2018 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Celebrating 25 Years of ATHE

Creativity & Transformation in Tourism Education:

REF, TEF and collaboration with industry

6th-7th December 2018 at Leeds Beckett University

(hosted by the School of Events, Tourism & Hospitality Management, Leeds Beckett University)

This year, for our 25th Anniversary, our pedagogic theme focuses on industry-education collaboration in relation to teaching and research and, given our conference setting, our research theme focuses on city tourism. Our PhD Colloquium, sponsored by the Family Holiday Association, continues for the fifth year to encourage students to present at an established conference, meet potential employers and get constructive feedback in a friendly, supportive environment.

SPEAKERSProfessor Melanie Smith (Institute of Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality, Budapest Metropolitan University) will open the conference with her Keynote on 'Beyond the Ivory Tower: Creativity and Transformation in Higher Education', drawing on her UK and European experiences. This will establish the conference theme on creativity and transformation in tourism education, particularly in terms of creative leadership, developing students vocationally and encouraging connections with industry.

Dr Heike Behle (Institute for Employment Research, University of Warwick) will continue the theme with her Keynote on ‘Employability as an outcome of tourism education beyond TEF: Theoretical conceptualisation and measurement’. The vocational and applied nature of our tourism programmes, together with the current HE landscape, makes this research particularly relevant. Other speakers will contribute to a panel discussion on ‘From rhetoric to reality: making education - industry links really work’.

STREAMSTherefore, we are seeking submissions on:

Creativity & Transformation in Tourism Education: REF, TEF and Collaboration with Industry: This theme reflects collaboration, creativity and transformation in all aspects of curriculum and vocational development, continuing professional development, students and industry as co-creators, teaching, learning and assessment in Tourism.

City Tourism Research: This research theme reflects our 2018 conference location in the vibrant city of Leeds, the biggest financial district outside of London, and considers research connected with social, cultural, economic and environmental dimensions of city tourism.

PhD Colloquium: This year, the doctoral colloquium will run alongside the first day of the main conference. Aiming to encourage doctoral students to present at an established conference, meet potential employers and get constructive feedback in a friendly, supportive environment, sessions would include topics such as: writing, viva, and publishing. Instead of paper presentations, PhD researchers are invited to submit an abstract for a poster presentation based on their research.

LOCATIONLeeds is well served by rail and air. Frequent direct trains from London to Leeds take just over two hours and there are direct train service links from many other major UK cities.
