CREATIVELY INDEPENDENT AUGUST 25, 2009 PAGE 1 No Space Left... Calendars fill up in September. It seems that every weekend in September oers at least 5 events and of course Labor Day Weekend is a huge one for all of the wineries. Most are open and oering tastes of new releases, special oers, parties and a beautiful glance at vineyards turning color in the golden rays of September sun. This may be the shortest issue of Mosier Valley News yet as August seems to be the month many of us vacation ourselves though September and October are favorite times to get away for one last grasp at rain free, sunny times. Get out and enjoy it, it is harvest time in more ways than one. Suzi Mosier Valley News September Recovery September is busy enough, now, Mosier must recover !om the Fire. This was a far dierent paragraph just last week but now it is a placeholder for a Mosier Valley News yet to come. In this issue we ignore the fire for now to give us time to gather stories and news from the devastation that has been named the “Microwave Fire” because it began at a microwave tower up west of town. Talk of a community gathering to honor our fire fighters has begun, stay tuned. Our landscape is changed forever but it will heal and come back in nature’s own revival. OK, WHO’S DUMPING THEIR GARBAGE AT THE RECYCLING SITE? You do have go get to the recycling site in Mosier early before it fills up but if you find the windows closed and the container full, please take your refuse back home with you or better yet drive it to Hood River where you can recycle it. This appears to be garbage, however, and simply isn’t to be left at a recycling site. Most people are good about keeping our site clean and picked up but whoever did this just makes it hard for the hardworking people who manage our containers. No dumping, please.

MUNK’S PURPLE PORRIDGE

This could well be one of those memories our children recall for the rest of their lives. The community picnic in the orchard.

Kale: Plant year ‘round Lettuce: Sta"er throughout the season

MUNK’S CEREAL (YOU WON’T FIND IT UNDER TITLE PURPLE PORRIDGE)Available at Mother’s Marketplace in Hood River, this porridge is so good that it has

replaced my oatmeal. Yea, you need to tend it while cooking but cooking time is flexible depending on how soft you want your cereal. I cook for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently for first 5 minutes then on lowest setting for another 5 or so.

Cook this for about 10 minutes, stir often as it can stick to bottom of pan (that’s because it is REAL food)

I’d put this up against oat meal any day for nutrition

Start your day off with GREAT nutritionCook in ration of 1 part Munk’s cereal to 3 parts water.

Blueberries provide anti-oxidents and fresh fruit benefits

Munk’s gorgeous purple color comes from red corn that turns purple when cooked

One Hundred Years Ago In Mosier Glimpses Of History From The Mosier Bulletin

Compiled by Doris Lewis Smith

Friday, Sept. 3, 1909 We have some BARGAINS in improved and unimproved lands in the wonderful fruit belt of MOSIER. Distance from the town of Mosier, on the O. R. & N. main line, from one and a half to seven miles. This land is noted for its fertility and is especially adapted to raising the finest apples that can be grown in the United States, and needs no irrigation. We also have a number of good homesteads and homestead relinquishments—all good bargains. For particulars, call at my office in the BULLETIN building, or address, D. D. Hail, Lock Box 84, Mosier, Oregon

NOTICETo all whom it may concern: Notice is hereby given that a mass meeting of the citizens of Mosier and vicinity will

be held next Monday night at 8 o’clock in Lamb’s Hall. The object of the meeting is to discuss and formulate some plan to secure a permanent boat landing at Mosier—one that can be used at all times of the year. As this is a subject which concerns the whole community, it is earnestly desired that every man in this district attend this meeting.

Friday, Sept. 10, 1909 To emphasize the necessity of a good boat landing at Mosier and the unreliability of the present train service, it is only necessary to state that one day last week, when the west bound local was several hours late, twelve passengers flagged the steamer J. N. Teal, of the Open River Transportation line, and went to Portland.

MOSIER TO ENTERTAIN The people of Mosier have a far-famed reputation for their ability to entertain visitors, and in being given the privilege of entertaining the Sunday School convention which meets here on the 25th of this month, we trust they will live up to, or exceed, their past reputation. In order that this body of honorable guests shall be royally entertained, it will be necessary for the entire community of Mosier to contribute its assistance. Hence it is earnestly requested by the Sunday Schools of Mosier that the people of Mosier who attend this convention will bring their baskets well filled with good things, and turn them over to a receiving committee, which will be at Lamb’s Hall to take charge of the dinner and see that the people of Mosier, as well as their guests, receive due service.

