Running Away Alarm Clock
EXECUTIVE SUMMERY
I have designed a unique robotic digital alarm clock called the Running Away Alarm Clock or better known as the RAAC which changes the way people interact with their alarm and solves the annoyances of other alarm clocks. The alarm clock has been designed expressly to respond to the needs of our main customer group, college students.
In testing it has proved to be engaging to use and to fix former problems that are universal to alarm clocks. Our clock consistently outperforms the competition in feature quality.
The demographic that this product is targeting is between 18-45 year old people who are in their prime age and have a really tight daily schedule.
This unique clock will help improve the productivity of its user. If a student uses the RAAC he will never miss a single class.
In this documentation I will illustrate all the products features, advantages and disadvantages
using many different methods.

Running Away Alarm Clock
INTRODUCTION
The main objective of this assignment is to introduce and innovate around an existing product.
Here I have chosen to innovate around the humble “Alarm Clock”.
The alarm clock has been around for many decades and has served us for our daily routine – to
prepare us for our morning work and to remind us for important events.
The primary purpose of the alarm clock was to wake people from their sleep or short naps; they
are sometimes used for other reminders as well. Some use sound, some use light, and some use
sensors to identify when a person is in a light stage of sleep, in order to avoid waking someone
when they're deeply asleep, which causes tiredness, even if the person has gotten adequate sleep.
My innovation around the humble alarm clock is “The Running Away Clock” or known as the
RAAC. It is like any other alarm clock but with add-ons which include wheels, motion sensor, a
built in voice command and also a built in puzzle, which has to be solved in order to turn the
alarm off.
The clock works once the alarm goes off. It jumps off the table and starts to run around, while
the volume of the alarm slowly increases. The motion sensor inside it notifies the clock if there is
an object nearby, thus being able to avoid them.

PART 1
Problem Statement
Alarm clock in the current market can be easily turned off and causes the individual to disregard
their important appointments by switching off their alarm clocks instantly.
Objective Statement
The reason why I chose a “Running Away Alarm Clock” or better known as the RAAC is to
ensure that the individual gets up from his/her sleep wide awake by the time he/she is able to turn
off the alarm clock.

Moshi
The Moshi Voice Control (VC) Alarm Clock, however, is not a talking alarm clock. The Moshi
VC Alarm Clock is the first 'listening alarm clock' that allows you set the time and alarm by your
voice alone.
With the Moshi VC Alarm Clock, you are in complete control by using our voice activated
commands. Simply activate Moshi by saying, "Hello Moshi". Moshi will then politely respond
with "Command Please" and then choose any of the 12 voice activated commands. (MOSHI
Lifestyle, 2012)
Moshi changed the alarm clock industry by creating the first voice activated alarm clock.
Braun
German consumer Products Company based in Kronberg. From 1984 until 2005, Braun was a
wholly owned subsidiary of The Gillette Company, which had purchased a controlling interest in
the company in 1967.
Braun produces quality sound and acoustic products and is also one of the leading brands in the
American market. (Braun GmbH, 2012)
Objective
To create a new alarm clock that will revolutionize the industry.

PART 2
Idea Generation
The process of creating, developing and communicating ideas, which are abstract, concrete or
visual. The process includes the process of constructing through the idea, innovating the concept
developing the process and bringing the concept into reality (Business Dictionary, 2012)
Scamper
Scamper is a technique you can use to spark your creativity and help you overcome any
challenge you may be facing. In essence, scamper is a general-purpose checklist with idea-
spurring questions — which is both easy to use and surprisingly powerful. (Luciano, 2012)
Substitute Substitute the main usage of the alarm clock from just being a tool that
is disregarded of its properties to being a tool that wakes one up and
keep them awake.
Combine Combine the alarm clock with wheels and motion sensors so it can
move on its own away from the user.
Adapt Adapting to everyone from any age.
Modify Modify Alarm Clock into a RUNNING AWAY ALARM CLOCK
Put to Another
Use
Put another to use. Instead of just being an alarm clock; it could also
display you important appointments.
Eliminate Eliminate the limitation of a clock and intelligent robotic movements to
be one product.
Rearrange -

Running Away Alarm Clock
Outcome
1. Combination of alarm clock and robotics2. Modify ordinary alarm clock by adding wheels3. Eliminate the limitation of alarm clock as a mono function 4. Adapting for everyone
Evaluation
The best design taken from using this technique is having combined the alarm clock with wheels
and robotics movements. In general, the SCAMPER generates specific ideas. It refers to the
related subject in order to form new idea from it. The actual development of it is from that
particular subject. Users can easily come out with creative idea since it has seven steps to the
subject.

Force Fitting Trigger
Providing visual stimuli to help spark off ideas in people's minds, can be very useful technique.
Here the idea is to force- fit combinations of attributes that one associates with an unrelated
object to the problem with which one is preoccupied (Mycoted, 2011)

Evaluation
From these keywords take from the table, the best outcomes are number 3, Daily use + Multi-
Purpose + Usability. Since Running Away Alarm Clock is targeted for all audiences it fits
perfectly with the research done using the trigger fitting technique.

Mind Mapping
Mind mapping is a simple technique for drawing information in diagrams, instead of writing it in
sentences. The diagrams always take the same basic format of a tree, with a single starting point
in the middle that branches out, and divides again and again. The tree is made up of words or
short sentences connected by lines. The lines that connect the words are part of the meaning.

Ideally, you would be able to sleep as much as you need to. Each individual seems to require an
average amount of sleep to feel rested, which may vary across a lifetime, and certainly is
different from person to person. (Brandon Peters, 2012)
But daily routine are important and some are more important than others that is why a morning
wakeup call or something to wake an individual up in the morning is really important.

Product Table
Function
The function of this product is to be the source of a morning
reminder and also to wake.
Features
The features of the Alarm Clock consist of high end technological
development like gyroscopic stability to stabilize the robotic clock
on just two wheels.
Technology
The technology used in this clock has never been implemented
elsewhere. The clock is self-aware of its surrounding when it is
activated.
Price
The price of the clock in the general market will be determined on
the type of materials used since the product is ether premium
material like glass and polycarbonate. The price range however for
the clock is set to be around RM150 - RM170 which is lower than
our competitors.

Idea Evolution
By combining an Alarm clock with voice activation, wheels and robotics our final outcome is the
Running Away Alarm Clock.
Force Field Analysis
Force Field Analysis was created by Kurt Lewin in the 1940s. Lewin originally used the tool in
his work as a social psychologist. Today, however, Force Field Analysis is also used in business,
for making and communicating go/no-go decisions (Carlson, 2012).

Evaluation
Product there is a limitation in the product that found troublesome for the customer or user which
is the product is from electronic devices and it will be hard to get use to as the clock could run
around and get stuck under something. However it also helps the user wake up while trying to
retrieve it.
Conclusion
The Running Away Alarm Clock is made in such a way that it will provide the best outcome for
it user. Having not missed an important is a success for the product and it will keep ahead of its
capitations in the market as it is the only one to provide such unique experience.
