KEY AWARENESSgameLEARNING OBJECTIVESKey Awareness Cards help your students to apply their knowledge and understanding of scale and arpeggio patterns in a holistic, fun way. For example:

• being able to draw a particular scale degree on the stave

• identifying certain scale degrees within a particular key and using them to improvise a melody

• playing a scale in intervals (e.g. C major in 3rds: C-E, D-F, E-G, F-A, G-B, A-C, B-D, C-E)

• finding melodic/harmonic intervals within a piece of music they’re learning/sight-reading

• understanding technical names of scale degrees

• being able to create triads in root/1st/2nd inversion

VERSATILITY OF THIS GAMEThis game can be used in both face-to-face and online lessons with one student or a group of students.

FOR USE IN YOUR PIANO STUDIO

1. Print out the set of cards in colour

2. Laminate the cards. Students can write/erase their answers on certain cards (e.g. cards with stave) using dry-wipe markers

FOR USE IN ONLINE LESSONS

1. Download the PDF

2. Screenshare and use the cursor arrow to indicate the card to be answered

HOW TO PLAY1. Select Key Awareness Cards in a key that your student(s) has been working on recently. For example, D minor - because your student has been learning that scale, the arpeggio or broken chord, playing repertoire or sightreading in that key.

2. Choose a suitable selection of cards for your student based on musical concepts that that s/he has been learning recently: a particular key, a particular interval within that key. For example: with a Beginner student you might use the pentascale cards in simple keys; with an Elementary (Grade 1) student you might use the cards that ask them to find intervals of 2nds, 3rds or 5ths in scales and pieces; with an Early Intermediate (Grade 3) student you might use the cards that focus on 1st and 2nd inversion shapes in that key.

3. Use the Score Sheet to record the student(s) scores. You might play this game during a series of lessons with a student, recording their score each week. This could also become a studio challenge!
