What we
have learned
‘Friendly’ is a multi-faceted concept. Four ‘Cornerstones’
•Place
•People
•Resources
•Networks
Beneficiaries – older people, people with dementia –
need to be involved in shaping the future. Listen to
their experience
Initiatives need to come from the people but be
mainstreamed into institutional
practice
Everyday life matters most –
shopping, leisure, friendships – not all about health and
care
Public Health
Messages
Engage people in healthy living early –but it is never too late!
Start in schools, continue in workplaces, offer healthy leisure pursuits
Promote walking and use of public transport
Design places with safe and green routes, subsidise buses and trains
Promote healthy eating in communities
Make sure healthy food is cheap and available, encourage people to eat together
Support people to reduce smoking and alcohol consumption
Education and practical support

What Makes
Friendly
Cities
Inclusion is our goal, people at the heart of decision making
Places that work for everybody
Consistent with economic goals – vibrant cities
Harnessing local resources – spaces, buildings, services.
Integrated communities – don’t separate the young and old, we need each other
