What We Do
We develop user and system
requirements, design, assess and
optimise solutions, analyse and assure
safety and performance, build
operational safety cases and plan for
through-life management
Define
our systems approach
ensures we define the
full context of our
Clients’ end goal and
hence develop effective
solutions
Understand
a comprehensive
capability to assess and
improve the fundamental
behaviour of engineering
equipment and systems
Integrate
the systems engineering
expertise to deliver
integrated solutions
across the full project
lifecycle
Assure
the stature to support
critical decisions on
safety, the environment
and business risk
“The system engineering approach that
we employ brings clarity to the
complexity faced by our clients. We
focus our capability across
engineering and science disciplines to
provide insight that gives our
customers a competitive edge”

Case Study: Subsea Sled Cooldown
(Isabela)
The Problem
Concern that fluid temperature in the flowline would fall
below hydrate formation temperature during shut-in.
Our Approach
Conjugate fluid-structural CFD model used to calculate cool
down time.
Greater fidelity (confidence) than solid FEA models.
Results
Initial build
40% of required cooldown time, majority of heat loss
through small number of paths.
Design Modifications
Resin collar inserted between pipework and collar.
Modest increase in insulation thickness.
Insulation extended along bulkhead support.
Final Assessment
Cooldown time requirement achieved (x2.5
improvement).

Case Study: Tidal turbine
The Problem
Concern that the high energy offshore environment,
imposing cyclic loading, would accelerate a fatigue mode of
failure.
Our Approach
Initial fatigue screening to identify critical areas.
Presentation of a range of design options to reduce fatigue.
Hand calculations, simple finite element models through to
complex FE models representative of the final design.
Design modifications.
Assessment to code (DNVGL-RP-0005).
Operational support (lifting and installation).
Results
Fatigue critical areas identified.
Localised design changes implemented to increase the
fatigue life.
DNV prototype Class approval achieved.
Conclusions and design features are being implemented on
the standard product design.
