Urban gardens have become increas-ingly important as city dwellers seek tobeautify their homes and neighborhoodsand regain a closer connection to their en-vironment and food source. CrockerPark’s newest project, the Mange, subur-ban garden at Crocker Park, promises tonot only promote environmental aware-ness, but give back to the community aswell. The name ‘Mange’ comes from theFrench verb “to eat.”

Crocker Park will be involved in car-ing for the garden, consisting of twenty-four raised beds constructed of cedar andcomposed of an organic blend of sweetpeat, humus, and soil. Raised beds werechosen because they keep soil warmer, provide better drainage, and require lessmaintenance than traditional gardens. Thearea will be handpainted by a local artistto create more color in the garden. KristaHermes, the manager of Crocker Park’sGrounds department, recently built andinstalled the boxes, and planting is slated

to begin May 15. Hermes will tend to theMange and work closely with CrockerPark’s residents, staff, and workers tocoordinate weekend involvement, whowill help weed, till, and harvest.

Sunflowers will be planted aroundthe perimeter of the Mange to promotebeneficial insects and provide natural pestcontrol. Beauty will not be sacrificed forutility in the Mange—a variety of edibleswill be produced that are as pretty as theyare tasty. “We’re planting a little bit ofeverything,” said Hermes, from tomatoesto peppers and other vegetables. “Thegoal is to give everything back to the com-munity,” she continued. Crocker Parkwill donate all produce to a local organi-zation in the Greater Cleveland area.

Crocker Park’s venture into suburbanagriculture, the Mange, is a unique wayto bring neighbors, staff, and store work-ers together to engage in both the envi-ronment and community. Contact CrockerPark Management for further details.

From deli corned beef to a retro-diner, Karl Abounader is covering all thegreat food bases this summer!

Everyone knows Karl and his boys(along with mom Marcelle) from theirfriendly Karl’s Corned Beef & More Pa-vilion at Crocker Park.

Karl’s to Open Diner 254 in Sheffield!Last summer, the gang added Auntie

Anne’s Pretzels at the stand next door. They are knocking them dead with freshbaked wholesome snacks, and great hotdogs kids will love!

Now Karl is moving even further west!A June opening of Diner 254 is planned next

door to Quaker Steak and Lube at the De-troit Road exit along I-90 in Lorain County.

Karl’s son, Mike Abounader is Gen-eral Manager and is excited about thegreat retro look and 50’s motif of the clas-sic chrome and red leather diner

Karl took over the diner in April andinherited fun red and silver furniture, metalwalls, black and white checkered floor and50’s and 60’s art. All that will stay, addingto the cruise-in magnetism of the diner.

The menu? You guessed it: burgers,open-face sandwiches, pierogies, rootbeer floats and milk shakes. Anyone forfried Twinkies? Breakfast, lunch and din-ner too! Fresh cut French fries! Andhomemade specials and soups, too!

Karl Abounader has gained a great

reputation as a leading Cleveland restau-rateur with his Karl’s Inn of the Barris-ters in Downtown Cleveland. BringingKarl’s Corned Beef and More to CrockerPark two years ago, both restaurants areknown for quality.

“The opportunity came about andwe’ve been looking to set up a sit-downrestaurant that has our type of food witha diner feel,” Abounader said of Diner254. “We want to change the signage (out-side) and add some TVs. We want to makethis place feel like home.”

The diner will be open from 7 a.m.to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 7a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdaysand Sundays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It usedto be Sammy’s Diner.

Sharon Spry • Hand-crafted jewelry“We want the guests to have a very fun and en-

joyable time and that they will learn something aboutthe art and the way each artists makes their work andhow they work. You know, that everyone just enjoysthe uniqueness of the art fair.”

“A lot of the art is narrative and whimsical, wehope that people comeaway from the booth smil-ing and feeling better. That they get a little kickout of our booth.”

“Our designs are al-most always themed. Wehave planet earth, wehave cats and dogs, wehave galaxy, we have palmtree earrings that aredone with gemstones.Real... very different.”

Mike Guyot • Freehand ink drawings“I’d like for new people to come away with a

new sense of what original art is. It’s not a poster,it’s not something that everybody else can get. It’s one-of-a-kind and, for most of the artists I’vemet on tour, it’s from their heart.”

“I really love what I do and I love what I see. Ido a lot of bricks and architecture but I used to draweverything realistic, very realistic and an art teacher

back in Bostonslapped me on theback of the headand said ‘Lightenup! You’re not your grandfather!’ My grandfather was aSwiss money plate engraver, so I used think everythinghad to be exact. So he got me to lighten up and to justdraw what I see. And I do each brick one at a time and it’s very... some people have said it’swhimsical. I don’t know, I look at things differently now.”
