Creative Writing Language Techniques
Simile
Describing something by indirectly comparing it to something else; using the words “like” or “as”
Her head was covered in curls like corkscrews.
Metaphor
Describing one thing by directly comparing it to other. Her head was covered in corkscrew curls.His eyes were deep ocean blue.
Personification
Describing a non-human object by making it seem human.The wind danced in the trees.
Alliteration
Repeating the same consonant (non vowel) sounds at the start of words.The rain poured as it pounded and pummeled on the roof.
Onomatopoeia
When the sound of the word being said matches the sound it is describing.
The pitter-patter of the insects tiny feet could be heard in the night.
Emotive Language
Any words that deliberately connect to people’s feelings or make things seem emotional.He was outraged that his mother had given him brussell sprouts for dinner.
Nouns
Words that name objects, people, places, feelings or ideas.
Albatross, doctor, Harry, Dunedin, survival, hate.
Adverbs & Verbs
Words to describe action and how it is happening.
Ran swiftly.Cried loudly.Wandered aimlessly.
Adjectives
Words to describe nouns.
Rough carpet.Plastic bucket.Purple toe-nails.
