MARY-WYNNE ASHFORD’S TEDx TALK

On November 16th, 2013 Mary-Wynne (Mon/Thurs Soprano & CCLT grad) spoke at Victoria’s TEDx event. The title of her talk was One More Step which is also the title of one of our core repertoire songs which we sang at choir each night this past week. You can hear her talk and see/hear her lead the audience in the song by clicking here.

SEVENTH WAVE CONCERT “NEVER MADE IT” VIDEO

Check out this YouTube video taken by an audience member of Warren Hooley & Katree with the choir’s backing on Never Made It. Thanks to Liz Ball and Rhianna Barr GHC Monday & Thursday Sopranos for finding it and sending in the link.

TR RITCHIE TRIBUTE

As many of you already know TR Ritchie, composer of the GHC’s core repertoire song “Somewhere To Begin” died recently. At Tuesday choir someone said that National Public Radio (NPR) in the US broadcast a tribute to him recently and I have been trying to find it on-line so that I could include a link to it in the newsletter. So far no success. If the person who mentioned it, or anyone else, can send me a link to it please do.

Opportunities to singTHE SPONTANEOUS VOICE - VANCOUVERPresented by: Laurel Murphy (CCLT9 – 2012)

When you put down the sheet music or disregard the rehearsed song, what is left?

Singers take a leap of faith. Open your ears, heart, mouth, and soul in order to fly free, trusting your powers of intention, invention, and improvisation. Is this something any one can do? Vocalist and teacher Laurel Murphy says, “YES!”

VICTORIA ACOUSTIC MUSIC LOVERS MEETUP

If you love acoustic music you might find this new “Meetup” group to your taste.

Page 4: CREATE & POST PDF VERSION BEFORE SENDING  · Web viewThis past week Monday Alto Sara Jean Lohmann sent in some Seventh Wave concert photos as did Thursday Soprano Judith Rassenti.

The overall goal of this group is to provide support for acoustic musicians living in the Greater Victoria area. This would include regular jam sessions, lessons - both group and individual, motivation for new and returning musicians, singing and songwriting, computerized audio recording, and sound-reinforcement and lighting systems. Its a big project and I would be happy to have help in putting it all together. You don't have to be a musician to join. :o)

IMPROVE YOUR SINGING WITH CHOIR PRODIGY

My thanks to Louise Jarvis CCLT7 – 2010 for bringing this interesting free App to my attention. I have downloaded it to try out but haven’t yet so this recommendation is just that it looks interesting and worth checking out. On its site it claims:

“You sing along with the app, it listens and gives you instant feedback. No other system can actually hear your pitch and help you instantly. And no other system knows if you are singing the right vowel with good tone.”

Check it out for yourself at: http://rockprodigy.com/cp

PAST AND/OR DISTANT VOICESI HEAR GOOD REPORTS OF OUR LAST CONCERT - EVEN WAY DOWN HERE IN MEXICO!

I have just finished reading a mystery called Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny, about a group of monks who sing Gregorian chants. She also used, "and all will be well...." I loved her descriptions of how the voices blended to create one sound...

In a week or so, we will be off to Guanajuato to hear the 'callejoneados' singing medieval Spanish songs, complete with instruments and costumes...

CYCLE OF HOPE FOR ALS 2014

I am honoured to be riding with the Cycle of Hope again in August.  Our aim is to raise $50,000 for ALS - half of it will go to ALS BC for an electric wheelchair - the other half will go to ALS Canada for research.

Our fundraising efforts will include bottle drives during June and July, selling Level Ground Coffee and the awesome Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance for the second year running. This was such an amazing event last year.

Save those bottles!!! I will be asking for coffee orders during choir and can collect bottles on a Monday night.  We start training in March 3 days a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. So I won't be able to time travel.

If you have any bottles or want to order coffee or are interested in attending the Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance please email me at:

THE SECRET LIFE OF POEMS (Mar 29 & 30)at Royal Roads University Presented by Denis Donnelly

Over two days, I will guide you to deepen your own dialogue with the ancient and honoured poetic tradition. We will explore the ways that poetry works both on the page and within us, and how it can enlighten and enliven our own passages. Our focus will be mainly on poems that are inspired by the natural world.

By considering such aspects of poetry as image, sound, form, syntax and allusion, we will seek to broaden into a tradition that, at its heart, carries the wisdom of humanity.

Length: 2 days – March 29 and 30Time: Sat 9:30am – 4:30pm & Sun 9:30am – 3pm Cost: $145 + applicable taxes. Registration is limited so please book early. Best to Register by: Sat, Apr 12, 2014   http://cstudies.royalroads.ca/courses/TAET3346-Y13.htm

Oliver will explore ways of treating every song and performance individually to draw out the meaning and find the opportunities to strut your stuff. Basic ornaments and technique, following the narrative, pitch stability and discovering your voice will all be covered in this workshop.
