Foreword

I find it interesting that God uses “trees” to tell us His Story.Think about it for a minute. From creation to the fall, fromBible prophecies to the promise of a Savior, and from the crossto heaven, God uses trees. He also uses them as a symbol toteach us about growth, strength, intimacy and life and death. Idon’t know about you, but I’ll never be able to look at myChristmas tree the same.

Another truth that is represented in a Christmas tree is that weas believers are part of God’s family tree. Like the evergreenwe are forever rooted and growing in His love.

I was half way through writing this musical when Christmasrolled around and I saw Ann Voscamp’s new Advent book inthe store. I bought it and was fascinated to read about the“Jesse Tree.” I had never heard of such a thing, but it seemedlike the perfect way to help everyone keep the focus on Christat Christmas. (Basically you create ornaments that representevents in the Old Testament that lead up to Christ’s birth.) Itried incorporating some of this in the script, and I hope someof you might create your own Jesse tree in choir.

Another key element in this work is the “Pay it forward”theme. It dawned on me one day that God really was the firstone to “Pay it forward.” And we as His children continue this“Pay it forward” theme when we love on those around us inJesus’ name. And thus, we hang our Jesse Trees upside downto show Christ came to us first while we were yet sinners. (Ro-mans 5:8) So it’s true, our Christmas gift is not found under thetree, but on a tree. And forever and ever we will praise You,Jesus, for Your marvelous gift to us!

Please know I’ll be praying for you. May God bless your min-istries to His children and may He use this as a tool to addmany young lives into His family tree.

SetThe set requirements for this musical are fairly simple. But please make every effort

to create a fun, colorful and “kid friendly” backdrop for your presentation. It is all a re-flection of our great God and His love gift to us (Jesus) at Christmas.

First take into account the platform area you will be using and how it is designed. Ifpossible, place your choir risers to the right and to the left, leaving the center stage clearfor the drama, soloists and any additional choreography or sign language moments youwill be featuring. This is also where the manger scene will take place. A colorful toy storesign should be hung up high and upstage. The tree lot is in front of the toy store. Stringsome Christmas tree lights around your tree lot or the entire stage. Place about a dozentrees of various sizes around the set. Remember too that Jacob and Lucas carry severaltrees onto the set. Next find a spot for the bake sale table; if necessary, it can be off to a side. Place a col-

orful tablecloth with an assortment of goodies on it. Add a bake sale sign with balloonstoo. Think about possibly staging it so that Addison and Gwen carry baskets with goodiesto the center to sing “Christmas Bake Sale Boogie.” Keep in mind that Mr. Carmichael and some of the other cast members will be carry-

ing on gifts that they have purchased during the presentation. Decide where these giftsare going to be placed.

CostumesNote: The musical is set outside in the cold in December, but big coats would be very dis-tracting and unnecessary on the children. The audience will get the picture if your maincast wears colorful scarfs, mittens, and Christmas sweaters. Mr. Carmichael: Professional suit with a Christmas tie. Jacob and Lucas: Plaid button up lumberjack looking shirts with jeans.Karly: Colorful Christmas sweater with Elsa on it. Abigail: Christmas sweater and she carries a clipboard.Gwen and Addison: Red and green Christmas aprons with pictures of cupcakes and hotchocolate on the front. Police Man: Locate a police man costume from a costume store.Mother: Winter coat and hat.Choir: For a unified look, you may have the choir wear t-shirts with the musical logo onthem. An iron-on transfer of the logo is included in the Kids Fun Pak (45757-2929-5).Another option is to have the choir in various Christmas sweaters.

This musical is filled with vibrant songs that deliver the truth of God’s word and a script that follows a group of kids selling trees outside of Mr. Carmichael’s toy store to raise money for children in need. Join the adventure as these compassionate and fun-loving kids demonstrate the powerful love of Christ to the greedy Mr. Carmichael and invite him into the family of God.

by David T. Clydesdale. The musical brings to life what it means to be a part of God’s family tree and the importance of sharing

His love with others. Children of all ages will love learning about how they can be a part of God’s family with the relevant arrangements and engaging narration.
