Aims Community College will be offering two Basic Peace Officer Academies fall 2020. The application process for both academies will begin March 16, 2020 with the initial application process closing July 31, 2020. Each academy will be limited to 20 students and applicants must be a minimum of 21 years of age by the start date of the academy. Applicants sponsored by a law enforcement agency will be given priority consideration. The general schedules for the two academies are listed below:

SCHEDULES Part-time (yearlong) Academy (Starts fall semester 2020 and concludes spring semester 2020)

• The part-time academy is run over two semesters with class dates being held on avaried schedule of Monday-Thursday evenings from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm and mostSaturdays from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Schedules and days off may be adjusted throughoutthe semester to accommodate bad weather days, facility availability, and otherunforeseen factors.

• Start date – Week of August 24, 2020• End date – May 4, 2021

Full-time (one semester) Academy (Fall semester 2020) • The fulltime academy is run over one semester with class dates being held

predominately on a Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm schedule. Some weekend andevening hours will be required to accommodate the availability of the training groundsand schedules and days off may be adjusted throughout the semester to accommodatebad weather days and other unforeseen factors.

• Start date – Week of August 24, 2020• End date – December 11, 2020

The academic courses for both academies will be held predominately at the Aims Community College, Windsor Campus at 1130 Southgate Dr., Windsor. The skill training (Arrest Control, Firearms, & Driving) for both academies will all be conducted at the Adams County Flatrock Regional Training Facility at 23600 E 128th Ave, in Commerce City. Final schedules are subject to the approval of the Colorado POST Board.

FINANCIAL AID/SCHOLARSHIPS Refer to the Financial Aid webpage for information on financial aid, scholarship or veteran benefit opportunities. Please plan several months in advance. The following programs are financial aid eligible:

ACADEMY REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS • Attendance is 100% mandatory with certain exceptions for unforeseen and

uncontrollable events for which students may be able to make up the hours. Any costsassociated with makeup hours for the skill training at the Flatrock Training Center will beat the expense of the student.

• The academy is run in a paramilitary format.• Uniforms and equipment are required at the expense of the student or sponsoring

agency.• In order to be accepted into the academy, students must be 21 years of age by the start

of the academy.• Students must demonstrate that they meet college placement reading and writing.

Proficiency can be demonstrated by one of the following methods:o High school transcripts no more than 10 years old. High school transcripts can be

sent to [email protected] to be evaluated for college ready requirements.o ACT/SAT scores or an Accuplacer score completed within the last 3 yearso Completion of a college level English classo Completion of an AAS or AA degree or higher

• Students must be physically, mentally, and emotionally fit and be able to perform thephysical requirements for the skill classes for Arrest Control, Firearms, and Drivingdemonstrated by passing a physical ability test and addressing how you have preparedfor the academy in a required essay.

• Students will not be accepted into the academy if they have any of the disqualifyingfactors as established by the Colorado P.O.S.T. Board.

• Students must be CPR and First Aid certified and the certification must remain currentthrough the date established for the Colorado P.O.S.T. written exam.

• Students must show proof of having health insurance.

Step 2 – Application packets will be reviewed for completeness and to verify that the candidate meets the minimum requirements. Students will be notified by the email address provided if they are invited to move to the next step in the process or if they have been dropped from the process. Students will be accepted into the academy based on the following selection process:

o Ability to meet the minimum physical fitness standardso Score on the admission essay

Step 3 – August 6th: Physical Fitness Standard Testing for unaffiliated students only. Affiliated students do not need to complete this step but must supply a letter on agency letterhead signed by an authorized official from your sponsoring agency stating that you meet the sponsoring agencies physical fitness requirements. In order to pass the physical fitness test candidates must meet the following minimum requirements. Students will be contacted with time(s)

Test Component Minimum Standard 1.5 Mile Run 16.27 minutes Sit Ups 19 in one minute Push Ups 15 in one minute Sit and Reach 14.3” Standing to Kneeling 20 in 2 minutes

Step 4 – The top candidates from steps 2 & 3 will be offered a spot in the academy as space allows. Candidates (affiliated and unaffiliated) starting one of the fall academies will need to meet with one of the Windsor Campus Pathway Advisors on one of the following dates. The on-campus meetings will all be held at the Windsor Campus, 1130 Southgate Drive or there is an online meeting option.

o Thursday July 23 – ZOOM (12-1:30pm)o Thursday August 6th - ZOOM (9:30-11am)

ADMISSION ESSAY This Essay must be submitted with your application packet. The essay will be used to determine how prepared you are for the academy. Please describe why you would like to enroll in the Aims Community College Police Academy and what you have done to prepare for the Police Academy. At a minimum address the following points:

• Why you are interested in pursuing a career in Law Enforcement.• Your support group to assist you during this training (family, friends, co-workers).• How you will balance the time and requirements of this program with the rest of the

obligations in your life.• What considerations have you taken to address the financial commitments of this

program (tuition & lab fees, uniform/equipment costs, POST written application fee,travel expenses to each of the training sites)?

• What have you done to prepare yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally for theupcoming academy.

• What do you see as your greatest challenge in completing this academy?

INFORMATION TO ASSIST WITH THE COMPLETION OF THIS APPLICATION Background Investigation Information (CCIC) You may request this investigation online by accessing the website of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation: (https://www.cbirecordscheck.com). Payment online is by credit card. You will get instant results that you can print.

