Bama Has Been Busy Socializing

The Club Makes International Collaborations Possible

By Dr. Ruth Carmichael and Elizabeth Hieb Alabama Adoption Update

High water during the rainy season in Brazil floods forests, allowing Amazonian manatees to access additional areas – but this also makes the task of tracking their movements and observing their behaviors more difficult. Photo by André Coelho.

Alabama adoptee Bama was sighted in Dog River, Alabama, during May and June. Dog River is a known hotspot for manatees during summer months and has been a regular hangout for Bama. Pictures and videos submitted to Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s Manatee Sighting Network (DISL/MSN) showed Bama milling, feeding, and cavorting with groups of six or more manatees. Groups of up to thirteen manatees have been reported in Dog River this summer, often feeding on abundant submerged aquatic vegetation in the area and exhibiting behavior consistent with mating herds. Based on observations, Bama

may be the focal female of one such mating herd. Several other familiar manatees were also seen in Alabama, including Big Ben and CR054, who are frequently sighted on the northern Gulf of Mexico coast. DISL/MSN is on pace for another record-setting year of manatee sightings in local waters! The DISL/MSN team also hosted Cora Berchem of Save the Manatee Club (SMC) for a visit to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab in June! We were excited to share our ongoing research projects and show her where manatees spend time in local waters. Unlike many traditional

manatee habitats in peninsular Florida, Alabama waters are dark and murky, making it harder for boaters to spot manatees that may be just under the surface. Through our partnership with SMC, DISL/MSN distributes waterway signs and boat decals to local residents and businesses to promote manatee awareness. We are thrilled to continue to work with SMC to increase awareness and outreach in Alabama and nearby waters! To learn more about SMC’s collaboration with DISL’s Manatee Sighting Network, watch the following video bit.ly/SMC_DISL.

his summer we provided financial support to allow Dr.

Dr. Marmontel's many years of experience are invaluable to this relatively new facility, which is preparing to release several manatees in the upcoming months and also continues to seek advice on providing the best care for the young orphan manatees in their care. Season Attendance Finals – Annie Wins!

“Manatee Man” Wayne Hartley and the Club Win Media Award

ometimes known as the “Manatee Whisperer,” the “Manatee Guru,” and the “Manatee

Man,” Wayne Hartley, Save the Manatee Club’s Manatee Specialist, has recorded life histories of the wild manatees at Blue Spring State Park in Volusia County, Florida, for 37 years. This admirable, folksy Florida icon was recently presented with a “Getting Results Award” by WKMG-TV, News 6, in Orlando, which recognizes people in Central Florida who go above and beyond to make a difference in the community. “Congratulations to Wayne Hartley and Save the Manatee Club on winning the News 6 award,” said anchor Matt Austin from the station. First as a Blue Spring State Park Ranger and Park Ranger Specialist with the Florida Park Service, and now as the Club’s Manatee Specialist (since 2010), Wayne’s research data comprises one of the world’s longest running manatee databases. Wayne identifies manatees by their scars from boat hits, entanglement with fishing lines and ropes, or natural causes. Each winter when manatees return

to Blue Spring, Wayne takes daily morning roll call and keeps a record of who shows up in the spring run. He also names each manatee he is able to identify, and 22 of these manatees currently make up the Club’s Blue Spring Adopt-A-Manatee® program. Kudos to Wayne from all of us

at the Club for his amazing body of work for nearly four decades, and a special thanks to a charming man who considers the Blue Spring manatees his buddies. Watch the feature video on the award presentation to Wayne atbit.ly/WayneAward.

By Wayne Hartley, Manatee Specialist Blue Spring Adoption Update

The season began on November 15th and ended on March 24th. During the season 509 different manatees were seen. The park staff counted a high of 458 on January 31st. I consider that 346 stayed the season. In the end, my calf count was 49. We already have four for next season! I recorded 59 manatees

as sharing 66 vessel strikes during the season. Some have been struck more than once. A sharp-eyed reader may spot differences in the numbers from previous updates. The earlier updates were taken from my field notes before they were transferred to the neat, orderly, daily attendance sheets.

Now for the adoptee attendance: Elaine, Squeaky, and Robin had zero appearances. Flash had one on November 23rd, as did Merlin on January 1st. Deep Dent stayed five days. Brutus was in six days, and as one of the visits was before January, he counted as staying the winter. Margarito was in seven days and

he warm months are upon us, and Ariel, Electra, and Lorelei are enjoying the cool waters of the Homo-

sassa Spring. Ariel shows up first to programs, most likely to be the first one to receive a head of crunchy ro-maine lettuce. Lorelei swims around the observatory waiting before feed-ings, often seen doing barrel rolls from inside the underwater observa-tory. At feedings, Electra takes each head of lettuce and swims away from her spring-mates to enjoy a quiet meal by herself. On President’s Day, our park received a rescued manatee from Crystal River. Later named Roos-evelt, this manatee had exhibited signs of cold stress and required

constant care and monitoring from our rangers and veterinarians. After several months of care and supervi-sion, Roosevelt received a clean bill of health! His successful release into Kings Bay was a coordinated effort between the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and our park staff. We hope to see a healthy Roosevelt visiting our springs next winter. One of our park's unique features is the underwater observatory, better known as "The Fish Bowl." Placed in the Homosassa main spring over 50 years ago, the observatory gives visitors an opportunity to view hundreds of fish and our manatees from an underwater level. Just a few steps down below, and you're

immersed in an entirely differ-ent aquatic world. After years of cleaning the glass with abrasive material, the once clear windows became deeply scratched, allowing algae to hide and obstruct views. Through donations and financial assistance from the state, a glass resurfacing project on half of the observatory's windows was com-pleted in late May. Visitors can now view our three ladies with renewed clarity – come by and see them eat after any of our three daily manatee programs!

