BREGOVSKA PITA (8-layer filo pie)

Dough:40 dg smooth floura pinch of salt4 tablespoons of butter1 egglukewarm water if necesarryKnead smooth dough and divide into 8

balls to make 8 layers and leave it to rest for about half hour.

Filling:20 dg ground walnuts25 dg raisins40 dg sugarlittle bit of cinnamon20 dg melted butter8-9 sour apples – peeled and cut into

thin slices.2 dcl cream mixed with one whole eggGrease the pan with butter and put in

thinly stretched

1 layer of dough - put the apple slices on it, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon, pour with 3 tablespoons melted butter. Then put

2 layer - sprinkle with walnuts, sugar, pour with melted butter and sprinkle with cream.

3 layer - sprinkle with raisins, sugar, pour with butter and sprinkle with cream

4 layer- all over again - apples, sugar, cinnamon and butter

5 layer - walnuts,sugar,melted butter and cream

6 layer - raisins, sugar, butter and cream

7 layer - apples, sugar, cinnamon and butter

8 layer - put the dough on the top and cover it with cream

Before baking pierce the top layer with a fork in several places. Put the pie to bake on 2000C for about 45 minutes. When it is baked, leave it to cool down a bit, cut into cubes and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Bregovska pita - intangible cultural heritage of Croatia

There is a 200 year-old holiday tradition in Koprivnički Bregi. Each Christmas, Ester and Saint Roch Day (16 August) a special cake Bregovska pita is prepared. Nowadays it is still prepared following the old recipe which is typical for this village. The recipe has been passed down from generation to generation among women in families by word of mouth.

On 29 May 2012 Croatian Ministry of Culture brought a resolution according which Bregovska pita is now placed on the list of Croatian intangible cultural heritage.
