Purpose of Activity: The purpose of these task cards is to get your students excited about
different types of poetry.
Included in Product: Teacher Tips Handout
Poetry Task Cards (Free Verse, Haiku, Tanka, Cinquain, Diamond, Color,
Acrostic, Biography, Limerick, List, Couplet, Create Your Own)
Teacher Tips & Hints: You will need to print the task cards off in color and carefully cut them
out. Laminating the cards may be a good idea as well.
Included on each card are guidelines on how to write the poem and an
example.
There is also a task card that asks students to create their own type of
poem. This will really bring out some creativity!
These cards can be used in several ways:
Writing Station- The task cards can make a great writing station. For
this, it may work best to bind the cards together to make a little
book. A cover page is included.
Group Work- You could also have students work in groups and
write a poem. For this, organize your students into groups (or
partners), pass out a task card, and have them write a poem.
Whole Class- These task cards can also be used for the entire class.
For this, display a task card for your students to see and then write
a poem as a class.

Tanka Poem Guidelines
Older than the Haiku, the Tanka differs
from the Haiku in both its form (31
syllables~ 5-7-5-7-7) and its style of
expression.
1. Think of a scenic spot or gaze out the
classroom window.
2. Capture in words what you see and
feel. Write as many colorful phrases
as you can think of.
3. Check each phrase. Adjust your
phrases until all are either 7 or 5
syllables long.
Fall Leaves changing color
Fall winds starting to whisper
Yellow, orange, and brown
Tumbling down very soft
Saying good-bye to summer

Haiku Poem Guidelines
A Haiku is a three-line poem of Japanese
origin, which usually focuses on nature
and pays careful attention to syllables.
1. Find a nature scene and look deeply
into the picture. Think about all the
interesting ways to describe the scene.
2. Write at least 10-12 colorful phrases that
help capture the mood and the picture.
3. From this list, write down your Haiku with
the first line as 5 syllables, then 7, and
then 5.
Note: Haiku poems rarely rhyme.
