Barefoot walking is loaded with health benefits but as a town-dwelling tenderfoot I’ve been reluctant to doff my foot-wear. Now that the weather has warmed up I was out of excuses, and on my way to an out-of-town trail that I hoped would have less dog-doo. Slipping off of my sandals, I stepped onto a gravel path that felt poky and rough. I noticed right away that I walked differently barefoot, paying more attention to where I placed my feet and landing the ball of my foot before the toes. “Gingerly” might be the word for it.

2 || NORTH ISLANDER || TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 2014 LIVING

I almost couldn’t quite believe it when the close of business last Fri-day (20/06) came and went and still the 2014 Salmon Integrated Fish-eries Management Plan had not been released. I’m not sure when the latest-ever date for this annual release is but we must be in record territory now.

Contained within the IFMP will be the all-important decision on the allowable exploitation rate on the Interior Fraser coho stock aggregate, and undoubtedly it this decision that is causing the delay for the entire plan, which will pot-entially contain some important changes for management of chi-nook salmon in the Strait of Geor-gia recreational fishery. A change after 17 years of a constant regime is unquestionably a major one but it’s not that complicated, certainly not the proverbial rocket science, so it is a bit hard to understand what the hold up can be.

Trust me when I say that months ago all fishing interests in south-ern BC stressed at every available opportunity to Ottawa staff, up to and including the minister her-self, the need to have this decision announced in a timely fashion but I’m not sure that after the summer solstice qualifies. Meanwhile the “big wait” continues…

Last week the coho showed up in numbers at the very top end of the Strait of Georgia near Camp-bell River, around the bottom end of Quadra Island. The timing was remarkable, within only a couple of days of them arriving in 2013, although this is likely just a coinci-dence. What was different this year is there was some expectation within the local angling com-munity that coho would be present in the fishery for the second year in a row, based on persistent reports of their presence further south, from Comox on down to Nanaimo. Last year was almost a com-plete surprise, this year not so much.

Because so many anglers and guides in the Campbell River area are now using larger plugs for their chi-nook fishing, it is likely that more coho would have been encountered a little sooner had smaller lures been used, but no matter. As always the

interesting thing will be to see what the overall abundance of coho in inside waters is and how long they stay around any given location.

As things stand, based on reports from around much of the strait over the past few months, the pre-season forecast of a “weak inside” distribution of coho in southern BC doesn’t seem to be holding up. Not that I blame the authors of the fore-cast, nature is after all highly vari-able and, more to the point, given the paucity of resources provided by the current federal government for this kind of vital research, I’m confident they did the best with what they had to work with.

The public should understand that the budget for DFO continues to get smaller all the time and is expected to diminish further yet until proper management of the fishery resource and the fisheries dependent on it assume a higher priority in the mindset of the Harp-er government. And as discussed here several months ago, in this time of constrained resources coho rank a distant third behind sockeye and chinook salmon in the hier-archy of importance when it comes to allocation of funds for activities like stock assessment.

While on the topic of initiatives from Ottawa, there’s short-term glitch coming soon in the avail-ability of tidal waters recreational licenses, which of course are now available only via the internet. Take note please – the server that facilitates the e-sale of the licenses will be closed on June 28 - a Satur-day of course - from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., possibly longer, to allow for some maintenance and upgrade work.

Because this is all run from the nation’s capital, with zero under-standing of the needs of the fishery here on the west coast, the shut down was originally scheduled to be longer and to occur right in the

middle of the Family Fishing week-end! Only the robust intervention of some Pacific Region DFO staff averted what could have been a real mess, but all thoughts of doing this kind of work in, say, November were rejected.

Elsewhere, some welcome news from the Fraser River for the troubled stock of stream-type chi-nooks. These are chinook salmon that have a freshwater life history very similar to coho, spending a year or more in the river after emerging from the gravel as fry before migrating to the sea. There are over 50 individual river stocks of these stream-type chinook in the Fraser watershed, comprising of two dominant ages at maturity, four and five years old, and two dis-tinct run-timing (entry into fresh-water) groups, spring and early summer.

For the most part these fish have an unusual ocean migration, mov-ing off the continental shelf out into the open ocean much like sock-eye, pinks, chums and steelhead, although likely not quite as far ranging. In truth not a lot is known about these fish at sea because of the near absence of resources for open water research (see above).

Anyway, this chinook stock aggre-gate has been at a low-level of abundance for a number of years, resulting in significant restraints to a number of fisheries, notably the recreational fishery around the southern end of Vancouver Island across to the Fraser estuary and in the river itself. Trust me, you wouldn’t want these restrictions in your neighbourhood.

