1. Describe the basic electrophysiology of the heart: Electrical versus mechanical function.

2. Define hemodynamic principles in the body.

3. Discuss the difference between preload, contractility and afterload as components impacting cardiac output.

4. Interpret ischemia, injury, and infarction patterns on a 12-lead EKG.

5. Summarize the difference between failure to capture and failure to sense in a pacemaker and how each is resolved.

6. Identify the difference between STEMI and NSTEMI.

7. Recognize the most common causes of arterial blood gas abnormalities.

8. Differentiate between hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic IV fluids and when each is considered most effective.

9. Identify the blood product of choice for Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy (DIC).

10. Contrast the difference between the various types of shock in both assessment and treatment priorities.

11. Distinguish the best pharmacologic methods to achieve blood pressure control for patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.

12. Evaluate dangerous drug-drug interactions of medications used in treating critical conditions.

13. Explain the nurse’s role in assessment of the patient experiencing SIRS, sepsis or septic shock.
