Creepy Cat isn’t very cute. And he’s not very friendly. In fact, he’s kind of creepy! And that’s why he’s called Creepy Cat.

1Creepy Cat isn’t very cute.

Creepy Cat used to be a regular cat; but, one day when he was young, he became lost during a hurricane and couldn’t find his way home afterward. Now, he doesn’t have a people family to look after him and he lives outdoors by himself. Sometimes, life isn’t very easy for Creepy Cat. Poor Creepy Cat.

But Creepy Cat is a lucky cat, too. For instance, in Florida, there are lots of little lizards everywhere. To keep from going hungry, Creepy Cat can eat them whenever he wants. Creepy Cat eats lots of lizards! Poor little lizards.

And, since Creepy Cat lives outside by himself, he doesn’t have to be home on time for supper. He doesn’t have chores to do either, since he’s a cat and not a little boy or girl. That means Creepy Cat has lots of time to go on bad-ventures! Lucky Creepy Cat!

Creepy Cat eats lots of little lizards to keep from going hungry. Be-cause he’s a cat, though, he’d rather eat cat food than lizards any day. Cat food tastes better and it doesn’t try to bite you on the tongue when you’re eating it! So, one of Creepy Cat’s favorite badventures is creeping around looking for cat food.

The only way Creepy Cat gets to eat cat food is by creep-ing around houses where other cats live with their people families.

If he’s lucky, he might find a bowl of cat food that’s been left outside. Creepy Cat knows he’ll be chased away if he’s seen by the people who live in the hous-es, so he has to

be really creepy to get the cat food. He sinks down close to the ground and creeps up to the bowl, trying hard not to be seen. And, if it’s really hot outside, he might even have his mouth open and his tongue sticking out. Of course, that makes him look even creepier!

If Creepy Cat finds some cat food, he eats it really quickly be-fore he gets chased away and has to eat lizards, instead. Sometimes, he eats so fast he starts to choke and spit up the cat food. He looks really creepy when he does that. It’s important to eat slowly and carefully so you don’t choke and spit your food back up.

One day, Creepy Cat went looking for cat food to eat. He came to a house where four cats lived with their people family. The people didn’t really want four cats, but they couldn’t find other homes for them.

At first, the people only had one cat, but then she became a mommy cat with three little kittens. The kittens were really tiny and cute, and they made nice little noises that sounded like “Mew.” The people enjoyed making little noises back at the kittens. They also like rubbing their noses in the kittens’ fur. The kittens were like soft little fur balls and they smelled really nice. They were fun to cuddle and play with.

Before the people even knew it, though, the kittens grew up and became cats. They were still nice, but they weren’t quite as cute as when they were kittens. The people tried to find homes for the

cats with other people families, but they couldn’t. A hurricane had just made a big mess of South Florida and there were lots and lots of other animals—just like Creepy Cat—that had become lost and needed new people families. Poor animals.

So, the mother cat and her three grown-up kittens stayed living together at the people house where Creepy Cat was creeping around looking for cat food.

Creepy Cat found a hole in a screen that was supposed to keep bugs from bothering the people when they were playing in their swimming pool. The hole was there because the hurricane had made it.

The hurricane had made lots of other holes in the screen as well, but Creepy Cat only need-ed the one he found. He crept through the hole and went up close up close up close up close up close up close up close up close up close up close up close up close up close up close up close up close

to the back door of the house. Somehow, he knew that, if there was any cat food to eat, he’d find it there.

Three bowls were sitting out by the door. Creepy Cat got ex-cited when he saw them. He was really tired of eating lizards that day and the thought of cat food made him lick his lips. And you know what that did: it made him look creepier!

Creepy Cat crept up to the first bowl and looked inside. “Gaah!” he thought. It was empty. He crept up to the second bowl and looked inside. “Gaaaah!” he thought again. It was empty, too. Creepy Cat was getting really upset because he could smell the cat food, but couldn’t find it. He looked over at the third and last bowl and then crept up to it. When he looked inside, his creepy body shivered with delight. The bowl was full of delicious cat food! The people who had made the cat food made it look like tiny brown and orange fishes. Creepy Cat didn’t know they looked like little fishes, though, because cats don’t think like people. He would have eaten it even if it looked like little bits of dirt.

Just as Creepy Cat was about to take a bite of the little brown and orange fishes, he heard, “Meow?” His creepy ears stood straight up and his creepy body got all tense. He quickly looked around and saw a beautiful, shiny, black cat with yellow eyes looking at him. It was the prettiest cat he’d ever seen, and he suddenly wished he wasn’t so creepy-looking. But he still wanted to eat the cat food. Creepy Cat

turned sideways and arched his back way up in the air so he’d look big. He then looked at the black cat and said, “Hissss!”