For a number of years DFO has been managing these fish with a three-zone approach, and based on the latest test fishing informa-tion from the lower Fraser the 2014 return has moved into the middle or moderate zone (45,000 or more) for the first time in several years.

See in store for details.

Given that these chinook are not encountered in fisheries until their return migration this indicates an upturn in marine survival for them, which is very welcome news to every-one in whose waters these fish are found - fin-gers crossed it continues!

Knowing Nature from page 1.water therapies, or hydrotherapy, but also encouraged patients to seek balance of life through a healthy diet, exercise and herbal remedies. Kneipp believed in walking barefoot as much as possible and advised a “dew walk” first thing in the morning to aid circulation, calm the nervous system, boost immun-ity and provide relief for headaches. In Germany today there are many Kneipp spas that still follow many of his practi-ces, and barefoot walking is still known by many as “Kneippen.”

Kneipp may have been instrumental in bringing barefoot walking to the attention of the western world, but the practice is actually much older. Chinese reflexology, dating back thousands of years, stems from the belief that reflex points in the hands and feet are con-nected to every part, organ and gland of the body. Practices similar to reflex-ology have been discovered from many cultures around the globe, including ancient Egypt.

At the other side of the river I sank ankle-deep into wet granular sand, and hopped into some smooth, light dry sand. Then I re-forded the river and dried my feet on some sunbaked boulders. I played around making wet footprints on the rocks and watched my prints magically fade and disappear in the sun’s heat. My feet relayed the sim-

ple messages: cold water, hot stone. On the way back I strayed from the path to tread through some soft grass and spongy moss. At end of the walk my feet felt good though slightly tender, like they had completed a full day hike rather than a short kilometre-long trail.

Europe has hundreds of designated “barfuss” or barefoot trails, with the highest concentrations in Germany and Austria. Many offer a sensory foot obstacle course with sections of things like sand, sawdust, pebbles, cobblestone, mud and water as well as some balancing and climbing challenges. Shoe storage facilities are provided at the start, and there are foot-washing stations at the end. Barefoot walking is also very popular in Korea and other Asian countries. Even the British are getting into it, with an increasing number of farms offering barefoot trails and tours. There are many enthusiastic bare-footers in North America but it is still far from a mainstream trend.

Many of our local trails are fine for barefoot walk-ing, though it is good to be

aware of hazards such as ticks, broken glass and dog-doo. A specially designed family-friendly barefoot trail could offer a safer alternative with tourism potential for our area. It could be a great way to attract visitors as part of a farm tour.

As a parent, I’m always looking for local things to do with my kids—a bare-foot trail would be a lot of fun!

Campbell River students recently achieved Marks of Distinction with Trin-ity College London. Congratulations to Connor Hogg, Hollis Mattheson, Nathan Glum, Plessa Walden, Abby Broadhurst, Ashley Hogg, Brielle Kelly, Yani Indrajaya and Beth Miller who all received top marks of the highest honour of Distinc-tion in Musical Theatre exams with Trin-ity College London.

Trinity College London sends examin-ers from the UK each year to examine over 600,000 students in over 60 countries in speech arts, dance, music, acting and musical theatre. Trinity College London has been a world wide examination board for over 130 years. Each year Trinity comes to Comox for the Vancouver Island exams.

Campbell River students have been part of Trinity’s exam process for four years now. Each year these kids prepare an extensive ‘one person show’, which

is specific to each grade level. Students prepare spoken monologues, dance pieces and musical theatre genre vocal pieces. Trinity’s examiners are rigorous in the grading process…they are looking for a very integrated, extensively researched and prepared program. The final segment of the exam is a lengthy discussion with the examiner to see just how much these students truly understand about what they have performed, and how they have trained for their exam performance.

All nine Campbell River students have achieved the highest level of marks from Trinity.

“It’s a huge accomplishment and we are really proud of them” say teachers Hea-ther Gordon Murphy, Kristy Miller, Amy Lelliott and Ruth Nichol. Campbell River students are making a mark in the world of musical theatre.

In Spain, red wine and a variety of freshly prepared tapas make the perfect pairing for the enjoyment of live flamenco - a traditional, complex and exquisitely passionate art form the country is world-famous for.

The spirit of this lively and community-binding tradition can be celebrate in downtown Courtenay this Thursday, June 26th, as Zocalo Café hosts an evening of live music and dance performed by local troupe - Azucena Flamenco. The show starts at 7:00 p.m. and, to secure a seat, reservations are recommended.

It will be an evening out in full Spanish-style, as the Zocalo features a savoury dinner of three different tapas as a complement to the visual and aural feast that is flamenco. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available.

Expect exquisite and rhythmic footwork under floating and expressive hands, mesmerizing guitar accompaniment and improvisation with raw, unre-fined emotion turned into song.

