Friday, February 11th is Greentree’s Annual Elegance Luncheon
for our fifth grade students!
During lunch, fifth graders and third graders will be switching lunch times and K-4 students will be eating lunch in their classrooms. We are requesting that parents do not visit for lunch on this Friday due to a lack of room in the classrooms. Thank you for your cooperation.
5th Grade Parents:
In a few short months you will be joining the Creekwood Families and Friends Group. I hope this notice is not just 30 seconds short of last minute, but I am having a series of parent meetings at each of our elementary schools to discuss your child's academic life at CMS and an academic path to high school and college. So, my catchy announcement is below.

Greentree Science Fair 2011
The Greentree Science Fair will be held on Thursday,
March 10. The science fair is voluntary, but all students, K-
5, are encouraged to present a science project. Students can
elect to participate only (with no judging) or participate and
have their project judged. Choosing to judge will qualify a
student to advance to the District Science Fair.
Scientific methods are important to follow when conducting
experiments and preparing projects. Briefly, the scientific
method is as follows:
♦ Purpose and objective
♦ Hypothesis
♦ Procedure (for research and conducting the experiment)
♦ Results
♦ Conclusion
Project displays should be 36 inches (height), by 36 inches
(width), by 18 inches (depth).
Science fair project displays that could be hazardous to the
public or the facility are prohibited. This includes, but is
not limited to, the following:
♦ No live or dead animals
♦ No hazardous chemicals
♦ Liquids, including water, must be totally contained
♦ Containers of commercial products must be empty
♦ No open flames or fires
♦ No cultures of mold or bacteria
♦ No food, etc.
Have fun with your science project! Parents, we encourage
the project to be the child’s work and your guidance.
All science projects are due to at school for set up on Wednesday, March 9, from 3:00-4:00 PM, in the cafeteria. The Greentree Science Fair will be held in the cafeteria on Thursday morning, March 10, 2011.
Registration to come in February Gazettes.

On Saturday, Jan.29TH Savannah Haden, Kate Brinson , and Thomas Brinson took part in Kingwood's annual Kleenwood Day. This a day set apart for the community to work together to pick up litter and other debris from the greenbelts and neighborhoods. Savannah, Kate and Thomas spent much of their time picking up litter from the GTE playground and surrounding grassy areas.
Notes From the Nurse It’s that time of year for upper respiratory infections and flu. Symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle aches, runny nose, cough and sore throat. It usually lasts 2-7 days. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may accompany these symptoms. Have your child get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and take acetaminophen (Tylenol) as needed. Do not give aspirin or aspirin products (Aspergum, Pepto-Bismol, Excedrin, etc.) to children with flu-like illness, colds and chicken pox due to a possible rare complication called Reyes Syndrome. Your child should be free of fever and flu symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school. This benefits both the ill student and the well students.
Fifth disease (erythema infectiosum) is a viral illness caused by parvovirus 19. It is so named because it was the fifth pink-red infectious rash to be described by physicians (following scarlet fever, measles, rubella and roseola). It begins with a low-grade fever, headache, and mild respiratory symptoms – a stuffy nose like a common cold. These symptoms pass until a rash appears 6-11 days later. The rash classically begins on the face as a facial flushing that gives the child a “slapped-cheek” appearance. The rash quickly spreads as red blotches, extending down to the trunk and to the arms and legs. As the centers of the blotches begin to clear, the rash takes on a lacy net-like appearance, which can last for 5 to 10 days. Once cleared, the rash may reappear for several weeks, especially after exercise, sunlight or a warm bath. Teens and young adults may have pain or swelling in the joints and sometimes complain that the rash itches. The disease is contagious from 2 weeks to 3 days before the rash appears. Children are no longer contagious and do not need to be excluded from school once the rash occurs. Pregnant women in contact with an infected child before the rash appears should speak with their doctor. Blood tests to check for immunity or infection are available. Fortunately, most adults have had this infection during childhood and are no longer at risk of catching the illness.
Pinworms are small worms that infect the intestines. Symptoms include difficulty sleeping due to the itching that occurs at night, intense itching around anus, and irritated or infected skin around the anus from consistent scratching. Pinworms can be spotted in the anal area, especially at night using a flashlight. To keep from spreading, clean toilet seats, keep fingernails short and clean, wash bedding and underclothing, wash hands before meals and after using the toilet. Keep hands and fingers away from nose and mouth unless they are freshly washed.