Editor’s Note: Ariel, Electra, and Lorelei are available for a Save the Manatee Club adoption atbit.ly/HomosassaAdopt.

Run for Manatees at Your Own Pace or Place13 foreign countries. To date the event has raised $175,000 for manatee education and conservation efforts. “I marvel at the support of the community and students who help as volunteers and participants,” said Lesley. “With the community behind us, the race is more enriched for everyone. And the virtual component of the race leaves no interested manatee fans behind who live outside of Michigan.” Patrick Rose, Aquatic Biologist and Executive Director of Save the Manatee Club says, “While the amount of money raised over the years is amazing, the infectious spirit shown by Lesley, Brian, and all the L’Anse Creuse students and volunteers is truly priceless, as it has spread the message of caring concern for the manatees’ wellbeing far and wide.” Whether it’s the thrill of competition at the physical 5K or the comfort of just running the distance whenever and wherever desired with the Virtual Run, all

participants are going the distance in their own caring way for the manatees. Registration is open for next year’s annual Save the Manatee 5K Run, 2 Mile Walk, Mini-Manatee

Mile, and Virtual Run. Race day next year in Michigan is May 19th. For more information or to register, email Lesley Argiri at:[email protected].

Dr. Marmontel's staff in Brazil with a tracking project for Amazonian manatees who have been released in the Amanã Sustainable Development Reserve. The funds we've provided pay for fuel and other field expenses incurred during the tracking operations. Five Amazonian manatees are being tracked as part of this project: Helena, Cassi, Jerusa, Luna, and Japurá. The field observations are allowing researchers to monitor the manatees' travel patterns,

feeding, and other behaviors. Tracking activities are particularly challenging during times of high water, when manatees are more dispersed into flooded forest areas. Navigating through these areas with submerged trees is challenging for researchers. In addition to these activities in South America, we continue to expand our work in Nigeria. This summer, our associate utilized funds from Save the Manatee Club to introduce the outreach

and alternative livelihood program to another village where illegal poaching of West African manatees is occurring. As with other villages, education is the first step, and the community must volunteer to pursue snail farming as an alternative to manatee poaching. This model has proven successful and will continue to be pursued in other locations where poaching is found.

ast coast adoptees Ilya and Chessie remain elusive, but Tampa Bay adoptees Flicker and

Jemp were both sighted! A citizen reported seeing Flicker on April 25th in Port of the Islands, which is over 150 miles south of her winter home in Tampa Bay. Flicker can easily be identified by the scars on her back and tail that look like a flickering candle. This should serve as a reminder to all of us that we need to go slow in manatee

habitat and watch out when boating, fishing, or recreating on water. Wear polarized sunglasses and watch out for snouts breaking the surface of the water. And keep an eye out for manatee “footprints” – circles on the water surface made by the manatee’s tail when it swims. Jemp was sighted in a mating herd on April 19th in Phillippi Creek in Sarasota Bay. Mating herds are very common at this time of the year, and we advise people to stay back and watch from a distance. Manatees are

gentle but very powerful animals, and their strong tails can potentially cause injuries when getting too close. Also, changing the manatees’ behavior is considered harassment, so the best thing to do is to practice passive observation. We don’t have any sighting information on Elsie, Vector, or Ginger at this point. They are most likely traveling along the western coast of Florida during the summer months foraging and looking for mates.

12 guests per guide. ● prevent overcrowding at viewing sites and help create a high-quality visitor experience while avoiding manatee disturbance. ● create stewardship among guests and operators/guides since protection of natural resources is a key component of ecotourism. Tour operators interested in applying to the program must do so in writing and commit to standards that apply to all of their guides leading tours in Citrus County. A full year of demonstrated adherence to the program principles is required before Guardian Guide designation can be granted. The program requires annual review and re-certification. Creation of industry guidelines has been a goal of ours for a number of years. We're grateful for the collaborative process that made this program possible. We believe these guidelines, when followed, will significantly curb manatee disturbance, which is good for manatees, tour companies, and everyone concerned with safeguarding manatees now and in the future. Learn more at bit.ly/Gguides. This summer, SMC staff also developed a short video for paddlecraft users around the state of Florida, to help them maneuver safely and responsibly around manatees. Knowing that a picture is worth a thousand words, the video differentiates between paddlers operating properly and improperly in the vicinity of manatees. The video can be viewed and shared at: bit.ly/PaddleRight. Additionally, our Science and Outreach Coordinator has been giving manatee educational presentations around the globe to students of all ages using a program called "Skype in the Classroom." All of these tools and initiatives help manatees by teaching more people about these creatures, their home, and how citizens anywhere in the world can contribute to their protection.6