Popular around the world today as a respected art form, flamenco was born in the Middle-Ages of gypsy roots and diverse other influences, a result of a vibrant musical exchange and crosspollination going on between several distinct and very ancient cultures present in Spain at that time.

Local troupe Azucena Flamenco is made up of gui-tarist Oscar Robles Diaz, vocalist Brittany Bowman, and dancer from Japan Tomomi Ozaki - founder and teacher at the Comox Valley Flamenco Studio in Fanny Bay. Tomomi has been dancing flamenco for going on 20 years now, and her dedication to the art form is notable in her stunning performances.

Slotted to star as part of Victoria’s Annual Flamenco Festival coming up this August, this trio enjoys shar-ing their passion for flamenco locally in the Comox Valley. Since packing the Zocalo to maximum capacity for a performance last year, they have also participat-ed in the Comox Valley Immigrant Welcome Society’s first ever Global Fusion festival that happened in Courtenay this past March. More recently, they sold out the Fanny Bay Hall in a performance that featured students of the Comox Valley Flamenco Studio.

Mexican-born Oscar Robles Diaz studies many dif-ferent styles of music and began dedicating himself to the art of flamenco guitar in his adult life. He has various musical projects on the go and plays monthly at the Zocalo Café, usually on the third Thursday of each month. Email [email protected] to get on the mail-ing list to hear about his upcoming shows.

The Zocalo can be contacted for reservations or for more information about the Azucena Flamenco show happening Thursday, June 26th. The price is $25 (tax included) for the flamenco show and a full meal con-sisting of three different tapas. Call 331-0933 or visit www.zocalocafe.ca for more information. The Zocalo Café is located on 5th street at the corner of Cliffe Avenue.

The Pearl Ellis Gallery will kick off its 36th summer show season with its ninth Member’s People’s Choice show and sale.

This exhibition will run from Tuesday June 24th, to Sunday, July 13th. The Gallery will be open to the public every day from 10am to 4pm, Sundays 1 - 4pm but will be closed Mondays. The gallery will be closed Tuesday, July 1st to celebrate Canada Day.

There will be a “Reception to announce the winners” held Saturday, July 5th from 1 - 4pm and all are welcome to attend. It will be a great opportunity to meet the artists in the show and to view the fabulous art.

At this show the public, as well as the mem-bers, will be encouraged to fill out a ballot selecting their favorite piece of artwork in the exhibit. We are looking forward to the partici-pation of the public as well as the gallery membership.

The balloting will go on throughout the first part of the show and the votes will be tabulat-ed on Saturday, July 5th at noon. We will announce the winner and the runners up a week the reception later that day at 2 pm.

The winners will also be posted on our web-

site and in the local papers. The winning artist will receive a $100.00 gift certificate from Whyte’s Framing and a plaque.

There will also be a draw made from all the ballots. The winner receives a gift certificate for 20% off on a piece of art that they purchase at the gallery during 2014.

Visitors can expect to see quality pieces of work by over 50 plus established local artists and new artists.

The Pearl Ellis Gallery is always a great place to visit and to shop for that unique new piece of art for one’s home, business or as a gift.

The gallery also carries a good selection of art cards suitable for all occasions.

Members receive a 10% discount on pur-chases of art during the opening ‘reception’ or ‘meet and greet the artist’ day of each new show. New memberships are always available for $20.00.

The gallery is located in Comox at 1729 Comox Avenue. FMI or a virtual tour of the gallery please visit our web site at www.pearlellisgallery.com or our Facebook page. The gallery now offers free WiFi.

Come out for a great evening of music with Hello Cello.

Local Cellist and teacher, Helena Jung presents the latest concert in the Cellobration series.

A cello ensemble of 25 cellists from Nanaimo to Port Hardy will present well known classical and contemporary musical arrangments for the cello. Cellists of all skill levels from those who have been studying the cello for months to those who have been studying for years will be performing.

Almost all of the cellists are current or former stu-dents and range from 12 years old to seniors. Helena has arranged selected music for solo perfor-mances, group ensembles and the entire cello orchestra.

Ten student solo performances will include both classical and popular music such as Oscar and Hammerstein’s “Edelweiss”, “Send in the Clowns” from Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, and from the classical repertoire,”La Cinquetaine” by Gabriel Marie, “Vocalise” by Sergei Rachmaninoff and the popular Minuet from J.S. Bach Cello Suite No.1.

The entire ensemble will play” Sarabande” by Handel, the popular “All I Ask of You” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and Polovstain Dance from Borordin’s opera Prince Igor.

The orchestra then breaks into groups for selected pieces.

The Youth group will play a hauntingly beautiful arrangement of Schubert’s “Ave Maria” accompa-