The black cat was a girl cat, and she was one of the three grown-up kittens that lived at the house where Creepy Cat was trying to eat cat food. The people who lived at the house called the cat Shadow because of her dark color. Shadow’s fur was long and soft, and she was very friendly and gentle. The people liked Shadow. They also liked one of Shadow’s sisters, which they called Gray Cat. She was also soft and friendly. They didn’t like Shadow’s other sister as much, though. She had nice gray and white fur but she always ran away when the people tried to pet her. The people also didn’t like the mother cat very much any-more, because she became unfriendly after her kittens were born. She started peeing inside the people’s house, too, which made the people mad. Once you’re old enough to know how, it’s important to try to pee in the right place so people don’t have to clean up after you.

When Creepy Cat said “Hissss” to her, Shadow just sat there and looked at him. Maybe she wasn’t fooled by his stand-sideways-and-arch-your-back-to-look-big trick. Or, maybe she didn’t think Creepy Cat was very creepy. It’s hard to know what cats think because they can’t talk to people.

Creepy Cat soon realized that Shadow wasn’t trying to chase him away from the cat food. He hungrily began to eat some of the little brown and orange fishes. As usual, Creepy Cat ate quickly because he was afraid someone might chase him away. Because he wasn’t careful, he choked and spat up his food while Shadow was watching. He wasn’t embarrassed when he spat up in front of Shadow, though, since only people get embarrassed when they do dumb things. Shadow didn’t care either.

When he was finished eating, Creepy Cat licked his lips and then looked at Shadow. He liked her. Thinking he might become her boyfriend, Creepy Cat crept over to Shadow and tried to smell her fur. Shadow wasn’t in the mood to make a new friend, however, and she jumped away from Creepy Cat. She then did the stand-sideways-and-arch-your-back-to-look-

big trick. Creepy Cat understood what that meant, so he walked away from her. He crept over to the hole in the screen, jumped through it, and went off to find a nice place to lie down and sleep.

Shadow didn’t care either.

Creepy Cat Meets Creepy CrawlerOne day, Creepy Cat didn’t have much to do. He wasn’t hungry because he’d already caught and eaten a tummy-full of little lizards. Catch-ing lizards was easy for Creepy Cat because they were everywhere where he lived in South Florida. There were probably even more liz-ards than people in South Florida, and that’s a lot! Creepy Cat didn’t care about that, though, because he never thought about trying to eat people. They were much too big.

Catching lizards was kind of fun for Creepy Cat. He liked it when they tried to skitter and get away. For him, it was like a game of chase. It wasn’t fun for the liz-ards, though. For them, it was a

matter of life or death. Unfortunately, nature isn’t always kind to little, tiny creatures.

Creepy Cat wasn’t thirsty, either. He’d had a long drink of water from a puddle. Nor was he sleepy, since he’d already taken a nap after eating the lizards. And since he was a cat, he didn’t have chores to do, like cleaning his room or taking out the garbage. So, that’s why he didn’t have much to do.

Exploring was always something Creepy Cat liked to do when he was bored. It was one of his favorite badventures. People say cats are curious. Sometimes, they say, “Curiosity killed the cat.” They don’t really mean it, though, since that’s just an expression. An ex-pression is something that means something other than what it sounds like it means. Or something.

So, Creepy Cat went exploring. After awhile, when he was creep-ing around the back of a people house, Creepy Cat heard a strange sound. The sound he heard was, “Burp, burp, burp, burp, burp, burp…”

Creepy Cat had never heard such a sound before, so he wasn’t sure if he should be afraid or not. The “burp, burp” sound wasn’t very loud. If it had been loud, Creepy Cat would have known for sure to be afraid. That’s because cats have much better hearing than people. Sounds that are loud for people are super-loud and scary for cats! That’s why they duck and then run away and hide when there’s a loud noise. It’s easy to scare a cat.

Page 14: Creepy Cat final

Standing still, Creepy Cat twisted his pointy ears around un-til they told him the “burp, burp” sound was coming from inside the swimming pool at the back of the people house. Of course, he didn’t know it was a swimming pool; to him, it was just a giant puddle that he didn’t want to fall into.

Since he was a cat, Creepy Cat was made curious by the sound. But, just because he wasn’t scared by it didn’t mean he wasn’t cautious. He crouched down and crept ever-so-creepily up to the side of the swim-ming pool. The “burp, burp” sound became louder, but still not scary-loud. Nevertheless, Creepy Cat had his ears standing up and his eyes big. He

was ready to spin around and run away in an in-stant if he didn’t like what was in the pool. He reached the edge and looked in.
