whaling merchant and silver retailer

William Hadwen. Tucked away behind

Built in 1686 as a wedding gift for Jethro

Co�n and Mary Gardner, the Oldest

House is the last standing structure in

its original location from the island’s

seventeenth-century English settlement.

Located in a quiet residential

neighborhood off upper Main Street,

Greater Light was originally a livestock

barn and later converted into a summer

home and art studio by eclectic Quaker

sisters Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan

in the 1930s. This magical venue is like

no other on the island, with twelve-foot

hand-forged iron gates, stunning floor-to-

ceiling windows, and a lush secret garden.

Greater Light shines for small indoor and

outdoor gatherings, romantic wedding

ceremonies, vintage-style tea parties, and

corporate retreats.
