In the opening scene, set at a juvenile correctional facility in Los Angeles in the year 1998, a fight

breaks out between Adonis "onnie" !ohnson Ale# $enderson% and another boy after the boy says

so&ething about onnie's late &other( After being pulled away and placed in his cell, onnie is visited

by )ary Anne *reed +hylicia ashad%( -hinking she is another social worker there to put hi& in

another group ho&e, onnie refuses to talk to her until she says that his father was her husband, and

she would like hi& to co&e live with her( onnie asks her what his father's na&e was(

In the present day, in -ijuana, .aja *alifornia, )e#ico, onnie now played by )ichael .( !ordan% is

co&peting in a bo#ing &atch( $e defeats his opponent easily and collects his earnings( 1/ hours later,

he returns to Los Angeles where he works a desk job( 0nsatisfied, he hands in his letter of resignation

to his boss and chooses to &ove on(

onnie goes to the elphi y& where his father, the late Apollo *reed, used to train( onnie

challenges all the fighters in the gy& to a &atch, and the winner gets the keys to his )ustang( 2ne

fighter steps up, but onnie knocks hi& down easily( Another professional fighter, anny "3tunt&an"

4heeler Andre 4ard%, takes on onnie and defeats hi&, taking the keys( onnie goes to )ary

 Anne's ho&e and she sees his bloodshot eye( 3he hates that he is fighting like Apollo was, re&inding

hi& what he went through during his days as a fighter( Later, onnie watches an old fight between his

father and ocky .alboa 3ylvester 3tallone%, and onnie &i&es his father's fighting style(

onnie &oves to +hiladelphia to start anew( In his new apart&ent, he watches a news seg&ent on

undefeated bo#ing cha&pion "+retty" icky *onlan -ony .ellew%, who is set to co&pete in what &ay

be his last professional &atch as he is being charged with gun possession and &ay spend the ne#t

seven years behind bars( *onlan was set to fight 4heeler, but they started fighting early and *onlan

broke 4heeler's jaw, pro&pting 4heeler to file a lawsuit against hi&( As onnie tries to sleep, he

hears loud &usic co&ing fro& the apart&ent below hi&( $e goes knocking and &eets his neighbor

.ianca -essa -ho&pson%( $e de&ands she turn the &usic down, and she says she will, only to keep

it at the sa&e volu&e(

onnie goes to Adrian's estaurant, owned and &anaged by ocky( -here, onnie sees a picture ofocky and Apollo fighting fro& their first &atch in 1956%( ocky co&es out and &eets onnie for the

first ti&e( $e asks ocky to train hi&, but ocky clai&s to be done with that( onnie also asks about a

third fight that the two had behind closed doors at the end of ocky III% and in7uires as to who won(

ocky says Apollo did(

onnie goes to another gy& operated by +ete 3porino itchie *oster%( 4hen he says he co&es

fro& L(A(, onnie earns the nickna&e "$ollywood"( $e chooses to continue seeking ocky's help,

while also deciding to pursue a relationship with .ianca after hearing her perfor& at a night club( -he

two go and get +hilly cheese steaks, and onnie learns that .ianca has progressive hearing loss, so

she is preparing for the inevitable(

ocky visits the ce&etery and sits by the graves of his brotherinlaw +aulie and Adrian( It's +aulie's

birthday, and ocky wants to re&e&ber his departed friend(

ocky decides to take onnie under his wing, and onnie starts calling hi& "0nc" uncle%( onnie

stays at ocky's place as they train bright and early, while also developing a close bond(

onnie's first &ajor fight is against +ete's son Leo abe osado%( .efore the &atch, +ete

approaches ocky and says that he knows onnie is Apollo *reed's son( -hinking this could bring in

good press, +ete wants to e#ploit the na&e, but ocky prefers to keep it a secret( -he &atch

co&&ences, and although onnie takes a few hits, he defeats Leo(

4ord breaks out that onnie is Apollo's son, conceived out of an affair during Apollo's &arriage(

