which will support field research in mental health, fatigue, sleep, heat stress, vibration, mobile equipment ergonomics, and occupational health and safety in general. We have also been working to address the strategic objectives for the funding we received from the Ministry of Labour in June 2016; $492K. In the summer of 2016, CROSH began hosting weekly, student-led presentations discussing various OHS topics, called: CRafé. Over the last year 26 CRafé sessions were hosted with two sessions live-streamed and eight invited industry experts presenting. CROSH also launched a monthly webinar series, which will continue again in the fall of 2017. Both community initiatives leverage the involvement of our members to create synergies and address Knowledge-Transfer-Exchange opportunities. This past year has also seen the creation of our new website (crosh.ca); to enhance CROSH’s communication with all stakeholders. We invite you to take some time to visit our website and learn more about our research, upcoming events, future webinar topics, and M-CROSH. Even better, we encourage you to visit our CROSH laboratory in person, to meet our students and faculty and be inspired by the innovation, ambition, and creativity you will find here. As another year at CROSH comes to a close we would like to thank members of the CROSH Advisory Board and Executive Committee for their dedication and leadership with CROSH. We would also like to thank all our members for their contribution to OHS scholarship. It is your collective creativity, innovation, and passion that positions CROSH to Drive Prevention Through Research. Sandra Dorman, PhD Tammy Eger, PhD Director Research Chair

The Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health was established in 2008 by Laurentian

University to provide a formalized structure for industry, safe workplace associations, labour groups,

government organizations and researchers to share workplace injury & disease problems and solutions.

CROSH embodies a FIELD- to LAB-to FIELD (F2L2F) research philosophy with the goal of achieving

PREVENTION THROUGH RESEARCH. Through community consultation and engagement, CROSH

researchers identify critical research questions. We engage in innovative FIELD research to understand the

problem, develop evidence-based interventions in the LAB and evaluate the interventions in the FIELD.

We envision a northern Ontario where workplaces join together to ensure that each worker gets home safe

and healthy every day.

"Understanding the effects of occupational disease/illness is in an integral part of my research, and CROSH provides me the

opportunity to see first-hand what workers with vibration-induced injuries are going through in northern Ontario. CROSH has given me the knowledge and experience to relate my PhD

research back to the workers."

“My CROSH internship allowed me to expand my research beyond

my own thesis, engage with industry partners, and gain both

field and lab experience.”

“CROSH has taught me to connect local, northern Ontario research to

challenges faced globally, within the field of occupational health and safety.”

“My experience as the CROSH Graduate Teaching Assistant has been invaluable in

strengthening my Knowledge-Transfer/Exchange skills, and has allowed me

to use creativity and innovation to support CROSH student development and learning.”

Experts at the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH) in Sudbury want to hear about health and safety issues from workers in rural and remote areas of Ontario. Next month the research facility at Laurentian University will launch a mobile unit meant to travel across the province. The large vehicle will act as a portable laboratory for any of the 40 multidisciplinary researchers at CROSH, says Director Sandra Dorman. They'll gather information from workplaces outside of Sudbury, where most of the studies and experiments currently are conducted. "We've got the home lab where we can bring ideas back and test them out, but the mobile lab allows us to get the information in the field, bring it back to the lab for testing and then go back to the field, to ensure that the new ideas actually work," says Dorman. The traveling lab will allow CROSH researchers to determine what particular health and safety issues are affecting workers in rural and remote locations. In turn, the experts and scientists can find solutions to those problems. Dorman says the mobile unit will allow researchers with CROSH to access workplaces that have principally been ignored because of their geography. Workers will have a voice. "Even just getting a chance to talk to workers that are

outside the 2 or 3 hours radius of Sudbury, " says Tammy Eger, the Research Chair for CROSH. "We want to hear what are the issues up in Fort Frances, in Kirkland Lake, in Kenora, in Sioux Lookout, Timmins, Chapleau. That's the idea, they'll have a voice." Eger added that a voice for workers is important. "You want people to have an opportunity to speak and let [researchers] know what their issues are, so we can help to be a part of the solution." There will always be at least one research technician managing the lab when it's on the road. There may also be a team of researchers on the vehicle depending on what topic is being studied at the time. Eger says the mobile unit could support research projects that focus on mental health, fatigue in the workplace, heat stress or anything from an occupational health and safety perspective. This is the only portable lab of its kind in Canada, devoted to occupational health and safety research. The CROSH mobile research unit will officially open June 28. Eger says the portable lab will likely travel over northern Ontario during an official tour launch in the fall.
