When the Civil War ended, former slaves were finally free. In many parts of the country, particularly the South, former slaves were often discriminated against and denied their rights. Even though the 15th amendment gave all men the right to vote, and, some years later, the 19th amendment gave women the right to vote, many African-Americans were still kept from voting. When Mikhail Gorbachev took power in 1985, he tried to make changes to make life in the Soviet Union better, such as giving Soviet citizens freedom of speech. Soon after, many of the Soviet states that were different ethnic groups began to fight for their independence. By 1991, the Soviet Union was beginning to collapse, and it 1992 it became a commonwealth of independent republics. The Cold War was over, and the Soviet Union was no longer a communist country.




What makes you who you are? Many of our characteristics are learned behaviors, but genes control many of our traits, especially our physical appearance. Whether you will be short, average height, or tall depends on the genetic code passed on to you through both of your parents. Likewise, the color of your eyes, skin, and hair are genetic traits that come from your ancestors. Anyone who has commented that you have your father’s nose or your grandmother’s curly hair is noticing this genetic link. Even minor traits, like the length of your eyelashes, or whether or not you can curl your tongue are all determined by the genes passed on to you through your mother and father.




The animal kingdom is made up of many-celled creatures that feed on living or once-living things. The animals within the animal kingdom are divided into two groups, or phylum, vertebrates and invertebrates. Most animals, 97%, are invertebrates. Invertebrates are animals without a backbone. The largest class of invertebrates is insects, but there are other classes of invertebrates, such as arachnids, crustaceans, and mollusks. Most of the largest animals are vertebrates, which are animals that have a backbone. The five classes of vertebrates are mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians.