Friday, Sept. 17, 1909 SCHOOL NOTES The enrollment for the first day was an increase of 13 over last year. The new Fifth Grade are now located in Mrs. Gove’s room. The primary enrollment numbers 8. All those who wish to send beginners should enroll them as soon as possible. The school law requires all pupils between the ages of 9 and 14 years inclusive to attend school for the entire term. All pupils between those ages should attend and avoid being reported.

Friday, Sept. 24, 1909 SUNDAY’S BALL GAME The ball game played on the Odell diamond last Sunday was called by the Grand View boys of Mosier with Mt. Hood, as the Mosier return game. When the team got to Odell, they expected to play the Mt. Hood team and they did, with the Odell battery and four others of the Odell team, as was found out when the game was about half over. We played it to a finish just the same, and the score stood 16 to 0 in favor of Mt. Hood. When we spoke of the Odell boys, we were speaking

Page 5: CREATIVELY INDEPENDENT AUGUST 25, 2009 Mosier ......2010/09/02  · Fingerstyle Blues, Ragtime and Hawaiian 7PM Live Art Auction Original art works from: Sandra Haynes Melinda Hannigan

of a team that has been winning over other good teams, and as we are but new beginners, we did not expect to play such a line-up. Our game was to have been played with the Mt. Hood team. We have not played them and are still waiting for a return game with them. We can hardly pass over their hospitality, which extended so far that we paid for our own dinners, which was due us at their expense.

IMPRESSIONS BY THE WAY On Wednesday, Sept. 8, a party of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs of Mosier started forth on a journey in a “wagon-a-mobile”. As we ascended the heights between Mosier and Hood River, a fine view of Mosier valley was obtained, and the orchards, fields, and homesteads which came into view, was a scene beautiful to behold as they lay smiling in the early morning sun. Passing over the summit and descending the other side, a panoramic view of Hood River valley lay before us, which was certainly a grand sight. In comparing the two views it brought to mind the fact that what was possible for the one is possible for the other, and that before many years have passed, Mosier valley, with its beautiful location, varied and natural resources, and hustling, up-to-date residents, will be as well developed and afford as beautiful and bountiful homes for the people now living within its bounds, and to those who will come, as her sister valley.

A bit of Mosier trivia though not trivial: Mosier at one time exported more apples than anywhere in the country. Mosier had a depot close to the Fruit Growers Building and tons of fruit of all kinds left the building and got loaded onto trains heading east.

PS If you read the “NOTICE” above, I wonder if any rebellious Mosier women attended that meeting.

I wonder if 100 years from now our citizens will be reading about The Microwave Fire and comparing the landscape then with now.

YOGA WITH JODY

Happy Monday everyone, I trust everyone is getting back to a semblence of normalcy after the excitement of this weekend's and ongoing fires. It is inspirational to see so many stepping out to help one another and also the courageousness of those who are willing to travel so far to "fight" the fires. Thank you to all. This week's classes will be on the deck - and we'll go back to "school" hours... Tuesday and Thursday at 4 pm. We'll also have a 1/2 hour stillness/meditation practice on tuesday at 5:30 pm. Please let me know which classes you'll be joining me for. Future Friday Morning class:For those who can't make 4 pm, and are interested in a friday morning class - i am planning to add this in a few weeks.

peace and joy,Jody

August 6th KGW featured a story by Katherine Cook about the restoration of a hiking trail between Starvation Creek and Viento along the OLD GORGE HIGHWAY> Ribbon Cutting was scheduled to take place August 15th.

The section will be 12 miles long when finished in approximately 2016 which is the centennial anniversary of when the Scenic Highway was completed. Darlene Stiles Grandfather owned the land being restored and she was shown in a KGW feature walking part of the trail and talking about spending summers there as a child.

No interstate or internet existed back then said Stiles of her simpler life.

The building of the trail is a restoration of history and gives people a chance to hike, bike and enjoy the gorge from a different perspective.

I accessed the video of KGW’s story at www.kgw.com/news-local/stories/kgw_080609_news_columbia_gorge_trail.b5c1dbf6.html
