The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s The Heart Truth®

campaign is proud to have Jimmy Beans Wool and its inspiring campaignStitch Red, which raises awareness of women’s heart disease, as apartner. Our programs share a common goal: to educate women aboutthe risk factors for heart disease and encourage them to take actionto protect their heart health.

Stitch Red’s mission parallels that of The Heart Truth: to give women apersonal and urgent wake-up call about their number-one killer—heartdisease. The Heart Truth, along with its partners, empowers womento make a commitment to managing their potential risk for heartdisease. Although a woman’s risk increases between the ages of fortyand sixty, heart disease can affect women of any age—so it’s never toosoon or too late to take action for a healthy heart.

Our hope is that you’ll be inspired to share the Heart Truth® messagewith friends, family, and fellow crafters, so they become motivated tostart making healthy changes in their daily lives. Help each other takethe first steps toward a healthy diet: not smoking, getting regular physicalactivity, and maintaining a healthy weight. Reaching your goal of ahealthy lifestyle will help protect your heart for a lifetime.

We thank you for your continued support anddedication to women’s heart health!

KATHY’S STORYKathy Merrick wanted to bean artist when she grew up, achildhood aspiration that turnedout quite accurate. With a greateye for color, Kathy createsstunning works of art using yarnas her canvas. Because of theway she collects different yarnsand weaves them together instriking and often daring colorcombinations, Kathy jokinglycalls herself a magpie—she’snot afraid to play withseemingly mismatched shadesand is attracted to brightcolors that others might shyaway from. Her adventurousstyle and deftness with colorinspired a spectacular book,Crochet in Color:Techniques andDesigns for Playing with Color. That’s exactly what Kathyencourages crocheters to do:play! She loves to teach othersto find inspiration andexperiment with color in theircrafting. Kathy’s father sufferedfrom rheumatic fever as achild, which later led to heartdisease; his struggle inspiredher to get on board with theStitch Red campaign.

Page 22: Crochet Red

Crochet Red is my third book to be published, and if I havelearned anything, it would be that authoring books does notget easier the more you publish. Each volume is a uniquejourney with its own challenges and rewards, and I amextremely grateful to have had the support of so manyincredible individuals throughout the course of creating theStitch Red books. Knit Red, Sew Red, and now Crochet Redhave all given me the opportunity to collaborate withtalented designers, exceptional yarn companies, and thewonderful staff at Sixth&Spring Books; I am honored to havehad the pleasure of working with all of you to createsomething so meaningful and close to my heart.

I offer an extra-special thank you to the following individualswho went above and beyond and were integral in makingCrochet Red the book you are holding in your hands, a bookwe are all so proud of.

Leanne Spinazola, for jumping in at the last minute withouthesitation.Thank you for keeping so many details organized, for researching, writing, and editing (Heather Boyd, too!), forturning my random thoughts into intelligible sentences . . . andfor simply being LeAwesome.

Rose Callahan, for being the best photographer in the world.Your pictures bring the Stitch Red books to life, and it isbecause of you and super-talented stylist Khaliah Jones thatthey are so successful.

Kaity Ocean, for working tirelessly to make this Stitch Redcampaign everything it is today. You have poured your heartand soul (and a few glasses of red wine!) into this project . . .and it shows!

I would like to reiterate a most sincere thank you to all thedesigners and yarn companies who so selflessly dedicatedtheir time and energy to this project.Without yourenthusiasm, creativity, and passion, Crochet Red would nothave become an exceptional resource, and I am truly gratefulto have you as part of this book. If we can get just oneperson to pay better attention to heart health as a result ofour efforts, we have succeeded.Together.

Last but certainly not least, I want to give a heartfelt thanksto the people in my day-to-day life who cheered me onthrough this endeavor: my family and friends at Jimmy BeansWool. Both the staff members and the customers of theBiggest LittleYarn Shop in Reno are a constant source ofinspiration, technical expertise, moral support, and just plainfun.Thank you all for being the bedrock underneath thismountain we’re building together.