*o&&entators begin to look at onnie differently, as he feared, while also wondering if this discovery

will hurt Apollo's legacy( In Liverpool, *onlan's &anager -o&&y $oliday raha& )c-avish% learns of

this and thinks this could &ake for an eventful fight( $e flies to the 3tates to &eet with ocky and

onnie to propose the fight to the&( After &uch deliberation, ocky and onnie agree to go on with

the fight(

ocky starts to put onnie through &ore training, but he then vo&its and collapses( onnie takes

ocky to the hospital for a test( Later on, ocky &eets with the doctor and learns he has been

diagnosed with on$odgkins Ly&pho&a( -he doctor says it's good that they caught it early and that

they ought to start che&otherapy soon, but ocky refuses to go through with that because it didn't

work out for Adrian when the sa&e thing happened( onnie eventually finds out on his own and is

upset with ocky for not wanting to get help, but ocky wants to just accept his fate(

4ith the news of his na&e being outed to the world, onnie begins to fear that he will be looked at as

a fake *reed and a failure to his father's legacy( $e visits .ianca at the club where she perfor&s and

&eets -one -ru&p Anthony .rice%( -one takes a picture with onnie, but he upsets onnie when he

refers to hi& as ".aby *reed"( -his escalates into a fight, and onnie is arrested, with ocky co&ing

to bail hi& out( onnie later goes to .ianca's apart&ent to apologi:e and ad&it that he is scared for

hi&self and for ocky's sake( .ianca tells hi& they need to work on their own issues separately and

she shuts hi& out(

onnie and ocky reach a co&pro&ise, wherein ocky continues to train onnie for the upco&ing

fight, and ocky will undergo che&otherapy( After &uch e#tensive training, onnie earns supporters

around town, particularly fro& the youths in the area(

-he two fly to Liverpool for a press conference( *onlan shows up with $oliday and starts trashtalking

onnie, saying he is an overnight success and a false *reed( ocky holds onnie back fro& &aking

a du&b &ove, saying this is what *onlan wants(

-he night of the big fight arrives, and even .ianca is there to show support( )ary Anne watches fro&

her ho&e( As a gift, she sent onnie his father's original A&erican flag shorts( -he fans boo and jeer

onnie as he &akes his way to the ring, while *onlan gets a dra&atic entrance and all the fans chanthis na&e( As the fight co&&ences, *onlan cuts onnie above the eye and wins the first round(

$owever, onnie steps up and starts to get so&e hits in, but not enough to convince everyone else

that he's worthy( .etween rounds, ocky and $oliday offer encourage&ent and support to their

respective fighters( onnie takes &any hits and spits out a lot of blood, and eventually *onlan hits his

left eye so hard that it gets co&pletely shut, but since onnie can still see well enough, the fight

continues( *onlan strikes onnie again, knocking hi& to the ground( onnie then re&e&bers what

he's fighting for, and he gets up real fast( onnie strikes back and hits *onlan &ultiple ti&es before

bringing hi& to the floor, but *onlan gets up before the referee gets to 1;( -he fight is over, and

*onlan re&ains undefeated( $owever, he acknowledges onnie's work with respect, and onnie

reciprocates( -he co&&entator approaches onnie and briefly interviews hi&( onnie refers to ocky

as his fa&ily( -he co&&entator asks onnie what he would say to his father if he were there( onniesays he would tell Apollo that he loves hi& and that he knows he didn't leave hi& on purpose( -he

fans then start to chant "*reed"( onnie leaves with ocky and .ianca(

In the final scene, back in +hiladelphia, ocky and onnie cli&b the fa&ed steps in front of the

+hiladelphia )useu& of Art( ocky is a bit winded to keep going, but onnie pushes hi& to keep

walking up( As they get to the top, they ad&ire the view of the city(
