CAMERA BASICS CHEAT SHEET
FOCUSINGBasic Technique:
1. Zoom all the way in to subject
2. Focus
3. Pull out to desired frame
Important:
■ Always focus on people’s eyes
■ Autofocus mode is unreliable
■ It’s hard to focus in low light
■ Be careful focusing using small
LCD screens
APERTURE
Basic Technique:
1. Set to manual
2. Expose for subject’s faces
Important:
■ Try to expose so your subject
and background both look good
■ When in doubt, expose for your
subject’s face
■ Use an ND filter for bright
scenes
■ Use the zebra stripe function to
reveal overexposed areas
■ Use the camera’s gain if lighting
is still low with aperture fully
open
■ Overexposure = crappy video
ZEBRA STRIPES
Basic Technique:
1. Turn on and set to 100% IRE
2. Adjust exposure until most
zebra stripes disappear on
your main subject
Important:
■ Don’t close down to eliminate
all zebra stripes
■ Naturally bright items such as
practical lamps, jewelry, etc.,
should have some zebra
stripes in highlights
Basic Technique:
1. Set camera to manual white
balance
2. Hold a white card or sheet of
paper in front of lens in the same
light as your subject
3. Zoom in so white card fills the
screen
4. Operate manual white balance
Remember to:
■ White-balance when light changes
Color Temperatures:
Daylight = blue
Tungsten (interior) light = orange
Fluorescent light = green
Sodium street lights = yellow
White Balancing Color Effects:
Pale blues = warm tones
Oranges = cool tones
Red = green tones
Blue = orange tones
Green = purple tones
SHUTTER SPEED
Basic Technique:
Normal look = 2x frame rate
Normal: 24fps=1/48 , 30fps=1/60
Important:
Try 1 setting down for low light shots
Strobe Look/Freeze Frame = >1/1000
COLOR BARS
Basic Technique:
1. Turn on camera’s color bar
function on menu
2. Record for 1 minute at beginning
of shoot and turn off
Important:
■ If you forget, record bars at end
■ Refer to page 139 of book for
how to adjust on monitor
Basic Filters:
ND filters = reduce bright light
Polarizer = reduce reflections
UV = clear/protect lens
Color graduated = sunrise/sunset
Graduated ND = even sky exposure
Special Effects Filters:
Diffusion = soften details/
blemishes
Warming = warm skin tones
Soft FX = glamour/portrait
Pro-mist = reduce hi-light flare
Black pro-mist = more film-like
Fog = lights glow/flare
Double fog = fog effect
Star filter = star-like light flares
Important:
■ Many filters absorb light. You
may need to adjust exposure
■ Filters come in grades, a higher
grade equals a greater effect
■ Polarizer filters need to be
rotated to reduce reflections
CAMERA ND FILTERS
Basic Technique:
1. In bright sunlight, set ND switch
to ND1 or ND2
2. Readjust exposure
Important:
■ Don’t use ND indoors unless
you’re overexposed at a high
f-stop
■ Most cameras have an ND filter
switch near the lens
ABBREVIATIONSWB = white balance
ND = ND filter
AWB = auto white balance
= manual white balance
MF = manual focus

MODERN DOC STUDY CHEAT SHEET
The following chart is provided as an informal resource to help you discover and study some of the most notable docs of recent years (along with a few personal favorites). The selec-tions, categories, conclusions, and highlighted features are all subjective, which means reasonable filmmakers, professors, and fans may reasonably disagree with some of the classifications of the documentaries on it. Nevertheless, I hope you will find it a unique and helpful tool to help you research and prepare to shoot your own project.