Fingerprinting Per Colorado P.O.S.T. Rule 14, Candidates must submit proof to the Academy of fingerprint submission by providing a photocopy of the receipt from an electronic service, or a photocopy of the completed fingerprint card and the money order for payment to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

As per the attached instructions, fingerprints may be submitted in one of two ways. We strongly recommend using an electronic submission service. Both IdentoGo and Colorado Fingerprinting provide this service. Colorado Fingerprinting has a site at the Aims, Windsor Campus.

• If you choose to get a hard copy of your fingerprints, use ONLY the blue fingerprint cardthat you can obtain from the Police Academy at Aims Community College. Cards can beobtained by contacting Stacey Tekansik and making arrangements to pick up a card:

(b) A training academy shall not enroll any person who has been convicted of an offense that wouldresult in the denial of certification pursuant to § 24-31-305(1.5), C.R.S. (2004). The only exception shallbe if the Board has granted the person an exemption from denial of enrollment.

(c) A training academy shall not enroll any person who has been released or discharged from the U.S.Military under dishonorable conditions.

(d) It is unlawful for any person to possess a firearm who has been convicted in any court of a crime ofdomestic violence OR is subject to a court order that restrains such person from harassing, stalking, orthreatening an intimate partner OR is subject to a court order that prohibits such person frompossessing a firearm.

(e) Successful completion of the training academy does not guarantee that the trainee will either receiveP.O.S.T. certification or be appointed as a peace officer.

(f) It is each applicant’s responsibility to determine their own eligibility for certification PRIOR toenrolling in any training program.

BASIC PEACE OFFICER ACADEMY POTENTIAL DISQUALIFICATION FACTORS

MISDEMEANOR AND FELONY CONVICTIONS State law prohibits POST certification of any person who has been convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors. If an individual wishes to attend an academy and has a misdemeanor conviction that would preclude certification, they may request a variance to appeal the denial of certification pursuant to Rule 8 – Process for Seeking Exemption From Statutory Certification Restrictions. An individual convicted of any felony as an adult is ineligible, and no variance is allowed for a felony conviction with the following exceptions:

• Deferred judgments and sentencing agreements• Deferred prosecution agreements• Pretrial diversion agreements

Additionally, individuals with domestic violence convictions may not be eligible to serve as peace officers due to federal laws. Applicants will be disqualified from consideration if they have:

Two or more convictions for Driving under the influence of alcohol Release from or discharge from the U.S. Military under dishonorable conditions. ANY instance of domestic violence or domestic abuse. ANY instance of child abuse. ANY felony conviction or conviction of a crime involving moral turpitude. ANY misdemeanor conviction which involves sexual misconduct, illicit drugs/controlled

substances, perjury, tampering, child abuse, prostitution, aiding an escape, false reporting, domestic violence, or domestic abuse.

OTHER POTENTIAL DISQUALIFICATION FACTORS INCLUDE (BUT NOT NECESSARILY BE LIMITED TO):

1. Non-prescribed drug usage.2. Alcoholism (depending on circumstances, disposition and time lapse).3. A misdemeanor conviction (not listed above), depending on circumstances, disposition

and time lapse since offense(s). See attached.4. Police history - type, frequency and nature of contact(s).5. Motor vehicle record reflecting a careless/reckless pattern of driving.6. Ihave also planned for the necessary study-time (practice time) before and after classes.

(2) The Academy's skills programs (arrest control, firearms, and driving) are located at theAdams County Sheriff’s Office Flatrock Training Center and ancillary sites. To fulfill the goalsand objectives of these state-mandated classes, an Academy student will be required toregularly travel to and from the skills sites two-four times per week.

(3) I have read the attendance requirements and the rules relating to misdemeanor andfelony convictions and understand if I do not meet the attendance requirements or if I havebeen convicted of any of these crimes it will disqualify me from attending or continuing in theAims Community College Police Academy.

BASIC PEACE OFFICER ACADEMY COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE

The Aims Community College Basic Peace Officer Academy (“Academy”) encourages a healthy, constructive interest in law enforcement. The Academy will in no way knowingly contribute to the training and education of any individual who does not respect the law and the application of those laws. The Academy will not knowingly contribute to the education and training of any individual who (a) would use the knowledge, skills, and abilities learned to subvert the law or (b) is unfit to enter the Academy program and would use the knowledge, skills and abilities for purposes contrary to the highest ethical standards of a peace officer.

We are confident that you, as a law-abiding citizen of good character, and with respect for law and order, would not want anyone intent on breaking our laws, to be members of our program and school. That is why, for your protection and our own, we ask every one of our students to sign the following statement:

(1) I am willing and able to abide by the rules established by the Colorado POST Board and thePolicies and Procedures regarding student conduct established by Aims Community College and theAims Police Academy.

(2) I will use the education and training provided by the Aims Community College Basic PeaceOfficer Academy only for purposes which would support the principles of law and order.

(3) I have read and understand the entrance requirements for the Academy.

(4) By my signature to this Commitment, I acknowledge that I have the competence and presentcapacity to meet all requirements.

(5) I attest that I have no felony convictions nor a history of serious personal maladjustments,mental or psychological disorders of any type.
