This document outlines the steps for using SciENcv (Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae), via NCBI, to create an NIH or NSF biosketch. SciENcv is the most efficient way to create and maintain biosketches for NIH and NSF grant applications and annual reports. SciENcv Overview SciENcv enables researchers to easily assemble information (including expertise, employment, education & professional accomplishments) to populate several versions of an NIH/NSF, and IES (Institute of Education Sciences) biographical sketch (Biosketch). Profiles from NIH eRA Commons, NSF Fastlane, and ORCID can be linked to NCBI and used to populate the SciENcv profile with information stored in eRA, Fastlane, and/or ORCID accounts. Ensures the Biosketch layout created is in compliance with NIH or NSF rules. SciENcv eliminates the need to repeatedly enter the general Biosketch information when customizing a biosketch for each application. Reduces the administrative burden associated with federal grant submission and reporting requirements. Creating an NIH or NSF Biosketch in SciENcv

Background Beginning June 1, 2020, using SciENcv will be required for many researchers submitting biosketches to NIH and NSF. This document outlines the steps for using SciENcv (Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae), via NCBI, to create an NIH or NSF biosketch. SciENcv is the most efficient way to create and maintain biosketches for NIH and NSF grant applications and annual reports.

SciENcv Overview

SciENcv enables researchers to easily assemble information (including expertise, employment,education & professional accomplishments) to populate several versions of an NIH/NSF, and IES(Institute of Education Sciences) biographical sketch (Biosketch).

Profiles from NIH eRA Commons, NSF Fastlane, and ORCID can be linked to NCBI and used to populatethe SciENcv profile with information stored in eRA, Fastlane, and/or ORCID accounts.

Ensures the Biosketch layout created is in compliance with NIH or NSF rules.

SciENcv eliminates the need to repeatedly enter the general Biosketch information when customizing abiosketch for each application.

Reduces the administrative burden associated with federal grant submission and reportingrequirements.

Access to NCBI

Before you can set up your profile in SciENcv, you need to set up an account in NCBI. You can choose to have a username and password specifically for NCBI or, log in using your eRA Commons username and password.

If you already have an NCBI account go to NCBI, log in and continue to the section on Linking Your Accounts on page 3.

If you need to set up the account in NCBI, click SciENcv and follow the guide below.

Choose a login method. If you sign in with your eRA Commons login you can link the two accounts.

Currently Harvard Medical School is not listed as a 3rd party sign inoption.

Setting up Your NCBI Account

Link your accounts by clicking your user name in the upper right-hand corner, this will bring you to the

NCBI Account Setting page

Click on Change, to link more accounts.

Then click on ORCID and follow the prompts.

ORCID is now linked to your NCBI account.

Click on Account Settings to return to NCBI Account Settings.

Adding Delegates can help you manage your bibliography and/or SciENcv profiles.

On the NCBI Account Settings page, click Add a Delegate. You will enter the deligates email address and the deligate will receive an email notifying them of access and a link to activate the access. If your deligate do not have an NCBI account, they will be invited to register.

Building Your My NCBI Record

If you have already build your NCBI record, continue to section Building your NIH Biosketch through SciENcv, page 6 or Building your Biosketch through SciENcv, page 9.

You can build your record manually or by importing your ORCID account. Once the information from your ORCID account is loaded, it will also reside in the My Bibliography section. If you click on My NCBI in the upper left corner of your screen, you will go to the NCBI record setup page.

If you choose not to use ORCID to build your SciENcv file, click on Manage My Bibliography to add citations from Pubmed, From a File or Manually.

When adding From a file, use .ris, .txt, nbib

When adding through PubMed, search by topic, title or author

If a citation does not appear in PubMed, you can add it Manually. Add as much information as possible.

Building your NIH Biosketch through SciENcv

Go to the main page of MyNCBI

Name your Biosketch

Choose your biosketch format

Choose Source of data. You can start with a Blank Biosketch or use an Existing Biosketch as your source of data. If you choose the latter, be prepared to thoroughly review and edit the text if needed.

If you choose External source e.g. ORCID the information will transfer from ORCID to the biosketch. Please see next page.

EXAMPLE: Import information from ORCID and then click on Edit in each section to add more information.

When all edits are complete, create a PDF for upload to the sponsor portal. See next page. Change your online sharing status.

Add additional degrees/training

You can select citations from My Bibliography or ORCID

Add more information to Positions and Honors if needed

Contributions must be manually entered one at the time.

Add Research Support and/or Scholastic Performance.

Building your NSF Biosketch through SciENcv

Choose data source. You can start with a Blank Biosketch or use an Existing Biosketch as your source of data. All information will transfer to the new Biosketch so be prepared to thoroughly review and edit text if needed.

Go to the main page of My NCBI and click on Manage SciENcv

Click on Edit to add information

Click on Create

When choosing to start with a blank document, you will need to add all information required below.

See NSF Biosketch example on the next page.

Click on Edit, add one or Select Citation to add information to the Blank Biosketch.
