Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo was created to promote production, reflection and knowledge of contemporary art and to generate new proposals of cultural support. This is accomplished through Colección Jumex, the foundation’s art collection; Museo Jumex, a place for the exhibition and activation of contemporary art; Galería Jumex Ecatepec, an experimental exhibition space; and Editorial Jumex, a platform for publication and circulation.

Additionally, the foundation promotes its mission via three complementary areas: Fomento, a program dedicated to financing and supporting production and study of independent proposals; Investigación, a department dedicated to the analysis of the panorama of contemporary culture; and Educación, an area committed to spreading art through pedagogic programs. www.fundacionjumex.org

THE DAY OF THE DEAD

Dia De Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday of celebration on remembrance. It is a time to come to terms with our own mortality and become aware of the cycle of life by honoring the lives of those who are no longer here with us.

The Day of the Dead holiday is celebrated every year by millions of people in countries around the world. In 2008, the tradition was inscribed in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Although the holiday promotes ideas that are universal in nature, it is strongly associated with Latin American culture and, more specifically, Mexican folklore. Its imagery and concepts can be found in literature, films, music, and other cultural demonstrations around the world.

THE ALTAR

Ofrendas (or Altars) are built in preparation for Día de Muertos to celebrate and honor the lives of those who have passed. They are often quite beautiful creations constructed in homes, schools and public spaces during the month of October. Creating an altar is one of the most important traditions leading up to November 2nd, the Day of the Dead.

Families usually dedicate each altar to an individual and place great care in dressing these with symbolic offerings like foods, photos, beverages, flowers, toys and other commemorative objects. These altars represent the memory of the departed. They offer support on their spiritual journey as well as solace, which will hopefully find them wherever they may be.

The altar you visited on your way into the theater was constructed by our production team and is dedicated to the memory of our loved ones who are, physically, no longer here with us.
