Many different ways to create a web site: • Have someone build it for you – Cost $$$$$
• Develop using HTML code - for the experienced
• Use MS Word – not recommended
• Use a program installed on your PC – click here for best
• Use a “Cloud Computing” Web creation service - various
• For this seminar we will use the “free” Wix.com
Website domain names, URL and IP address
What do these mean?
– Domain Name
• Hides the real internet address behind text name. Analogy- Like International Phone numbers hide real phone network codes/numbers required to make a call
• Uses world wide network of Domain Name Servers(DNS) to control WWW access
• Domain name examples : wix.com, wikipedia.org, nytimes.com, nasa.gov
– IP address (internet protocol address) • is a unique identifying number given to every single computer on the Internet.
Analogy – Like a car licence number uniquely identifies any car
• e.g. IP address 72.246.51.15 = www.nasa.gov
• For most web server, the IP address is invisibly translated by domain servers into a natural English "domain name" for ease of use.
– URL (Uniform Resource Locator) • A URL goes into much more detail than domain name, providing much more
information, including the specific web page address, folder name, machine name, and protocol language. A superset of the IP address.
• e.g. http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/index.html
