JAYHAWK TEAM PHILOSOPHY

“POP”PRIDE

OPPORTUNITY

PERSPERCTIVE

Page 11: Creating Your Team Philosophy

PRIDE• There are 2 aspects of pride. There is false

pride and true pride. False pride is when a person consistently cheats his true potential.

• True pride is illustrated by the person that ALWAYS gives 100% effort. It is that perseverance within oneself that breeds confidence. Confidence is contagious. Do not cheat yourself, your family, or your team. The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender!

Page 12: Creating Your Team Philosophy

OPPORTUNITY• It is important to realize that when an opportunity

presents itself that you must take action! When you fear or ignore opportunity, the door will close, and you will have denied yourself success.

• If it’s a great block or tackle on the field, studying to ace a test, or tell your parents you love them… Never let the door close!

• Whether you create or you are given an opportunity, you have a chance. With a chance there are possibilities. With possibilities you have hope. With hope, you can dream.

• DON’T EVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS!

Page 13: Creating Your Team Philosophy

PERSPECTIVE• There are many things in life we can

and cannot control. We must accept the things we cannot change…

• We must have the courage to change the things we can…

• It is our wisdom to know the difference that gives a person peace of mind. Even in great attempts… It can be glorious to fail.

Page 14: Creating Your Team Philosophy

GAME PHILOSOPHY• Are you defense or offense minded?

• Will mainly run, pass, or balance your attack.

• What is your base defense and why?

• Will your defense be able to adjust to any offense during a game?

• What are the basic goals for the defense?

• Will special teams play into your strategy?

• Is your philosophy boring, effective, complex, or fun?

Page 15: Creating Your Team Philosophy

JAYHAWK OFFENSE PHILOSOPHY

“SKILL – WILL - & SCORE”• Run the ball to defend the clock.• We will implement the element of surprise

through the air, misdirection and counter plays in an effort to keep the defense guessing.

• Effectively read the defense and expose their weakness. We want to:

ATTACK THEIR WEAK POSITIONS.• We want 3 offensive scores and 300+ yards

per game!

Page 16: Creating Your Team Philosophy

O-LINE“WE WORK THE HARDEST, WE GET NO

GLORY, BUT WE ARE, THE REASON!”Objective:

• We must win the battle at the line of scrimmage.• Controlled aggression is the key to mentally out

witting the defense.• We will have an effective run game via the

wishbone or I formation. • 4 yards + 3 downs = first downs.• If we control the LOS, we can control the clock.

No other unit on the team will put forth more unconditional effort!!!

Page 17: Creating Your Team Philosophy

BACKS & RECEIVERS“SKILL & SCORE!”

OBJECTIVE:• The abilities of our “skill personnel”

will ultimately dictate the playbook.• The goal of the “skill positions” is to

ride the back of the O-Line and run the ball first.

• Skill players must seize every opportunity to advance the ball with maximum effort. Failure to do so is failing the boys up front in the trenches.

SPECIAL TEAMS“Best of the Best”

The team that executes a great play on special teams wins 90% of the time at any level!

Most teams overlook this aspect of the game and miss out on momentum and other opportunities.

Playing on Special Teams should be an honor earned through effort and skill.

Page 23: Creating Your Team Philosophy

JAYHAWK SPECIAL TEAMS PHILOSOPHY

Create opportunities to score. Create opportunities to regain

possession for the offense. Create opportunities to improve field

position. We want 1 long return or score & 1

turnover per game. We mingle our best, most physically &

fundamentally sound athletes to achieve our goals.

Closing Thoughts on PhilosophyThe mark of a coach can last on a child for a

lifetime. We are a rare and fortunate breed. Coaching is a hobby for most in other sports. Football is our passion. While we can always count on the presence of criticism, we have this fraternity that only few people will ever know.

Someday, a young man will look up into the bleachers and say “Thanks Coach” with a wink of his eye. That my friends is the treasure of selfless love.
